… Pallet Town …
…Professor Oak Laboratory…
"Hey Professor," Ash Ketchum called as he entered the Laboratory. "Anyone home?!"
"It's been a while Ashy-boy," came a familiar voice from the back of the Lab.
"Gary!" Ash called in surprise as looked to where the voice came from.
"It's good to see you again Ashy-boy," Gary said with a smile as he approached his former rival.
"Likewise," Ash replied. "Hey! Stop calling me Ashy-boy."
"Old habits," Gary said with a laugh. "How have you been?"
"Can't complain," Ash replied. "Just got home a week or two ago from my training."
"I heard from Grandpa that you were training in quite a few unusual places," Gary said knowingly. "He says you helped get a lot of data on some rare Pokémon."
"That was meant to be private information," Ash said with a huff.
"Well I helped Grandpa update that nice new model of Pokedex you have there so he felt I deserved to know what you were up to," Gary said with a smirk.
"Oh Cool," Ash replied in surprise. "Well I guess I should say thanks. The new features really came in handy."
"Yeah a lot of Trainers would kill to have portable access to the where they store their Pokemon," Gary said with a laugh. "You and I are the first two trainers to have this model."
"Yeah I guess they would," Ash agreed. "Wait did you say Trainer?"
"I sure did Ash-boy," Gary confirmed with a smile. "I've came out of retirement for the tournament of the century. I'm guessing you received your invitation today."
"Oh wow," Ash cried happily. "That means we get to have a full battle again."
"Easy there," Gary said with a laugh. "We need to actually defeat some of the toughest trainers before that likely to happen. "
"Hmmmm that true," Ash said frowning. "Well how about a quick one on one battle now to test each other out."
"Sure thing," Gary replied chuckling. "We can battle out back. Grandpa had a Grass battlefield installed recently.
"Cool!" Ash replied excitedly.
… … Tournament Island … …
… … Pokemon League Conference Room … …
"This meeting is must be kept off the record," Charles Goodshaw began speaking quietly.
"Indeed," Lance the champion of Kanto and Johto agreed. "It is completely against league regulations for us to be meeting and conspiring like we are."
"It may be against regulations," Cynthia the champion of Sinnoh agreed. "But this is for the good of the world."
"It does make me uncomfortable meeting like this," Steven Stone the champion of Hoenn agreed. "But if this threat is as great as you say it is, then it is our moral duty to do something."
"The threat is beyond which we can imagine for all we know," Cynthia said firmly. "Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket has been forced into a corner by the nearing unionisation of the Pokemon Leagues and G-Men of our 4 respective regions."
"When all 4 regions unite and the respective G-Men of each become one force, then Giovanni can finally be arrested for his crimes against Pokemon," Lance continued. "He has been infinitely careful to remain hidden in his role as leader of Team Rocket in Kanto and Johto, but he has been less careful in Sinnoh."
"I have witnessed him performing criminal acts which would result in a life sentence," Cynthia said bitterly. "But I have no jurisdiction in Kanto and can't arrest him here."
"He plays a smart game," Goodshaw said darkly. "I've always known he was bad news, but his position as such a powerful Gym Leader has restricted me from removing him from his position in the League. Not to mention, he has connections on the board of the Pokemon League who vote to keep him in place."
"That's why he has only one option," Lance said. "He must win the Grand Champions League if he hopes to be put above the jurisdiction of the G-Men."
"So we must make sure we stop him," Steven said slowly. "Between the 3 of us we should have a better than good chance."
"It may not be that simple," Cynthia contradicted. "He has several times now attempted to capture legendary Pokémon. We cannot say for certain whether or not he has always failed. There have been rumours of his involvement with a Pokémon of immense power."
"I have heard more than rumours," Lance said bitterly. "I have spoken with several trainers who battled Giovanni many years ago. They all confirmed that he crushed all of their Pokémon with ease."
"If he is a powerful trainer then that may not be so suspicious," Steven said fairly.
"Gary Oak is one of those trainers," Lance replied. "Before his retirement from battling he challenged the Viridian City gym and was crushed by Giovanni. He is honest and powerful and being the Grandson of professor Oak, he has seen many Pokémon. Yet he did not recognise this Pokémon nor has he seen one like it since."
