Here we go. Revamped chapter 2.
If you are wondering what are Jacklin's powers just read ahead. I cut a lot out of them, but in exchange there is more to her character. Which I think is a good exchange don't you agree?

(Chapter 2)
Jacklin's Feelings
Lily was not the same since that day. And if Jacklin was honest with herself neither was she. Jack was the family's light when their mother died due to illness. Their father had fallen into depression and only Jack could get him out of it. Even if it was for a short while.
He played with Lily and got her to smile. Jacklin got him to help her with the chores in the house, and was cheered up by his way of trying to make each one fun.
It was only Jacklin who knew how much their mother's death affected the fun loving prankster. She held him in the night as he cried, and spun tales as she has always done. Stories of giants made from snow and ice, wolves chasing a fierce warrior woman across the sky, and of sweet little maidens who helped flowers grow in the wake of spring.
She even told him that the Man in the Moon was, in truth, a warrior who hid her true appearance to hide from the Wolf who chased after her every night. That as a man she wandered on moonlight with a bundle of sticks on her back. Trying to find her brother who commanded the North Wind and her sister who made flowers out of thin air. For only together they would defeat the Wolf and be a family once more.
Jack always loved that story. Usually joking that she was adding the wolves because she didn't like them.
Which was only part of the reason for them, truthfully Jacklin couldn't really explain why she told the story like that. After all the Moon wasn't anything more than God's creation on the forth day, right? She never heard anything like her stories from anyone. In fact their mother would scold Jacklin for telling such stories. They featured women being unladylike, and giving her brother ideas.
There was a time after their mother's death that Jack did not talk to her for days. It was sudden. And Jacklin didn't know what to do about it. He did not let her comfort him physically and completely ignored her whenever she tried to tell him a story. Lily enjoyed them however so it wasn't that big of a deal seeing they all had to share a room. It was not until she finally broke down for the first time since their mother's death did he finally hugged her and tried to seek the comfort of her body heat and of her stories. Though he did take over in the storytelling the day she broke down. She was too out of it to do so.
But now their father was almost never home. Always working, trying to drown the pain of the loss of his only son soon after he finally started to get over the loss of his wife. Even when he was home, it was like being around a specter. He hardly spoke, and it took every thing Jacklin could do to make sure he ate and slept. His deep brown eyes were lost and foggy whenever he looked at her or Lily. Sadness and sorrow followed him like a cloud.
Lily cried often and would not work on her lessons that Jacklin tried her hardest to get into the little girl's head. The youngest blamed herself for their brother's death, and would not listen to Jacklin when she told her that it was no one's fault. It just happened.
"The Lord had something for him to do. And he could not do it on mortal ground."
But Lily did not buy it.
In truth Jacklin herself wasn't very sure of her words. Her faith was rocky at best and nonexistent at worst. Her ability to feel and see what was on the other side was the main reason for this. She did not do it often for it was dangerous. With the Boogieman, Wendigo (Nasty thing that), and all the other demons of the world, but she made an effort to befriend or at least know who was a good spirit.
She had met Father Christmas who scolded her for being naughty for years on end so her family would have coal to burn. Never mind having the gall to wake up when he slips out the hearth to give presents. He was completely shocked when she hugged him for giving Lily two presents. And giving Jack and her coal. (Three for her! Two for him! They did good that year.) She had ran into the Boogieman plenty of times, he seemed to like their house for some reason. Sure he was scary. Tall and black with glowing eyes and a nasty smile, but somehow Jacklin wasn't as afraid of him as she thought she would be when she first met him.
Though hitting him with the frying pan probably helped with not being afraid. She woke up because something went bump in the main room. It was before Lily was born and Jacklin was uptight and jumpy because something just seemed off for days on end. When she saw the tall being standing by the table she didn't think. She just went over to the hearth, picked up the frying pan, and hit it. The Boogieman ended up curling over his aching stomach which gave her a good opportunity to hit his head.
It was rather funny to see him unconscious on the floor. She had hit his head once more for good measure before going back to bed. She had nightmares for the whole night. Wolves chasing her as she screamed for her brother. Begging to know if he was alright. That he was safe. Nothing but the howls of the Wolves answered her. She woke up drenched in sweat, but seeing the pan beside her made her puff out her chest in pride. She was able to defeat the Boogieman! No matter if her dreams were horrible afterward she did it, and would do so again.
She had done so many a time afterward, for scaring her little brother and sister. She could handle him and protect her siblings. The Boogieman didn't often mess with them after the sixtieth time she hit him. The last time was in the groin with a knife. She really didn't get why he was so easy for her to overcome. It was laughable really.
But that was not all Jacklin saw or knew. She knew that the Sun was pulling the Earth around, while the Moon was pulled by the Earth. Which didn't make any sense. Seeing God made Earth as the center of the Universe. But she knew, and no matter how much she would try to convince herself, she couldn't change that thought.
She knew that spirits needed to be believed in for them to be seen. Which also didn't make sense seeing she only found out about some beings on the other side because she saw them. It confused her greatly and made her afraid of her abilities.
But she took courage and looked outside everyday. It wasn't like she could turn it off. She saw beings everyday that people didn't even know existed, or just barely believed in.
It didn't help that Jacklin had to fight night and day to keep her emotions in check. If she didn't she would be in worse shape than her sister. Her outlet for her pent up energy was gone.
Lily did not have the same problem as her. She still had friends who could get her outside to play. However, Jacklin was trapped in the house. Only leaving for Church and to get food and supplies. She was not permitted to play or laugh. Her mother told her that a woman of the house only played with the children if there was not another way to entertain them. Normally that would have been her and Jack tossed outside to play, or when she got older Jack and Lily.
When Jacklin became the woman of the house Jack was her outlet. She scolded him, talked to him, and joined in his games. Disobeying her mother's words, for this was Jack. Her playmate since he was born. Now whenever she tried to join the children in play for an out, she faltered. They did not accept her, she was a grown up, and she was not funny enough for them to be around.
They did not have the same zeal for stories as Jack did when they were younger. All the children seem to want was Jack's old games. Some of which she knew, for she did help him think of some of them after all. But she could not get herself to play them with the children. It hurt too much.
Soon enough she gave up and started staying in the house sewing. She fixed Lily's dresses, her father's clothes, her garments, and, out of habit, Jack's things. When she realized that she was mending his old pair of trousers she stopped, put them down, and walked to their room.
Once there she took a deep breath and walked to the trunk at the end of her bed. Opening it she grabbed the blue cloth in it. She was going to use it for a new coat for Jack but she did not have have time to work on it. But she needed something to do. Why not start it? He would never wear it. But it could be her outlet.
Taking the cloth with her, she felt her heart get heavy. Heavier than normal. But she walked with her head high. She would remain the same strong woman that only broke down once in her adult life. Even if she felt that her world was about to end any moment, she would not show the world her pain.
Yes, stubbornness was in the family. Lily has it by the petals on the dandelion, their mother had it in barrels, their father has a fair amount himself, she has it by the number of water drops in the lake.
And Jackson had it by the snowflake in a blizzard.
If you have read the original and are wondering what happened to Tooth... She actually doesn't exist yet. I know the movie says she was around the Dark Ages, but the actual Tooth Fairy has only been around since the 1900s. I am trying to add some realism to this. Yeah I know, realism in a world where these beings are real. Crazy right?
But still Tooth doesn't exist yet. Sorry.
Anyway! Up next: Another loss in the family.
So Forward!
