Author's Note: Hey, what's up? I'm back with a new chapter! It's a couple of hours after the deadline on Saturday, but I still got you guys. I had to redo the first and middle part of this chapter, so it took longer than usual. But! It is done. Thus, this chapter's longer than the last one.
Without further ado, here's the next chapter!
Disclaimer: I only own my characters in this story. The canon characters belong to Kohei Horikoshi.
Aizawa furrows his eyebrows at the woman in front of him. Despite the lack of emotion in her eyes, he can deduce somewhat of what she's experiencing through body language. With wide eyes and holding her hands up to possibly defend herself, she seems surprised to see him, especially after what she said when he reached out to her. He didn't understand why his quirk didn't work on her, but it's something he'll definitely have to look into. Another point of interest is her lack of counteracting against his attempts of capturing her. Perhaps she didn't have the means to or his sudden appearance caught her off guard. Either way, she's not going to leave his sight, regardless of what her goal is for being here.
Crystal didn't recognize this person right away until things have settled between them. Her eyes trail over his clothes, his scarf and the yellow goggles hiding his eyes. She can barely make out a hint of something red behind the goggles. His long, black hair's still floating along with his scarf. The man before her remains tense as the two quietly observe each other. While her eyes didn't leave him, she can hear whispering from nearby onlookers. There's a lot of words that aren't clear enough to decipher, but there is a term she recognizes from one of the older, louder ladies.
Hero.
Squinting, she looks him over once more before the dots connect in her mind.
Crystal recalls her sister mentioning an underground hero using a scarf to capture villains. Unfortunately, she didn't have much to go on since the hero didn't like the spotlight nor did he stick around for an interview. All that Mai told her was that he's an expert of using the shadows to his advantage and before anyone can blink, they're immediately captured by his weapon. At least, those are the stories that Mai told her that she heard from her classmates. Not much is known about the hero. She did, however, give her a name.
The man standing before her is none other than Eraserhead.
Based on what Mai told her, Crystal knows for sure that he's quick on his toes and would have captured her easily if she wasn't in this form. Crystal mentally pats herself on the shoulder for not being a villain in this scenario. Though, she's unsure if he feels the same way. Judging on how tightly he's holding onto his scarf to the point where they're almost as white as rice, she doubts he views her as an innocent citizen. Then again, no ordinary citizen would appear before him like this.
Crystal wiggles her fingers to make sure his attention is solely on her. Eraser tilts his head up and to the side to follow her motions. She closes her eyes to gather herself before speaking.
"Sir." Crystal calls out to him, opening her eyes afterward to watch what he does next.
He didn't respond to her, but he didn't look away either. Crystal's not sure if that's a good or bad thing. She didn't want to call out his hero name either. There's a possibility that it might make her look bad since he's distrustful of her already. It's best to pretend to remain in the dark about that name until he tells her otherwise.
She pauses her motions on her fingers. Crystal relaxes her shoulders to the best of her ability, her face, anything on her body to let him know that she means no harm. "Sir, I'm going to lower my hands... Or would you rather I keep them up? I'm not exactly sure what to do in this situation. The laws are different here in Japan." She slowly brings her hand to her chin and scratches it, a sheepish smile following afterward. "I haven't exactly had the time to look over all of them yet."
"Keep them up."
His voice was low and stern, but she got the message. Despite his harsh tone, Crystal can't help but smile a little brighter in his direction. The fact that he responded back to her question places her mind at ease. She found (albeit on accident) someone that can see and even speak to her. Crystal's not sure on how or why that's possible, but she's not going to complain one bit.
Aizawa glances to where the reporters are and to the citizens around them. The citizens are looking solely at him. There are some that are even giving him weird looks. Others are looking around to see what he's looking at. The lack of attention on the woman in front of him has him on edge. Speaking of which, when he looks back at her, she gazes back at him with the same smile. She remains where she's standing and didn't appear to be looking for a way out. Rather, she only gives him a small wave once he looks back at her.
He releases a long, heavy sigh.
Seeing as how anything he throws at her will only phase through, he backs off and brings his scarf back to him, wrapping securely around his neck. His hair falls and lands messily on his shoulders. He keeps his goggles on though since he briefly noticed someone with a camera nearby.
Aizawa keeps his voice low enough that only she can hear. He's near her enough to do that. "If you're innocent, then follow me. If not, then I'll do everything in my power to bring you down. Do you understand?"
"Loud and clear, sir." the woman tells him, nodding in his direction. He almost misses it, but he notices a slight sparkle in her eyes. Unfortunately, it faded quickly just as it appeared, her eyes going back to being dull and lifeless. "I'm ready when you are."
"Try to keep up."
After those words, Aizawa takes off down an alleyway, leaving the citizens behind. There were some shouts of telling him to come back, but he ignores them. Jumping on top of a dumpster, he lands with ease and kicks off of it to land on top of a wooden fence. Not a single sound from his actions brought any attention to him. If someone were to walk by this particular alleyway, they wouldn't have heard a thing.
"I'm glad I'm not your enemy. You made that look easy."