"That is troubling," Steven agreed. "I have also met young Mr Oak and seen his skill first hand. I trust his judgement and honesty."
"If Giovanni had such a Pokémon in his possession, then we alone may not be able to stop him," Cynthia said sadly. "We may need to warn the competitors of the tournament of the threat he poses."
"I believe there are some trainers who can be trusted with the information," Lance continued. "I can think of a few who would be extremely valuable."
"I can think of two who would be ideal candidates," Cynthia said. "However one of them is cold and harsh and may be unsympathetic to such a threat."
"What about the other trainer," Goodshaw asked. "Would he help if we told him of the situation?"
"I have no doubt," Cynthia replied with a laugh. "I don't doubt you have all met him before. Ash Ketchum."
"Well," Lance said with a smirk. "It seems you and I were thinking of the same someone. Ash has been of help to me before in stopping Team Rocket, Team Magma and Team Aqua. I have no doubt he would be of great use."
"What about his companions?" Steven asked. "If I recall, Mr Ketchum had several friends with him."
"Indeed," Goodshaw confirmed. "Several of his friends are accomplished Pokémon trainers and coordinators. I have kept an eye on the boy over the years and powerful trainers seem to gravitate to him. They could be of use."
"They could be," Cynthia agreed. "However we must be wary of how many people are included in this. I think Ash, Mr Oak and perhaps the eldest of Ash's friends should be included in this. I believe Mr Harrison and Miss Waterflower are both accomplished as trainers and have spent time as Gym Leaders."
"I concur," Lance agreed. "Some of his friends are not much younger than him, but we cannot put them in danger. Ash has proven himself many times, and Brock and Misty have my faith as well."
"It is agreed then," Steven said.
… … Pallet Town … …
Present Date …
"You ready for this Ashy-Boy?" Gary called across the battlefield.
"You bet," Ash replied confidently.
"Okay then, Go Aggron," Gary called.
"Aggron!" the steel type called announcing its presence.
"Hmmm," Ash mused to himself. "Ok, I choose you Gabite."
The Dual Dragon and Ground type Pokémon announced itself on the battlefield with a mighty roar, which shook the very ground with its force.
"Wow," Gary exclaimed in surprise. "I never expected your little Gible to pack this kind of power whilst still in the Gabite stage Ash."
"Well I can't take the credit for this one," Ash laughed. "I have Charizard and Cynthia's Garchomp to thank for that. Gabite's goal is to become as powerful as possible in his Gabite stage so that when he does eventually evolve he will be even more powerful."
"I admire the fighting spirit Gabite," Gary said addressing Gabite. "I hope you find Aggron a suitable opponent."
"Gabite," Gabite called in excitement. 'Let's do this!'
"Since you challenged me you can have the first move," Gary said graciously.
"Thanks," Ash replied with a smile. "Alright Gabite lets begin with Sunny Day."
Gabite raised its claws in the air as the sun began to shine more brightly causing the temperature to increase rapidly. Aggron began to look slightly more uncomfortable with the heat, roaring with displeasure.
"Well I've got to say Ashy-boy I never expected you to start strategically," Gary said with a laugh. "It was never your strong suit."
"Things change," Ash said with a smirk.
"They sure do," Gary replied. "Okay Aggron lets begin with Hone Claws."
Aggron's claws began to glow as it slashed its claws together in anticipation raising its attack power and accuracy.
"Okay Gabite lets move in with a Rock smash attack," Ash called.
"Counter with Metal Claw," Gary called in response.
Gabite and Aggron charged towards one another before raising their claws and unleashing their attacks. The two Pokémon began trading blows, both deflecting the others attack before breaking away from each other.
"Aggron don't give it time to recover," Gary called. "Use Ice Beam.
"Gabite dodge it and use Dragon Claw," Ash called.
Aggron fired off its Ice Beam as Gabite began charging towards it before leaping in the air dodging the attack completely leaving Aggron unprotected as Gabite closed in from above its claws glowing with power.
"Aggron re-direct your Ice Beam back at Gabite," Gary called quickly.
"Gabite spin in the air with your claws extended," Ash cried.
Aggron redirected its Ice Beam attack towards Gabite who in return did as its master called and began to spin in the air until its Dragon Claw began to cut through Aggron's Ice Beam due to the heat generated.
