I sorry my Prologue was short but my Prologues are always made short just to give a bit of insight into the story. I always try to make my chapters at least 1,000 words. Anyways here is Chapter 1. Hope you enjoy please R&R
Johnny awoke to the voice of his partner.
"Hey Junior, Lunchtime."
Yawning Johnny attempted to rub the sleep from his eyes.
"Alright, I'm coming."
Lunch was quieter than usual. Chet harassed Johnny throughout the meal and much to his dismay and everyone's surprise, Johnny did not react. After a few moments of shock Roy dismissed it as Johnny's mind being pre-occupied.
After all a good friend of his had passed away the week before and the funeral was creeping closer. Roy dismissed that excuse when "The Phantom" set a water trap off on him and Johnny didn't so much as squeak in response. Something was troubling Johnny. Roy followed his dripping partner into the locker room.
"Is everything ok Johnny?"
Johnny stared into his locker, fidgeting with the buttons on his shirt. He knew if he looked at Roy that he would see right through Johnny's facade.
"It's nothing Pally. Just been awkward waiting for Kolton's funeral and to top it off no power in my apartment.
Somethings wrong with the electrical."
"Didn't you call Mrs.Phillips to have it fixed?"
Johnny shook his head.
"She's on vacation for another two weeks still."
"So, let me guess. You spent the last three days in a freezing apartment, eating cold cuts right?"
"Don't forget the ice cold showers in 30 degree weather pal. Boy were those enjoyable." Johnny replied sarcastically.
"Now if you don't mind Roy. I'm going to try to catch up on some more sleep before Chet decides to soak my last
dry uniform." Johnny said as he turned to leave.
Roy could tell Johnny was hiding something. He decided though that now wasn't a time to press the matter. Maybe after Johnny had gotten some rest he would be ready to talk to Roy.
The rest of the day was pretty uneventful. The engine was called to a small dumpster fire. The squad responded to a couple of minor calls and performed some routine inspections on some local buildings. Cap was now making his famous clam chowder. Mike, Marco and Chet were deeply involved in a poker game and Roy was relaxing on the sofa. Meanwhile Johnny was tossing and turning on his bunk, plagued by the same nightmare he had been having every night for the last week.
Johnny stood outside the hospitals morgue.
He wished he didn't have to be the one doing this, hell he didn't want anyone to have to be the one doing this. The only reason he had agreed to do this was because he knew Kolton's sister Heather was already majorly stressed and wouldn't have been able to handle it.
He took a deep breath and walked in.
The morgue had always given him an eery feeling and now was no different. Under normal circumstances this would not have been necessary, but someone had been running around impersonating police officers and this was just part of protocol due to it. This was one time he wished protocol could be thrown out the window.
He nodded to the coroner, signaling that he was as ready as ever to do this. When the sheet was pulled back Johnny saw Kolton's face, or what was left of it.
That tear shaped birthmark still visible on his right temple that normally would have been hidden by his dirty blonde hair.
His body lying on the cold metal slab.
Johnny felt sick to his stomach and was forced to run from the morgue towards the restroom to keep from spewing his lunch all over the floor. Johnny had seen worse than this before and although he had found it slightly troubling at times it had never had this effect on him.
Kolton had been one of his best friends.
A kid brother of sorts to Johnny.
Now he was just a faceless body lying in the morgue. He closed his eyes leaning over the toilet, attempting to steady his shaking body. He straightened up and went back out to the waiting room where Heather was nervously awaiting his return. The minute she saw his expression she broke down. There was no doubting it now. The body in the morgue was her older brother. Johnny gently held Heathers sobbing form. Doing his best to comfort her, knowing that nothing could make the loss of her older brother any easier.
After standing with Heather for approximately twenty minutes Johnny walked out to his Landrover. He was alone now and Kolton's death really started to sink in.
"Damnit! Why Kolton?! Why did it have to be you?!" Johnny rested his head on the steering wheel, holding back his tears. He couldn't cry, not now. He had to much to do to cry.
Roy was just passing the bunkroom when he heard Johnny's voice cry out.
"Damnit!"
Roy rushed into the bunkroom afraid Johnny had injured himself only to find his partner wrapped up in his blanket, trapped in the claws of a nightmare.
Roy walked over to Johnny's bunk.
"Junior?"
Johnny didn't seem to hear him and continued to wrestle in his blanket. Roy gently touched his shoulder.
"Junior. Wake Up."
Johnny jumped as if he had been struck and hit the floor. He looked up at Roy.
"Hey Pally. Dinner already?" Johnny asked trying to avoid the conversation he knew was about to take place. He didn't want to talk about Kolton.
"Alright Junior. I know your going to try denying it, but somethings bothering you. Care to talk about it?"
Johnny sighed and sat himself on the edge of his bunk.
"I guess telling you no probably won't do me any good huh?"
The unamused look on Roy's face made Johnny feel like one of Roy's kids.
"Didn't think so. As you know my kid brother Kolton was killed last week." Roy nodded and Johnny continued.
"Well there has been a Police impersonator running around and someone had to identify his body. Heather was already having a hard time with everything so I agreed to be the one to do it. When the coroner pulled back the sheet I almost died. It was Kolton alright, but" he paused.
"His face was gone Roy. The bastard blew his damn face off. I ran out of there faster than I could think and upchucked my lunch in the men's room. When I went back out Heather could tell by the look on my face that her older brother was the faceless body lying in the morgue. I couldn't say anything to her. I mean what are you supposed to say when someone blew her older brothers brains out in the middle of the highway. I couldn't tell her it would be ok Roy, because what if it isn't ever ok again."
"I don't know Junior. All you can do is be there for her and let her know that you still care. No matter what partner, know that me and Jo are here if you need us.
Roy said patting Johnny on the back.
"Thanks Pally." Johnny said forcing a small smile.
"No problem Junior. Come on Cap's clam chowder should be done soon lets go get some before Chet eats it all."