Aizawa looks down at the woman that's standing beside the fence. She's looking up at him as she jogs in place. The woman pauses mid-step, looks down at her arms and quickly brings them up, palms facing outward. She side glances at him with her head somewhat low. With that gesture alone, it makes her look like she's in trouble for stealing a cookie or something. A small twitch on his lips threaten to curl to the side, but he prevents it from forming by tugging the scarf closer to his mouth and clearing his throat.
"Let's keep going," Aizawa tells her before he takes off down the fence.
Crystal chases after the speedy hero as he easily runs on top of the fence. She phases through objects that stood in her way, though she sometimes has the urge to dodge them instead. Since she didn't feel the need to take in air to properly work her lungs, Crystal's able to keep up the pace without any hint of slowing down. It's as if she has the energy to go on forever. If only she had this type of feeling when she's in her physical state, then she would be able to do more things during the day.
Alas, it cannot become true.
Crystal watches as Eraser jumps off from the fence onto the roof above. Blinking, she continues to run alongside the buildings while keeping an eye out for Eraser. After a couple of seconds have passed, Crystal faintly notices something black moving on top of the rooftops. Grinning, she zones in on him without looking ahead.
Besides, what does she have to worry about? Running into someone? Or crashing into a building?
She notices him briefly peeking over the rooftops.
"Look what's in front of you! Don't just focus on me!" Eraser shouts down at her before he lands on the last house.
Wait. The last house...?
Crystal quickly looks ahead of her, but it's too late. She easily phases through the fence without stopping. There's a downward road ahead with a bit of a drop below her. It's not enough to kill someone if they came this way and fell, but they might sprain their ankle at the sudden drop. Luckily for her, gravity seems to be on her side as she instinctively pushes away from the edge and floats forward. Phasing through some citizens going down the sidewalk, she twists her body until she's floating on her back. Crystal kicks her feet and waves her arms until she's floating upward. Placing her hands on her hips, she gazes around and nods, her grin returning from earlier.
A horn blares out from behind her. Frowning, she twirls in time to face a delivery truck heading her way with no time to dodge. Her eyes widen as Crystal immediately curls into a ball and covers her face. The truck harmlessly moves through her without any hesitation. She remains in that position until she can no longer hear the truck's horn. Swallowing, Crystal unfolds herself until she's floating straighter. Biting her lip, she looks around until she catches sight of Eraser's scarf from the building he last landed on. Scratching her chin, she 'swims' toward him until she's no longer on the road.
Aizawa's standing on top of the roof, his arms crossed in front of his chest. He's nowhere near the edge to alert people of his presence, but he's close enough to show the woman where he is. When that truck came at her without warning, everything in his mind screamed at him to take action and rescue her. Unfortunately, if he were to follow his instincts, he would have made a fool of himself rescuing someone that no one else can see. Besides, with her current form, nothing can harm her. It also gave him a chance to observe more of what she can do.
He watches as she floats near him. Though, judging the way she's moving around, she seems to be struggling to fly around. Once she reaches him, she smiles sheepishly at him once more. Aizawa only shakes his head, his frown deepening.
"You need to be more aware of your surroundings. That would have ended more severely if you weren't able to phase through everything." Aizawa tells her sharply, already feeling the effects of a headache forming in his temple.
She nods at him, her lips relaxing to make her facial expression neutral. She brings her hands behind her back. "I understand. I'll work on doing better in that area."
Aizawa studies her closely, furrowing his eyebrows at her impassive form. Despite his words, she remains calm around him. She even made that comment earlier without any hesitation behind her words. There's nothing on her person that makes her threatening, yet it shouldn't be possible for her to be here. Even if she turns out that she's not a villain in disguise, this situation isn't normal. Possibly for the two of them.
Sighing, he uncrosses his arms and uses one hand to rub behind his neck. "As long as you understand."
He places his other hand on his goggles. Aizawa watches for any reaction as he slowly removes his goggles. She's following his gesture with a tilt of her head, her eyes a bit more open to show her curiosity. Grunting, he pushes the goggles downward until they're within his scarf. Aizawa blinks a couple of times to adjust to the light outside, then he takes out some eye drops from his pocket, tilts his head and plops a drop of liquid onto his dry eyes. Sighing in relief, he shoves the bottle back in his pocket and turns his attention to her.
There's a small smile on her lips once he's facing her. "Since you're showing your face to me, does this mean you trust me a little? If so, don't worry! I shall keep your identity a secret!"
She zips her lips, twists her wrist to show she's 'locked' her mouth and pretends to throw a 'key' over her shoulder. Grinning a little, she gives him two thumbs up. Aizawa just stares at her dully, noticing some resemblance between her energy and his friend's, already feeling the exhaustion creeping up behind him. Speaking of which, he should contact Mic soon to tell him what happened.
Aizawa glances over to where the apartment complex lies. It's better to show Mic of what he encountered than talking it over the phone. Besides, if he can see this woman, then there's a chance that Mic might too. The only way to find out is to bring her with him. Seeing as how she's followed him all this way, there shouldn't be any trouble of having her follow him back to the complex. After all, there was a reason for her going there. He'll ask more about that once he regroups with Mic.
"Bunker-san," Aizawa calls out, turning his gaze back to her, testing out the waters a little.
"Yes, sir?" the woman, Crystal, responds to him instinctively, having landed on the roof when he wasn't looking. Crystal blinks several times before she stares at him with wide eyes, "Wait-" her eyebrows rise while her jaw slacks a little as she points at herself, "-how did you...know my name?"