"Aggron stop using Ice Beam and hit him with your own Dragon Claw," Gary called out quickly.
"Full Power Gabite," Ash called.
Aggron ceased its Ice Beam attack and began readying its own Dragon Claw attack when it was clobbered aside by Gabite, who's momentum sent Aggron flying back crying out in pain.
"Aggron!" Gary cried out in worry. "Are you okay?"
"Agg, Aggron," Aggron called out. 'I'm not done!'
"Hang in there buddy," Gary called. "Let's get in close and use Dragon Claw."
"Okay Gabite lets do the same," Ash called calmly.
The two Pokémon charged in at each other before trading blows once again, neither giving way.
"Okay Aggron you got this," Gary called. "Keep up those Dragon Claws."
"Gabite when you see an opening let it rip," Ash called.
Aggron picked up the pace slashing down faster and faster on Gabite who began to move back slowly as it struggled to keep up with Aggron's attacks.
'What's Ash up to?' Gary mused. 'Gabite is clearly struggling to keep up with Aggron's attacks and sooner or later he's going to get hit by a super effective move.'
"Nice work Gabite," Ash called confidently. "Time to heat things up."
"What the …" Gary began before realisation dawned on him. "Oh No! Aggron watch out, he's going to use flamethrower."
"Agggggrrooooon," Aggron called. 'Smmmaaaaaash'
"Close Gary but no dice," Ash said with a laugh. "Gabite grab Aggron and let it rip."
As Aggron rained down yet another powerful Dragon Claw attack Gabite moved in close and caught the steel type Pokémon's extended arms in its claws with a grin.
"Aggron break free," Gary called out frantically.
Aggron struggled to free its arms but Gabite held on tight as Flames began to grow in the Dragons mouth.
"Gabite, do it now," Ash called. "Use Fire Blast."
Gabite obliged and released a powerful blast of fire, powered up by the Sunny Day still in effect from earlier, which blasted Aggron of its feet sending it flying across the battlefield before collapsing at the feet of its trainer, its eyes unfocused.
"Aggron is unable to battle," called previously unnoticed Professor Oak. "Ash wins."
"Aggron!" Gary called as he rushed to the feet of his Pokémon. "Are you okay?"
"Agg-ron," Aggron groaned as it regained consciousness. 'What Happened?'
"Great work Gabite," Ash praised his Pokémon. "Return."
Ash held up a Pokeball and Gabite returned inside as Professor Oak approached.
"That was an impressive battle," Professor Oak said to Ash. "I haven't seen you control a battle so well before."
"Thanks Professor," Ash replied rubbing the back of his head modestly. "I didn't even notice you were watching."
"Well I haven't seen you battle in so long," Oak explained. "I just couldn't miss the opportunity to see how much stronger you have become. I'm very much impressed by your Gabite. It takes a lot of skill to raise a Gible through its evolution stages, and by the looks of things Gabite is about ready to evolve any time now."
"Well you see Professor," Ash began. "Gabite has almost evolved quite a few times now, but he keeps insisting that it's not time yet and keeps resisting."
"Well I'll be," Prof Oak exclaimed. "You do certainly know how to pick your Pokémon Ash. I've never seen one Trainer with so many Pokémon who put off their evolution."
"Well I want my Pokémon to be the best they can be in whatever way they feel is best," Ash explained.
"Very admirable Ash," Prof Oak replied. "Your bond with your Pokémon is quite astounding. I always new you had potential as a trainer but you have certainly exceeded my expectations not only in skill but in kindness."
"Thanks Professor," Ash said rubbing his head again awkwardly.
Professor Oak smiled at Ash before turning to face Gary who had approached after returning his Aggron to its pokeball.
"That was an excellent battle Gary," Prof Oak said to his Grandson. "That battle could have went either way given how equal in strength your Pokémon were."
"Thanks Grandpa," Gary replied with a frown. "I never figured Ashy boy would have been one to use strategy to win a battle."
"It was a great battle Gary," Ash said earnestly. "I know Gabite and I both enjoyed it. We need to have a full battle again soon so we can properly test each other's strength."
"You're on," Gary said with a smile. "How about you show me how your other Pokémon are getting on as my consolation prize."
"Sure thing," Ash replied with a smile.
