Chapter 2

"Rosemarie?" I awoke with a start. Miss Dean had stopped the car. "We're at a rest stop."

"Are we still in Alabama?" I yawned.

"Honey, we've been out of Alabama for a good while now," Miss Dean pulled her keys out of the ignition. "We're in Pennsylvania. You've been sleeping this whole time."

Oh. I climbed out of the car and stretched. My legs felt like jelly and my neck was slightly sore. Pulling my jacket closer around me, I shuffled to the restroom.

After washing my hands, I returned to the car. Miss Dean had started the car and was on the phone. "Hello? May Parker?... Yes, this is Tabitha Dean, the social worker. We've just left Allentown, Pennsylvania... Mm huh, we'll be there in about an hour. Alright, buh-bye. Rosemarie, honey, the snack box is on the floor back there. Oh, and I got you a couple of books."

Pulling the cardboard box onto my lap, I rummaged around. Finally, I selected one of the jumbo backs of chips and a bottle of grape juice. There was also a plastic bag full of my favorite candies with my name written on it on sharpie. Smiling, I took the bag out and sat the box on the cracked vinyl seat.

I flipped through the books Miss Dean had gotten me while I munched on my chips. She had gotten me The Chronicles of Narnia, a big book containing all three Divergent's, and a study Bible (presumbly to replace the one that had been lost in the fire).

Miss Dean had a reputation for giving out gifts to the children in her care; she must have talked to to Mrs. Kendell.

Smiling, I slid the other two into my bag and opened Narnia. Leaning back, I read until Miss Dean's voice interrupted the Reepicheep talking to Eustace.

"Rosemarie? We're here. Just leave your trash inside," Miss Dean climbed out of the car.