"We're heading back to the apartment complex. I'll answer your question once we get there. I might be able to figure this out once we're all together." Aizawa informs her as he takes his cell phone out.
"All together... Does this mean someone else might be able to see me, sir? How's that possible?" Crystal questions, shaking her head and frowning in his direction.
"I don't know," Aizawa answers after he texts Mic. He shoves the device back into his pocket. "Your current condition might have some connections to what happened to you last night."
"Last night..." Crystal's voice trails off before she closes her eyes and looks to the side, crinkling her brows. "The night I was attacked. Right... That actually did happen."
Aizawa tugs on his scarf. He's unsure if she's contemplating on something or relieving the memories of last night. Crystal's face didn't change much to show what she might be thinking. He's not the best when it comes to comforting people, but that didn't mean he didn't try. She'll probably not feel anything since anything can go through her. It didn't stop him from placing a hand on her shoulder, though.
As expected, his hand easily goes through her shoulder, but he lets it hover to properly portray the gesture. He can feel a tingly sensation on his hand, the area colder than their surrounding area. Aizawa can also feel the gentlest touch of something against his skin. Perhaps it's similar to a fog that he walks through at night after a stormy evening, or maybe it's closer to the feeling of a tip of a feather that teasingly brushes against him. Whatever it is, it causes a shiver to run through him, goosebumps forming on his skin.
Crystal opens her eyes afterward and turns her head to him, her eyes glancing at the hand on her shoulder. Her eyes trail from the hand toward his shoulder until she's eye to eye with him. They didn't exchange words for a while before Crystal cracks a smile. Using her other hand, she pats his arm as best as she can while her smile widens.
"Thank you. I'll be alright." Crystal tells him before she takes a step back. Once Aizawa brings his hand back to his side, Crystal turns her whole body to the direction of the apartment complex with her hands behind her back. "Shall we get going? I don't want to keep your colleague waiting."
"Hmm. Are you going to run or fly back?" Aizawa questions, preparing his scarf for departure as he walks over to the edge of a building and bends his knees.
"I'm going to run. I'll only take forever if I attempt to fly all the way back to my place." Crystal answers as she follows and stands beside him.
"I see. Don't get lost heading there and don't take too long, either." Aizawa says as he gazes down to make sure the coat is clear.
"Don't worry, I know my way around. In fact-" Crystal trails off as she glances at him with a grin, "-I'll race you there."
Aizawa can't help but let out a scoff at her words. She can't be serious. The woman barely knows how to function in this state, yet she tells him that she'll race him? She's crazy and-... There she goes.
He hears her laughing from the ground as he watches her run out of the alleyway and down the sidewalk, disappearing from his view. Aizawa shakes his head as he snaps his scarf straighter as he stands to his full height. Despite his somewhat tired mind, he can feel a burst of energy coursing through him from Crystal's mischievous stunt. A chuckle escapes him. He swings his weapon forward, snags something and then jumps from the roof, swinging his body around with ease. Once he lands on another building, he dashes off toward their meeting place.
A race it is then.
Hizashi's whistling an upbeat tune while he's tapping his foot. The officers were able to push away the noisy reporters from the area, so now the place's clear of unnecessary clutter and much quieter than before. While he loves to have the spotlight on him at times, Hizashi really isn't in the mood for the media today, especially when it concerns the life of a person. Just as long as they get a good story for their scoop, Hizashi's not exactly sure if they actually care about the person involved or not. Then again, both him and Aizawa were apart of the incident last night, so that added more fuel to the fire.
As long as a hero's involved, there's bound to be a good story, right?
Well, regardless of whatever went through their minds, the officers can do their jobs without having to worry about keeping the media back. They're just waiting on the person to arrive with the key to unlock the door. After glancing at the time while texting Aizawa, it'll have been about fifteen minutes since his conversation with Akemi. Her friend should be here soon enough.
Hizashi notices something falling towards him from above. He looks up just in time to see Aizawa dropping from a building and landing beside him. With the twist of his wrist, he brings his scarf back to him with practiced ease and let it curl around his neck. Aizawa nods at a nearby officer that greets him upon his arrival, but he turns his attention to him. Hizashi grins at him and snaps his fingers in the direction of where the reporters were.
"Hey, what's up? Like how it's nice and quiet around here? 'Cause I sure do! They left not too long ago." Hizashi informs him, noticing his friend's shoulder slightly relaxing.
"Good."
"So, where'd you go anyway? You hung up on me before I can ask anything else." Hizashi questions before pouting afterward.
"Someone caught my eye," Aizawa answers, his gaze turning to the front where the police are mostly gathered.
"Oh~? Someone actually caught your eye? Who's the lucky person?" Hizashi teases as he follows his friend's gaze.
Before Hizashi can further tease him, he catches sight of something moving in the distance. He squints his eyes to see a bit clearer of what's coming towards them. The person skids to a stop and looks around frantically for something, no one seeming to pay any close attention to this stranger's sudden appearance. Soon, they turn their whole body to where the two of them are standing and they point at them. Afterward, they're running to where they are. Though they have to pass through the police, yet no one's still paying them any attention. Hizashi takes a step forward to warn the officers, but Aizawa stops him. He goes to ask Aizawa what's going on, however, words soon fail him after witnessing this person's next move.
