Chapter Two

Mud Dudes and Stupid Strawberries

I looked at Liam in disbelief. What camp? And why do I have to go there?

"What?" I asked completely confused.

"Camp," Liam said and pulled me away toward the road and called a taxi.

"New York, please" Liam said to the driver.

"I dunno if I can take two twelve-year-old kids all the way to New York," the driver said while rubbing his fingers together.

Liam pulled out his wallet and took out about $500. I looked at him in surprise.

"Make it fast and I'll double that."

Within eighteen hours, only stopping for the bathroom, we made it to New York and I was still thoroughly confused about why we had to come. I asked Liam this about every five minutes while in the taxi and once a vine popped out if the car floor and grabbed him in the leg, forcing him in an uncomfortable position, just right for me to blackmail him.

"Tell me or I tell Daisy Jones you like her." I stated.

"You won't get the chance. Once you get to camp you won't see Daisy Jones ever again. Besides, You'll find out once we get there." The vine recoiled and I stayed silent for the rest of the ride with my arms folded across my chest.

After arriving in New York at 8 p.m. the next day, Liam hitched yet another taxi.

"Do we have to go?" I whined

"YES! To Farm Road 3.141, the base of the hill"

"Hop in," the taxi driver said.

Liam paid him the money and the driver drove faster than Danica Patrick did in the Indy 500. I had a very hard time holding on to my lunch (which was just a McDonalds burger).

We finally arrived at an old farmhouse with a sign in front of it saying "Delphi Strawberry Fields", and the driver sped off, leaving me and Liam stranded, hundreds of miles from home.

"Liam," I asked trying, but failing at keeping my temper under control, "Why are we going to a STRAWBERY FIELD! AFTER TAKING A TAXI ALL THE WAY FROM ILLINOIS!"

"Calm down, Katara. This is the camp I was talking about. Remember?"

"Yes, but I still don't understand why we had to come in the first place-"

Liam cut me off "Look, if we get up that hill, Chiron will explain everything to you and you might get to stay at camp year-round, and then you won't have to see your father ever again"

I hated it when Liam mentions my father. He knows perfectly well that my father and I don't get along. That's the whole reason why I go to boarding school instead of public school.

I shut up for a second, but then opened my mouth; "Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?

Thump

"That."

Thump

"Run! If we can make it to the pine on top of the hill, we'll be safe!"

Thump.

I looked back to see what was making that thumping noise, but all I saw was a large man covered in dirt.

"Oh no," Liam muttered, "It's a Golem"

As Liam and I approached the top of the hill, another Golem sprouted out of the ground and blocked our direct route to the farmhouse.

"This is not good," Liam said a little worried.

Just as he spoke, four more Golems rose out of the ground and joined the two already there. Once they were up close, I got a better look at them. They were enormous creatures that were shaped like a man, but were made out of dirt and were covered in flowers and leaves.

I had to admit they were scary, even scarier than the snake lady was.

"We'll have to fight them to get to camp," Liam tossed me a dagger, "Fight then with it." He said while pulling out a bow and some arrows.

Not a second later, one of the Golems came right at me and, upon instinct, I stabbed the Golem with the dagger, and it burst into gold dust. I looked over at Liam who was fighting two of them, but another was charging at him.

"LIAM!" I yelled trying to make him see the other Golem right behind him.

He turned around and shot an arrow in its eye, "Two down, four to go!" He yelled to me, while it turned to dust.

Both of us kept fighting, but each time we destroyed one, more came rising out of the ground.

Eventually, Liam ran out of arrows.

"I'm all out! This is not good at all!" Liam spoke in what sounded like Greek, but I perfectly understood what he said.

Soon, I was getting tired of fighting alone. But Liam had no weapon and was desperately trying to fight without one. Well, this was certainly a different day. My mind said to me just as more Golems came.

I looked over my shoulder to see how Liam was doing, but all I saw was a lump on the ground that one of the Golems had his club raised over.

I yelled something indestinct above the Golems' roars of glee. I had enough. Who did they think they were, attacking my best friend?

The ground started shaking. The trees stretched their branches toward the Golems. Vines sprouted from the ground and held the Golems in place.

"DON'T YOU DARE!" I yelled at all of them.

The Golems dissolved before my eyes, but instead of a gold burst, it was more of a melting into the ground.

I ran over to Liam, who was unconscious on the ground, and picked him up, while running toward the farmhouse.

"Fine," I huffed "We'll go to the stupid strawberry fields."
