Chapter 1

Artemis sat in a classroom at the public school he was now attending. His mother had forced him to change schools. She wanted Artemis to be closer to home. Artemis missed Saint Bartley's. This school obviously didn't get anywhere near the same amount of funding.

"Artemis Fowl," the teacher called. "Present," Artemis said. The teacher marked his name off of the list. All the students turned around and craned their necks to get a good look at Artemis.

The teacher finished marking the roll and the bell rang signaling the start of first period. Artemis quickly left the room.

"Hey you, the new kid," someone called. Artemis turned around to see a blonde girl with a shocking amount of freckles running towards him. She stopped in front of him. "Your name's Artemis, right?" she asked.

"That's correct," Artemis replied.

"Cool name," she said.

"Thanks," Artemis said.

"My name's Bree," the girl told him.

"It's a pleasure to meet you," Artemis said.

"Do you need any help finding your next class?" Bree asked. Artemis didn't actually need help, for he had already memorized the school layout but he allowed Bree to lead him anyway.

"Well, here's your class," she said, pointing at the door. "Hey I got an idea! Why don't you hang out with me and my friends at break?"

Artemis forced himself not to say something demeaning or sarcastic and agreed to 'hang out' with Bree. As he sat down in class he frowned. He kept getting the feeling someone was watching him.

He watched the exchange between Artemis and Bree with a scowl on his face. That girl was not to be trusted. Couldn't Artemis see that? He needed to keep a close eye on him. But he had other things to do. Then he had an idea.

A/N Yay, chapter one completed. This is my least favorite chapter. By the way, this is set in between The Opal Deception and The Lost Colony.