Without any hesitation, they run and phase through the officers. There's no reaction from either party. It didn't take long for them to come through unscathed, their appearance familiar once they're closer to his sight. Even after they came out of the crowd, they didn't stop running toward them.
Hizashi can feel himself go cold once he realizes who's coming towards them. Her clothes are the same along with her physical appearance. Once she's closer, he notices a couple of exceptions; the color of her hair and the condition of her eyes. As soon as he peers into her lifeless eyes, his stomach drops as a wave of guilt seem to nag him at the back of his mind. She stops in front of them and gazes at them, a small smile on her face even if there's no warmth behind those pale eyes of hers.
The one standing before them is none other than the woman from last night, Crystal Bunker.
Aizawa watches his friend's face go pale after Crystal came closer. Judging by his reaction, he can see her as well. It's been a while seeing Mic become speechless after encountering something he can't explain. This being one of those rare moments in his career as a hero. Now that he knows for sure that Mic can see her, perhaps now they can get to the bottom of this and figure out a way to solve this problem.
Crystal blinks owlishly at the blond man with the cockatoo hairstyle. His appearance looks familiar to her, though she can't figure out where at the moment. Her mind's on the verge of figuring it out as she squints at him. Even with the orange shades on, she notices his focus is on her general location. She didn't really know if he can see her or not, but there's a way to find out.
Humming to herself, she brings a hand up and slowly moves it around. He simply follows her gesture with his head. Pausing, she gapes at him and quickly brings her hand back.
"It's true. You can see me too!" Crystal says, seeming breathless by her statement.
The man immediately whirls on Eraser, his hands wildly gesturing towards Crystal, his face still pale. "Hey, Eraser! What the hell man!? Why is she here?! No no no! How is she here?! Why does she look-!?"
"Keep your voice down, Mic. You're drawing attention to us." Eraser scolds, activating his quirk since Mic's voice got louder towards the end.
Crystal looks around her to see that some of the officers are giving the two of them odd stares. She remains quiet as the two of them converse while keeping their voices low. Mic's still using his hands to portray his anxious feelings. Eraser, on the other hand, had deactivated his quirk and speaks in a level-headed manner. She can't tell what he's feeling since his facial expression remains neutral. Raising her head, she looks at the apartment complex and turns to where her apartment lies. She picks at her shirt as she continues to stare.
She wants to move closer and enter her apartment. Seeing her sister nowhere in sight, Crystal can only assume that she's with a friend. She would have been speaking with the officers by now and they would have entered to search for...who knows what. A connection to what happened last night, perhaps? Crystal didn't know. She did, however, know that her cat needs to be fed since she usually feeds her in the morning. The poor thing's probably starving by now and wondering where she is.
Noticing some movement from the heroes, Crystal turns her attention to them and brings her hands down in front of her. Mic appears serious with the way he's frowning and crinkling his brows, his focus back on her. He breathes in deeply before pointing at her, his frown somehow deepening.
"Are you here to haunt us?"
Crystal's taken back by hearing this person speak fluent English. She did hear him yell 'no' multiple times in English, but she didn't think much on it. There's a hint of an accent behind his words, though it adds a bit to his loud, expressive character. It takes her a moment to process his words. Crystal brings her lips inward as soon as it dawns on her and she does her best to suppress a snort. Her shoulders are shaking from trying to not laugh, but she's able to shake her head to answer his question. His frown turns into a pout. Huffing, he steps closer to her, his hands resting on his hips as he peers down at her, taller than her by a good amount of inches. A giggle manages to escape her lips, but she's able to hold it back before she loses it.
"I'm serious...! Why are you laughing? Come on... Cut us some slack here, will ya? I don't wanna have a ghost following me around." Mic whines, though he still keeps his voice low enough for only them.
Crystal arches an eyebrow at him, a couple of giggles escape her as her lips curve into a smirk. Placing a hand on her hip, she tilts her head up at him. "And why not? Don't you want some company?"
"No thank you!"
Crystal laughs at his quick answer, unable to hold back this time. She briefly notices Eraser shaking his head at their interaction, but didn't stop them. Once her attention's back on Mic, he's watching her with a small grin, his face regaining some color after some time has passed. Once Crystal's laughter dies down and she composes herself, he speaks up.
"You are Bunker, Crystal, right?" Mic asks. Judging by the sound of his tone of familiarity, Crystal assumes he's just double checking.
"That's correct. If you don't mind me asking, how come the two of you know me? I don't believe we've ever met before. That is until now." Crystal questions, her eyes trailing between Eraser and Mic, though mostly on Eraser since he did promise to answer her questions earlier.
"We were there last night after your encounter with a villain." Eraser answers. There's a certain edge to his tone, but he didn't reveal anything on his face.
"After..." Crystal trails off, turning her head to the side as she traces through her memories.
The first thing that appears in her mind was a blurry figure patting her cheek to keep her awake. They had blond hair and black clothing. She heard a voice trying to coax her to hang on, but she was too exhausted to focus on anything. Her vision was failing her and it didn't help that she was already blind without her glasses. She can recall another figure joining them and applying pressure to her abdomen. There are colors that keep appearing in her mind.
