The girl had no idea how long she had been lying atop that piece of wood, with night and day blending together with no break in the clouds to show which was which. She had no memories of life before the raft, her mind a disturbingly blank slate that left her wondering how she even knew what "day" and "night" were since she knew the words but could not recall what a sun or moon was supposed to look like. For all she knew, she had been floating on this raft since the moment she was born, her limbs splayed to keep the too-small piece of wood from dumping her into the water.
She wasn't even fully conscious anymore. Seeing nothing but the same waves and fog every single second of her known life had lulled her brain into a near catatonic state. An outsider could have easily mistaken for sleep, but there was still a small part of her that functioned, determined not to roll over and die even if she couldn't remember why she needed to live.
That little bit of functionality was why when something long and thin landed draped over the girl's back, she had the presence of mind to pick it up, even if her brain didn't process what it was that she was holding. It jerked gently in her hand, causing her mind to spike just a little bit more into focus. Her grip tightened on the object, and she watched with interest as the raft began to move in a direction and speed she had never seen it do before.
Even here, where there was no identifiable light source, it still became noticeably darker after the raft had been dragged a certain distance. Instinctively, the girl looked up to see what had caused this, ignoring the strain on her stiff neck and spine. What met her eyes was an enormous… something. Her mind didn't even care what it was, because it was so mind-bogglingly big, and so different from the monotonous waves and fog that she was used to, it was like her brain had jumped straight into the deep end of an icy pool.
The strain was simply too much, and she passed out again.
When the girl awoke, she was no longer on the raft. This alone nearly made her pass out again, but she forced herself to stay awake this time. Seeing something new had jogged her brain, making it work instead of keeping it in a near catatonic state. Now her instincts made her look around, see where she was.
She appeared to be in a huge box made of wood, with huge holes cut into the side to allow a person to see out of it. A room with windows, her mind supplied the words for her. What I had seen from the raft was a ship. For a few minutes she just sat there, relearning how to think and what things were called. Those are doors. Those are curtains. I'm lying on a pile of old canvas sails. That's a piano. Those are skulls.
Wait, what? Skulls? The girl couldn't help but do a double take. There were indeed human remains lying around the room. This puzzled her more than frightened her. After all, all dead people could do was lye around, right? It wasn't as if they could attack her. Although, what put those remains there might be cause for worry. Still, as far as she was concerned, it didn't matter if there were flesh-eating monsters on this ship, because she was still better off than she had been on the raft. At least she got to see something besides waves and fog before she died.
Just when the girl was about to get up and see if there actually was a flesh-eating monster on the ship, the door closest to her bed opened. The low creaking of the rusty hinges made a shiver run down the girl's spine, and she stiffened, wishing that she wasn't lying with her back to the door. Instinctively, she searched for something, anything that could be used for a weapon, even as she heard the steady thump-thump-thump of footsteps walking in her direction.
The footsteps stopped behind her just as the girl's fingers closed around the handle of a small but sharp knife that had been wedged in between some floorboards. A distant part of her brain wondered why it hadn't been pulled up to keep it away from her (as all of the other weapons seemed to have been moved out of her reach), but the majority of her mind was focused on surviving. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up as she felt the other person (or possible monster) lean over her.
"Konnichiwa?" The person said softly. "Anata wa me o samashite imasu ka?"
Whatever it was had a lovely voice, but the words it spoke sounded like gibberish. The girl just wasn't able to stand not knowing any longer, and cautiously rolled over to see what was standing over her. Her eyes widened nearly to the point of popping out of her head.
"Anata ga me o samashite iru!" The skeleton standing over declared loudly.
Instinct took over completely, causing the girl to stab the knife in between the creature's ribs before leaping to her feet and tearing out of the room via the second door. She didn't look over her shoulder to see if the skeleton was chasing her, she just ran until her legs gave out, and then hid herself away in the nearest cubby-hole, shivering in terror and listening for the thump-thump-thump of approaching skeletal footsteps.
A/N I'm sorry for any faults with the Japanese. I was using Google Translate.
