Chapter 2- Missing you

Alice leaned heavily on the kitchen counter after only a few swipes with the cleaning rag in her hand. She always knew she'd miss Wonderland, but never suspected it would be this much, and after sleeping on it, the cat incident had left her shaken. First day out and she was already falling prey to memories, how was she going to manage this? 'Am I loosing it… again?' she began to panic. 'Could it be that I'll be dragged back to Rutledge?'

A sound came from her right and Alice found herself slashing with an imaginary knife at the offender, but there was no peril, it was just a harmless vase that had fallen off the counter after she had distractedly dusted.

The woman shook her head in despair as she realized exactly what she had been doing; she had tried to slash at a card guard with the vorpal blade. Did she need any more confirmation?

Alice all but ran back to her room, upset, saddened and very much scared. She might have confronted a centipede over four times her own size, man-eating mushrooms, rogue chess pieces, card guards that regarded everything as victims and other such menaces and vermin, but she had had nothing to lose back then.

She sat on her large bed, trembling like a leaf on the harsh winter, her cat nowhere to be seen. 'Am I already in the descent into darkness?' She refused to be taken once more to Rutledge, not when she was at last free!

Little did Alice know, she wasn't the only one feeling blue as a lonely crystalline tear slid down her face and splashed on the uncaring floor.

He walked through lush greenery, a blue sky and colorful birds could be seen above as a fresh breeze ruffled his short fur, but all this charm seemed lost on Cheshire as not even the sound of his own footsteps could distract him from the despairing thoughts running endlessly through his mind; although perhaps the fact that his amazingly large paws actually made absolutely no sound could be helping.

His fierce eyes stared fixedly ahead as the trademark smile was nowhere to be seen and, noticing this, everyone scattered away from the feline's path. They knew better than to get on his bad side when he was like this. He might prefer to disappear when confronted since he was no fighter, but the cat was a force to reckon with. Just because Cheshire was a friend didn't make him any less dangerous, as his altered shape and tattooed skin showed, and the other inhabitants of the realm knew it.

Reaching the lake of tears, Cheshire gave an agile jump and landed on a high branch of the lush tree that now grew directly in front of Alice's smiling statue. The sound of the flowing water calmed his abused nerves, and his tail tip's slowed twitching clearly showed. Then, a very rare thing happened, Cheshire gave a soft smile, not the usual grin, but an actual sincere smile. For a few precious moments, his blue mood lifted and for a time, he just admired her. The cat's eyes roamed her statue, with the ample dress, fine boned hands and sharp features; his mind's eye completed the image from sheer memory; he could see her reddish hair flowing in the warm breeze, the straight stands silken to the touch, her cherry lips forming a feminine smile, and her eyes. 'Oh, those eyes!' Emeralds that sparkled as they caught every golden ray of the sun and perfectly reflected her every emotion.

Cheshire had seen them wallow in despair, release a torrent in pure, heart-wrenching grief, flash dangerously with her fury and his personal favorite, the expression her face seemed to be showing now, the unearthly glow of serene happiness on those large green orbs.

After a time meditating in such a peaceful place, Cheshire gave a deep sigh, once more schooled his features into the usual menacing smirk and shook his head to be rid of the last shadows of remembrance in his eyes even when he knew very well that he couldn't shake them from his heart. The feline leapt back to solid ground and began walking to wherever the wind took him… it was that very same wind that took his last thought with a lost glance to the statue.

'My creator, my Alice; I can't and won't drag you back here, but… I miss you so….