Black. Yellow. Red.
Everything seems to be going at a rapid pace through her memories, yet she still remains in a calm state. Once things are clearer in her mind, she turns back to the gentlemen. She flicks her gaze to Mic as she pats her cheek.
"My vision was blurry at the time because I didn't have my glasses on," Crystal adjusts her glasses afterward. She continues once they're on properly, "However, I do remember seeing someone with blond hair and wearing something black. Now that I get a better look at you, you do resemble the silhouette I saw last night. You were trying to keep me awake, weren't you? By patting my cheek and talking to me?"
"... Hey, how are you able to remember that without freaking out? I mean, you're right, but you went through something terrifying! Are you usually this calm?" Mic questions, his expression showing concern and disbelief.
Crystal shakes her head, frowning a little. "Not to this extent. I can still feel emotions, but they're easily manageable in this form."
She didn't go into further detail of her state. These heroes were there when she was dying. Crystal didn't feel the need to add more salt to their wounds. More than likely, they're already feeling guilty of not being able to prevent any injuries on her. She's seen it several times in the past during her first job.
A hero's anguish of not being able to save a citizen in time.
"Well, that explains it..." Mic mutters, but Aizawa's able to pick up on it.
Aizawa crosses his arms. It's not every day they come across something like this. There's obviously nothing normal about this. Her being here in the first place. Not being able to properly convey what she's feeling. There are some benefits to her condition since she's able to calmly answer their questions about what happened last night, however, it's something she shouldn't be facing regardless. He's thankful he didn't have to deal with this at the beginning of his career as a hero. Aizawa's not sure if he can see someone that's not alive looking every day, especially if this person's already in critical condition.
Seeing that she appears content with their answer, he steps forward and uncrosses his arms. Crystal shifts her attention to him. He tilts his head down to properly look at her.
"We need to know why you came here." Aizawa brings up, going straight to the point to gain some insight into her motive.
Seeming to understand, she nods at him. Crystal holds two fingers up. "I wanted to see if my sister's here and-" she lowers her middle finger, "- I wanted to see if my cat's okay. I usually feed her in the morning and since I'm not here... Well... I got worried since no one's around to take care of her."
"... Cat?" Aizawa asks, ignoring the knowing look from Mic.
Crystal seems to brighten at his curiosity about her cat. Smiling, she claps her hands together as she leans side to side, seeming to bounce a little at this gesture.
"Yes! Her name's Luna and she's a Ragdoll with beautiful blue eyes. She's very lovey, especially around strangers." Crystal chuckles a bit. "She's also great to snuggle with."
"Luna..." Aizawa mutters the name, glancing up at the apartment complex for a moment before looking back to Crystal, her gaze on him. "You more than likely figured it out, but your sister's not here. We're waiting for someone to deliver a spare key to your apartment."
Crystal nods and didn't say anymore. That is, until Mic speaks up, his eyebrows furrowing in her direction. "How did you get here, though?"
"I walked." Crystal answers simply, bringing her hands down and clasping them in front of her.
"Out of the hospital?" Aizawa further questions, peering down at her to find any trace of lies on her face.
Crystal's quiet for a moment until she slowly shakes her head, her eyes flickering between Mic and Aizawa, and then her expression hardens somewhat.
"No. I woke up floating in the sky near the crosswalks. I was able to float down and I tried to get someone's attention. No one could see or hear me. I felt...that I needed to come here. I wanted to see how my sister and my cat were doing." Crystal smiles. Compared to her other smiles, this one felt more empty and bitter. "Even if they wouldn't be able to see me."
Before anything else can be discussed between them, a shout from a police officer catches all of their attention. They turn to the source, watching as a police officer walks up to them with a young man beside him.
"Oh, it's Aikyo. He seems to be well." Crystal mutters to herself.
The young man appears to be a young adult with a hint of stubble on his chin. His height's noticeable beside the police officer as he walks tall beside him. His short, black hair's combed back at the top to show off his forehead. The piercings on his ears glint from the sunlight. As he comes closer, his dark, purple eyes seem to brighten at the appearance of the heroes. He brings his hands out of his dark jeans and waves the key around to show them he has it.
"Morning! My friend's with her sister now, so I hope it's alright if I brought the key instead." the man, Aikyo, informs them.
He plops the key in the officer's hand and the officer takes off, leaving Aikyo with the heroes and Crystal. He turns to them and gives them a nod.
"Thanks for being there for Bunker-san despite her er...current situation. If you guys weren't there, then well... You guys already know." he tells them, scratching behind his head awkwardly.
"It's our duty to help others," Aizawa tells him, facing the young man and shoving his hands into his pockets. "Was there anything else you need? We need to get back to work."
"Ah, no no! I just wanted to express my thanks was all. I'm going to get back to Akemi-chan. Let us know if you need anything else." Aikyo tells them before he turns and heads off in the opposite direction.
There's a moment of awkward silence between the three as Crystal begins to turn toward the stairway. "If you guys don't mind, I want to check on my cat. Please make yourselves at home if you decide to enter."
Aizawa didn't stop her as she walks over to the staircase. Once she comes close to it, she lifts her foot and lowers it on the first step. Unfortunately, her foot phases through and she only stares in silence. Crystal moves her arms around the staircase and notices that her whole body just phases through. Her body slumps as she throws her head back, frustration noticeable in her groan.
