Chapter 2 - The Struggle Of Conversation

It was Wednesday 10:28am so as usual Laura was waiting at the schools office for her Dad to pick her up at 10:30am it was Laura's normal Wednesday routine. She'd go see Dr Williams for her weekly therapy session and talk about her week. Like clockwork at 10:30am her dad walked through the doors and took Laura to the car. Laura's dad was also only allowed minimal physical contact with her. It was difficult for both Laura and her dad but it became easier for her dad over the 14 years Laura had been alive.

In a typical car journey, Laura sat in silence and always asked her dad to keep the radio silent. If her dad wanted to listen to the radio he would have to warn her and keep the volume on a low even number (Laura hated odd numbers and prime numbers). When they reached the clinic her dad checked her in at the front desk and Laura would take a seat in the corner closest to Dr. Williams office. Laura waits 10 minutes for her appointment at 11:10am, the time she spent waiting she went over her week.

Eventually Laura was invited into Dr. Williams office and began to discus her week, she began with last Wednesday.

"So Laura let's start with last Wednesday what happened"

"Last Wednesday, was like ever Wednesday I had: English, Math, Chemistry, Physics, Econ and finally I had biology. We had to work in pairs and I wasn't aloud to work in a three with Laf and Perry, so Mrs Martin made me work with a girl named Danny. She wasn't new I seen around school a few times before but we never interacted through speech, I mean I've seen her in gym a couple of times as well but I barely ever gave her a thought."

"Ok, do what was so important about this Danny?"

"So before she could work with me Mrs Martin had to warn her of my autism and OCD it's normal to me so I didn't feel weird but I feel like I may as well wear a sign"

"Is that what you think? That you feel everyone has to be warned about you, in order to treat you in the right manner?"

"Yes. Danny came over quickly and said "hey, so I know you don't like physical contact or to talk, so if you don't wanna talk you can write down what you wanna talk to me. I just want you to be comfortable working with me." Danny made feel safe and she wanted to treat me right"

"So how did that make you feel?"

"Happy"

"And why did you feel happy?"

"Because Danny wanted me to feel comfortable around her, not many people do"

"Good, so what about the rest of your week?"

"My normal week to routine but then when it came around to Monday third period there was a new girl in my class Carmilla Karnstein and when she got to the her seat at the back next to me and 30 minutes into the lesson the fire alarm went off. That then made me go into panic mode onto the floor rocking back and forth counting in 2's. Laf said Carmilla wanted to help but told not to because they knew I'd probably freak"

"so this Carmila do you think she cares about you?"

"Yeah, it seemed like she genuinely cared about my Well being, it made me happy"

"So maybe you have two new friends in the work?"

"Yeah...maybe"
