Thank you all for reading and for your kind review Braxtonboyzz123! This is my first time writing anything like this, so I am a touch nervous yet super pumped! I want this story to be something sweet, charming, and cozy-a good snuggle on a cold winter's day.
Enjoy!
Clueless
Stomach full, Edward breathed a sigh and dropped his head back against the couch. His eyes closed. The now empty mug slipped from his fingers.
His muscles felt uncomfortably tight and there was a terrible ache in his knees, but he felt better. The warmth enveloping him made the howling of the blizzard outside seem small and faraway. Inside the cabin, the only sound was the pop and crackle of burning logs.
If he sat here long enough, he would probably fall asleep again.
A deep breath, another sigh, and Edward opened his eyes. Specks of amber glinted in their dark hue.
"I'm guessing Carlisle sent you."
Jasper said nothing. Edward rolled his head to the side so that he could see the older teen. The blond occupied a chair beside the fire, his own eyes gazing off at nothing.
"I'm not going back, Jasper."
An exceptionally strong gust struck the cabin. The windows shuddered.
"Do you know what would've happened if you had froze out there?" Jasper spoke in a distant voice.
The question gave Edward pause.
"Every day you went without blood would deepen your body's paralysis. Your mind would have eventually grown unbalanced, sometimes putting you into a dreamless sleep for days at a time, or else filling your every waking moment with the crazed agony of your thirst." slowly, Jasper turned his head to regard the bronze haired boy. "Not a very pleasant experience."
Edward swallowed. His face suddenly felt warmer. "I...I didn't know that."
"Of course you wouldn't." Jasper smiled kindly. "And no, neither Carlisle, Esme, or Alice sent me. I'm here on my own accord."
The surprise showed clear on Edward's raised eyebrows. Amusement flickered in Jasper's golden eyes.
"I've been tracking you for a week. When I found out a storm was going to hit this area, I renting this cabin so you'd have some shelter. I also brought along some of your clothes, your phone, and your laptop." a crooked smirk revealed Jasper's sharp canine. "When you leave, you leave in a hurry."
And it just kept getting warmer and warmer. Edward had felt empowered when he strode out that door. Now here Jasper was making his big moment sound like a foolish impulse. So maybe he had left in a temper and without the vaguest notion of where he was going. But damn it all, he wanted his departure to look epic, not juvenile.
He wasn't a kid and this wasn't some angry whim.
"Anyway," the older vampire continued, "We have enough blood to last us a few days, at least until the storm passes. As for now, I assume you'll be wanting to get dressed sometime this morning." he put his hands on his knees and pushed himself to his feet. "I'll get your clothes and help you to the shower."
"Wait." the call slipped from Edward's lips without him fully meaning it to.
Jasper halted in his step.
His features had lost their expression, a look that had always made him appear rather intimating to Edward. It was worse when Jasper's tall frame was standing over him like this. His long hair shadowed his face, but the light of the fire still caught in his eyes. Lean as he was, his figure held an air of strength. Danger.
Edward hesitated. "Why are you doing all this?"
Jasper stared down at him. How could those eyes be so warm one minute and so unnerving the next? "Can you not read my mind?"
Yes, the telepath could, but he didn't like to. He constantly got the feeling that Jasper was able to sense any mental invasion and that crept the mess out of Edward.
Really, there were a few too many strange things about Jasper. The guy was a total enigma.
"You're my friend, Edward." the answer came at last. "My best friend."
And without another word, Jasper walked away.