"I knew it. Well, at least I tried." Crystal shakes her head and shrugs, sighing as she does so.
Aizawa notices in the corner of his eye that Mic's trying to suppress his snickers. He then hears Crystal huff and turns his sight back to her, those unemotional eyes looking back at him. Crystal pouts and furrows her eyebrows. She points at them.
"I'm going to float into my apartment. No laughing at my attempts please." Crystal tells them.
Mic goes to open his mouth before Aizawa elbows him in his side. He grunts at the impact and swirls on his friend.
"Hey Eraser, what was that for?!" Mic questions, rubbing the sore spot on his side with a pout.
"Don't talk to her while she's far from us. We're still around the police." Aizawa tells him in a low tone, tilting his head to the side where the officers are planning among themselves.
Mic turns his attention to the crowd before he mutters an 'Oh' from his lips. It would be bad if Mic starts talking to something that they can't see. They'll mostly show concern for his well-being, though there are others that might question his mental status. He didn't want to add something damaging to his reputation, especially around people that'll have his back in times of trouble.
While the two of them are looking elsewhere, Crystal bounces in place and then kicks hard against the ground, not hearing her impact or kicks on the solid ground. Next thing she knows, she's floating once more, but a little higher than she wants. Flailing her arms around, Crystal does her best to stop herself from floating even higher and turns herself around to kick her feet in mid-air. Looking around, she notices that the scenery isn't moving out of her sight and that she's floating above the apartment complex. Sighing in relief, Crystal looks down at the heroes and notices that they didn't see her stunt.
At least she hopes so. Doing something that she's never done before in front of people is always embarrassing and brings her anxiety up a notch, her mind going fast and unsteady. Luckily, Crystal didn't feel her anxiety spike at all. Rather, she continues to feel ridiculously calm despite her situation. She can feel a sense of happiness that she's able to successfully float again, but there's a lack of stress pumping through her veins.
It continues to puzzle her of not being able to feel anything going on inside of her body. Did this mean that her body functions are numb to her? Will she continue to not hear or feel her heart beat against her chest? Not being able to cry when she wants to? Not being able to feel the warmth of the sunlight on her skin, or experience a chill that will give her goosebumps?
If that's the case, it shouldn't really surprise her due to being a ghost, but she's still able to grasp her emotions, even if they have somewhat dulled.
What's up with that?
Shrugging and shaking her head, Crystal turns her attention back to the apartment complex, kicking her feet towards the apartment as if she's swimming.
She'll think more on that stuff later. Right now, she has a duty of reaching her apartment and seeing to her cat.
As she's 'floating' back toward her apartment, Crystal peers down to see the police officers making their way to her home. Looking over at the heroes, she notices Mic looking around before looking up at the sky. Crystal gives him a little wave and a grin before entering through the top of her home, easily phasing through. After making it through, she kicks her feet and flails her arms to set her up straight. Crystal plants her feet on the ground, her body still feeling light to her. Crystal makes her way around her apartment to locate her cat.
"Luna...? Pretty girl, where are you?" Crystal calls out to her as she continues to walk around.
As she makes it to her bedroom, she can hear her front door opening from behind, but didn't turn around to see which police officer came in. Her focus is on her room as she phases through the cracked door. Peeking through, she slowly looks around to see that nothing's been touched since she last left it, but she finds her cat resting on her queen size bed. Smiling, she walks over to her and bends down at the edge of the bed, reaching out to pet her.
Her hand hovers over Luna's body. Luna's ear twitch and she shifts a little, but she didn't wake up. Crystal brings her hand down to rest on her little, furry head.
Crystal's hand phases through her cat's head. Luna still didn't react to this phenomenon. Crystal's shoulders drop and she brings her hand back to her chest, a frown prominent on her features.
"I'm sorry, Luna. You must have been very worried. I hope you slept okay despite me not being here to cuddle with you." Crystal tells her softly, not wanting to wake her up even if she knows that Luna can't hear her.
The door creaks open from behind, but she didn't make any movements to greet whoever entered her room. Luna lifts her head and looks through Crystal, her blue eyes blinking slowly. With a meow, she rolls over and stands on her paws, stretching her back and yawning. After shaking off the sleep, she bends a little before jumping through Crystal and landing behind her.
She can hear Luna purring up a storm behind her. Biting her lip, Crystal slowly stands and rubs her arm. Sighing, Crystal turns around to face whoever entered her room. Eraser's crouching close to the ground as he scratches Luna's ears and chin. She smiles at the scene. Even if Crystal can't pet her, she feels better knowing that Luna's receiving attention from someone. Crystal watches a little bit before she steps toward them.
"This might be wrong of me to ask due to my situation..." Eraser lifts his head to look at her, momentarily stopping his motions of petting Luna. The cat continues to bump her forehead against his hand, but he didn't move to pet her yet. "Since you're able to touch her, can you please put food in her bowl? Maybe change her water too? If it's not too much trouble."
"Where do you keep her food?" Eraser whispers, resuming his action of petting Luna and glancing to the side for a moment.
