Chapter 2: Meeting Dad
"May, can I ask you something?" Steven's voice interrupt her thoughts.
She turns to him. "Go ahead. You can always ask me anything."
"Who are you?"
Her eyes widen in confusion. "What do you mean by that?"
"I mean... Where do you come from? Who are your parents?"
She grins. "I'm from Littleroot Town. My dad's Norman, and my mom... Doesn't like her name, so she doesn't speak it. She used to be a Pokémon Breeder though."
"...Norman? That's the name of one of the Gym Leaders I put into place when I first became Champion."
She just laughs, and he can't help but wonder why.
"This isn't funny, May," Steven hisses at her as they stand outside of the Petalburg City Gym. Naturally, she's laughing so hard she can barely breathe, but she finds a way to speak anyhow.
"It's hilarious! After all the time we've... spent together... You didn't see the resemblance?"
He grumbles at her, shuffling his feet nervously. "I thought you may have taken more after your mother!"
That just makes her laugh even more. "When you see him again, you'll see what I mean."
As per tradition, Steven has to battle his way into the room where he can meet Norman. Again. May's father, he thinks. He isn't just Norman of Petalburg. He is May's father.
The door opens, and Norman is facing the window. "It's a beautiful view, isn't it, Trainer?" he asks in a relaxed voice.
"That it is, sir. I've come to challenge you."
Recognizing the voice, the Gym leader sharply turns around. "Steven!?"
"Yes sir. I... Don't want your badge, though. I, er..."
An eyebrow is quirked. "Spit it out, Champion."
The queen of inopportune timing, May bounds into the room. "Daddy! This is the boy I've been writing home about!"
Steven falls over in shock. Norman yells. "Steven!? Steven!? He's the one?"
May blushes profusely. "Well I hadn't told him yet, I wanted you to meet him first..."
"My child... What am I going to do with you?" shaking his head, he gives her a hug and whispers something in her ear.
"Daddy!"
Norman laughs at the (former) Champion's bewildered look. "You can tell him after we battle. But you know the rules; you have to leave. I don't do a spectator badge match."
Just before leaving, May turns around to look at Steven. "Good luck, Steven. I... I'll see you after the battle." She winks, and like a breeze, she disappears.
