Dear precious Marmee and Father!
Oh, what news I have!
We were on shore yesterday, and, well, we ran into a stranger. I mean, at first, he was a complete stranger. But he had the kindest eyes, and his young charge was very jolly, and I invited them to our little picnic. Beth's and mine, I mean. And, oh what do you think? He knew and asked about Father's well-being! His name is Alexander Campbell. He told me to send warmest regards, and wants to send you some information that might help dear Beth. HE's a doctor you know, and he thinks he might be able to help. But I wanted to make sure Father really knew him, that this was not some kind of trick.
You see, he looked over our hotel, and he declared it a disgrace. A cesspool of disease. I will move out regardless. There is at least two consumptives there, and I don't want Beth to be at risk. She is ill enough. Dr. Alex wants me to move into, well, where he and his niece live with their great aunts, Peace and Plenty. I know! Strange names. That's why I want to check with Father to make sure of him before I do something foolishly impulsive.
I looked over my letter and realized it's rather more topsy-turvy than normal for me. But I suppose I'm taking a great many words to ask a simple question. May I take Beth to this doctor? I am so scared for her, Marmee! I think, no, I know, that unless we do something right away, we won't have Beth much longer. She is so frail. Marmee, I don't want to let her slip away. Please tell me what to do!
Sincerely and distractedly,
your Topsy-Turvy Jo