Crystal widens her eyes a little due to his lack of hesitation to her request. Once Eraser turns his gaze back to her, she shakes her head to overcome her surprise and smiles wider. She points to Luna.
"Her food's in the second cabinet to the right. If you ask her where her food is, she'll direct you to it." Crystal chuckles, seeming to lighten up a little. "As soon as she hears the word 'food', she'll be running towards it."
Eraser quirks an eyebrow in her direction. He looks down at the feline. Luna's still purring at the attention she's receiving. After scratching her head a while longer, Eraser pulls his scarf down a little before speaking.
"Where's your food?"
Luna's head perks up as she meows and maneuvers around the hero. Both of them continue to hear distant meowing from her. Crystal chuckles before walking through the wall beside Eraser and easily goes through it. She looks over and watches as her cat moves around some of the officers toward the kitchen area. Crystal hears movement behind her. Glancing over her shoulder, she watches Eraser standing fully and makes his way around her to reach the whining cat. Crystal silently follows behind. She picks up some of the conversations from the officers.
Most of them are curious about Luna's behavior. There's even a full-on cat person at the scene who's busying himself in looking through items. Crystal watches him for a moment, tilting her head as he shifts through different documents that she placed in her one drawer by her couch. He then pulls a small door underneath the drawer and pulls out a couple of cat toys that have catnip inside. Crystal's lip begins to curl into a grin at the situation. Amusement bubbling within her body.
"Of course a cat person is able to locate the catnip. How funny!" Crystal burst into a fit of giggles, her body shaking at the situation.
Aizawa's standing within the kitchen with Luna sitting on the floor. Luna's watching him with her bright, blue eyes and meows at him. He hears laughter from the living room and turns toward the sound. Some of the officers are teasing their cat colleague about finding catnip. The car officer only hisses at them, even throwing the cat toys at them and goes back to work, placing the cat toys to the side.
Crystal's giggling while walking away and heading toward him. She looks over and grins at him, yet it still didn't reach her eyes, except there's a bit of crinkle at the side of her eyes. Despite the lack of emotion in her cloudy, pale eye, she's still able to portray happiness through body language.
How is she still able to laugh despite her situation?
"Ah... I needed that. Did you find the cat food yet, Eraser-san?" Crystal asks, her smile not fading any time soon.
"... Not yet." Aizawa turns away from her before reaching for the second cabinet.
He opens it up and observes the multiple cat food cans stacked neatly inside. They're all of the same brands, but with different flavors. Some are beef. Some are chicken. There are others that have fish flavor, though he's not surprised to find that kind within this stack.
Aizawa scans through the different selections before picking out the chicken flavor. Luna meows beside him as she nudges against his leg. Crystal steps back a bit to stay out of his way. Aizawa pulls on the lid opener and peels back the lid with ease. Crouching once more, he pours the content in Luna's cat bowl, the cat sitting patiently in front of the bowl. As soon as the food touches her bowl, Luna digs in and begins to eat at a fast pace. Aizawa notices movement in the corner of his eye. Turning his head a little, he watches as Crystal moves to the other side and bends her knees, resting on her legs instead of the floor. Despite the fact that the two of them are crowding the cat, Crystal didn't sit too close to him and kept her distance.
Whether out of respect for his comfort or not, Aizawa's not sure.
"Poor baby. It's a bit later than normal for her meal time, but I'm glad that she's able to eat now." Crystal admits, looking down at the cat and holding herself back to pet her.
The two of them sit there in silence, watching Luna eat her food. Crystal can hear the police officers moving around her home and talking with one another, but she isn't focused on their conversations. She lifts her head a little and gazes at a nearby wall, her eyes softening.
The reality of the situation weighs heavily on her mind, taking the moment to really grasp that she isn't able to touch anything. As far as she knows, only Eraser and Mic can see her. What about her sister? Her father? Her friends? How is it possible that the two heroes are able to see her when others cannot? Did something happen after she blacked out? If so, what exactly? The heroes can't tell her since they didn't know. The only thing that she knows is that they were by her side.
Releasing a sigh, she slowly turns her head to Eraser, noticing he's been watching her.
His dark, flat eyes are unwavering, yet she can see that his eyes are bloodshot and underneath them, a hint of shadows that tells her that he didn't sleep well. Despite this, there's a hint of sharpness within those eyes, alert to his surroundings even if he appears to be tired. Swallowing, she looks away, unable to continue looking into his eyes.
"Eraser-san?" Crystal hears a grunt from the man, acknowledging her. "My sister... Do you happen to know where she is?"
"At the hospital." Eraser answers in a low tone, though not threatening. Just quiet enough to where only Crystal can hear him.
Crystal slowly nods before looking down. She cradles her hands. "I see. Did I die at the hospital...?"
"You're not dead."
His words are harsh and sharp enough to make Crystal freeze. She didn't feel her heart race nor beat anxiously within her chest. Crystal did, however, feel alarmed at his sudden change of tone. She slowly raises her head to meet his gaze. Her eyes widen in his direction afterward, her jaw slightly dropping at the fact that he didn't hesitate to point that out. She notices that he's watching her closely, blinking slow and seeming to be unaffected by her shocked expression.
Sighing, he brings a hand behind his neck and rubs it, tilting his head to stretch out the muscle. Aizawa's still watching her.
