Chapter 2: Release.

It was like everything was moving in slow motion. The sound of my heartbeat thumping echoed in my ears. Sesshomaru's hands found their way to my shoulders, giving me a reassuring squeeze.

"W-what did you just say?"

He cleared his throat, averting his eyes from mine. "A buddy of mine from down at the station called me about an hour ago, he told me she was being released. He dug into her file, she is being released on the account that she has been deemed no longer a threat to society."

"No longer a threat to society?! She tried to kill me! She is supposed to be in prison!"

"Please calm down. You have every right to be upset but fretting over the situation won't do you any good."

"What if she comes after us?" Sesshomaru asked. "We have a daughter. Too many people were lost all those years ago. I'll be damned if my child ends up as another name on their list of victims."

"Again. I understand, but we can't really say for sure that she'll come after you. Maybe she really has changed."

I stood there astonished at how idiotic he sounded. The years he'd spent off the force had made him not only an idiot but soft as well. Pushing past them both, I grabbed the car keys off of the counter.

"Mrs. Taisho until we've found out more about the situation, you shouldn't be going out on your own."

"I, do not care. I am going to get my daughter." I swung open the door. "Sesshomaru, are you coming or not?"

He stood up, grabbing his jacket off the rack. "Let's go."

Normally the drive to Fujisawa would've taken an hour. I made it in half that. The one and only thing on my mind were getting to Kanna. The drive over was quiet, and for that I was thankful. I stopped the car at the front gate; punching in the code. Letting it open slightly, I slipped inside. Running up the driveway, ignoring Sesshomaru's pleas to stop/slow down. I'd made it to the front door, banging on it like a wild woman. A distant "I'm Coming" Could be heard from the other side of the door. The door was swung open.

"Who the hell is- Kagome? What are you doing here so late?"

My eyes darted around the room, searching every dark corner, afraid that Midoriko would jump out at any second, even though I knew she was locked away. I could not stop. I could feel myself slowly losing my mind.

"Where is Kanna?"

"She is asleep upstairs. Has something happened?"

"They're letting Midoriko go." I spat.

I didn't need to say anything else, the look on his face showed that he was just as nervous as I was. Strange, how the name of one woman could make us react this way. He stepped aside, allowing me to pass. I ran up the stairs; straight to the guest room, hoping Kanna was there. Pushing open the door, I flipped the light switch on. Seeing her small form curled up under her favorite blanket. Her platinum tresses messily spread out on her pillow. I let out a deep breath I didn't even know I was holding in. Slipping off my shoes, I gingerly laid next to her, holding her close. Seconds later Sesshomaru appeared in the doorway.

"Kagome... are you alright?"

"Look at me Sesshomaru, I'm a paranoid mess, and she hasn't even been released yet. How can someone have this much power over me?"

"They can only have power over you if you let them."

I bit back my tears. "I... I don't know how to get past this. Seven long years and just the mere mention of their names can reduce me to this."

He too kicked off his shoes, getting into the bed. Placing a soft kiss atop of my head.

"It's alright Kagome. I'm here; I won't let anything happen to you, not this time, not ever. Just rest, tomorrow is another day."

I took his advice, knowing I needed it.

"Maybe tomorrow would be better."

"Hn."

The annoying sound of birds chirping woke me up. I stretched out my limbs, feeling around for Kanna and Sesshomaru, but they weren't there. I jumped out of the bed, running towards the stairs nearly tripping over my shoes.

"Mama!"

"Kanna!" I yelled Scooping her up in my arms.

"What's the matter, mama?"

"I woke up and you weren't there. I just got scared is all."

She grabbed my cheeks kissing my nose. "Next time daddy and I will bring you with us. We came down here real early because daddy and I wanted to make you breakfast."

"Well aren't you two just the sweetest," I said kissing her back.

"Where's your grandpa?"

"He said he had to go to work early today," she said.

I ran my fingers through her disheveled hair. "I see, come on, let's go watch some T.V so daddy can finish cooking."

We got cozy, snuggling up on the couch I grabbed the remote turning the television on. I regretted doing so when I saw what was on.

"Hello Japan this is Matsuhara Junko, thank you for tuning into NNK World Live, we have breaking news this morning. Midoriko Eno has just been released only hours ago. On the anniversary of her brother/lover's death. After having a mental breakdown in prison, she was moved to Tokyo's Metropolitan Matsuzawa mental hospital in Setagaya. Our source tells us, she's been released on a count of good behavior. Apparently, she has been deemed no longer a danger to society. Eno will be kept under constant surveillance for the next year; to make sure she keeps to the terms of her probation. That is all, we'll keep you updated, this is Matsuhara Junko signing off."

I looked over to Sesshomaru, locking eyes with him.

"So much for a better tomorrow."

I hope you enjoyed it.
