"--James!"
"What?" I jerked, hissing.
Victoria pulled back her hand, her eyes flaring. "I asked you where we're going next. Three times."
I shook myself, throwing a glare at her. I got distracted for one moment and she felt it necessary to shake me. Inhaling, I detected every scent in the forest: there was pine tree, spruce, soil, squirrel, deer--
There. That heavy smell that permeated its surroundings, the one I hadn't been able to drive out of my head for decades. The smell of human was so irresistable. "She's this way," I said, speeding off in the direction of the scent.
"About time," muttered Victoria.
Why did I even keep her around? I wondered. It wasn't as if I had been debilitated without her, her unique talent just made hunting less dangerous. Victoria could be a bit of a nuissance when she was irritable. But she served her purpose well, so I didn't really have any cause to complain.
"Mmmm," I caught the smell strongly, "she's heading into town. Smart girl, no wonder she's an honor student."
"She isn't smart enough to elude us," said Victoria in a confident tone, apparently over her miffed attitude five seconds earlier.
"Poor Hannah," I sighed. "You can run, but not for long." Running, one thing humans never excelled at. No one had escaped me by running, although they all tried.
Everyone tried, except for one girl.