"You're in critical condition at the hospital. The doctors are doing what they can to keep you alive. The last thing we heard was that you were stable, but they're keeping a close eye on you." Aizawa informs her, watching as her eyebrows furrow in his direction.
"Critical condition...?" Crystal repeats slowly. Eraser lazily nods, bringing his hand down in front of him again. Biting her lip, she looks away from him for a moment and looks at Luna, watching as she drinks her water now. "Then, how do you explain my current predicament?"
That's a question even Aizawa didn't have an answer to. When he used his quirk on her, she didn't solidify and his capture weapon only passed through her. Only Mic and himself are able to have contact with her. Her dead appearance didn't dull her emotions since she's able to laugh and smile, despite the emotion not reaching her eyes. She can't touch anything, except phase through walls like a spirit. Crystal has shown she lacks experience in controlling her form, but she has determination from what he observed. Perhaps stubbornness as well.
Crystal didn't say anything more as she stands and tilts her head up, noticing an officer coming into the kitchen. Eraser follows her line of sight and shoves his hands into his pockets before standing as well.
"Eraserhead, sir! We've looked through each room and we don't see any signs of a villain nearby. Everything's clear!" the officer reports, saluting the hero before him.
Aizawa nods at the man before turning and heading toward the entrance. "I'm not needed here, then. I'll be outside if you need me or Mic."
"Yes, sir!"
The pro hero can hear the man's footsteps fade into the next room from behind. Aizawa heads out and casually looks over his shoulder. He watches as Crystal waves at her cat, even if the feline can't see her, and soon follows behind him. Even if she can phase through the officers, she politely walks around them and even steps over their foot if they're kneeling on the floor. Looking ahead, Aizawa walks out the door and steps down the stairs. Mic's waiting for him at the same spot, his back leaning against a pillar as he looks around. In his peripheral vision, he can see Crystal 'floating' down beside the railing of the stairs. Once he fully looks at her, Crystal gives him a small grin and continues her way down to the ground.
As soon as her feet touch the ground, she walks over to the heroes once Eraser joins up with Mic. The loud hero grins at her as soon as she stops in front of them, his presence welcoming and not as wry or tense as before.
"Your cat good?" Mic asks as he pushes himself off the pillar.
Smiling, Crystal nods and tilts her head toward Eraser's direction. "Yes, she's doing alright. Eraser-san fed her and she was able to drink some water." Mic's grin widens in Eraser's direction, but the pro hero didn't acknowledge him as he only pulls his capture weapon further up.
Crystal continues to smile at the two before her eyes lower and her smile fades, clasping her hands in front of her stomach. Taking a deep breath, she looks up at them once more, expression solemn as she tightens her grasps on her hands.
"Due to my current situation, I'm not sure how to proceed since you two are able to see me. I was going to see my sister, but from what I understand, she's currently at the hospital. Most likely by my side. I don't know which hospital she's at, but before I ask... What are your plans with me? Or if you have any plans at all?" Crystal asks, glancing between the two of them as she spoke.
Mic brings his hands up and lightly shakes them. "Wait wait wait! What's with the serious expression? You think we're going to drag you away or something?"
Crystal furrows her eyebrows and tilts her head. "Isn't that your plan?"
"No, no, no." Mic wiggles his finger at her and shakes his head, his hair following his motion. "It looks like you're in a tough predicament and since Eraser-" he thrusts his thumb toward his friend, "-can't exactly use his quirk on you, you're stuck and don't have anywhere to go. At least, not permanently. Besides, it's not like we can touch you or anything. We'll just phase through!"
Crystal studies the heroes in front of her. She bites her lip and glances to the side, different thoughts rushing through her mind.
Is there a chance that the heroes are willing to help her out? But why...? They don't owe her anything. Besides, they did their job last night in doing their best to help her out, despite her not being able to fully see them. They got to her in time before she fully passed on. Yes, she's in critical condition at the hospital, but she's still alive. So, how is she in this form? Why is she a ghost? Is she close to death and that's why she's this way? There are so many questions that she wants answers to, but she won't get them here. The heroes didn't have any answers either. It relaxes her a little to know that she's not the only one that didn't understand her situation.
She looks back at the heroes, noticing that the two of them are watching her closely. Licking her lips, Crystal opens her mouth.
"Does this mean...you want to help me?" Crystal asks, though with some hesitation at the beginning.
"That's exactly what I mean!" Mic's answers, his usual grin not dimming in the slightest. "Eraser's going to help out too!"
Crystal glances at the quiet hero. He only nods in her direction. She can't help but smile at the heroes, a sense of relief easing her mind.
She wants to ask them why they're willing to help her. Though, she feels now isn't the best time to ask, especially when the heroes are willing to help her out now. So, Crystal decides on the next best question to keep things going. Her smile softens.
"Thank you. If you guys are willing to help me, then what's our next course of action?"
To be continued...
That's all for now! The next chapter will be up on either the 29th or 30th of this month. The next chapter should be easier to edit (or add more things to it. Who knows. XP), so it'll more than likely show up on Saturday. No promises though. This story shouldn't be anywhere else but this one and on the AO3 site under the username SilverHeart1821. No one has permission to post this story elsewhere. You may link it back if you want to, but that's it. Thank you for understanding.
