The moments before his acknowledgement--true acknowledgement--are incoherent, frenetic, confusing. Everything, carefully coordinated, courtesy of the fifth Hokage, is calculated, accidents caused by a nervous, elated blond had to be taken into account, tripping over robes, stumbling, fumbling over all that is tangible, intangible. Despite all their not-unfounded worries, he stands and speaks and everything is as close to perfect as if possibly could have been, and he breathes a sigh of relief, exhausted, dizzy from anxiety and joy.
His keeper stands near him, all muscle behind his icy-cold exterior, and grips his elbow when he slumps after stepping off the stage. He smiles up at the man, his senior by a few short months, laughing his apologies. They walk to his new office, arm in arm, and when he's pushed up against the wall, tired as he is, he receives Sasuke's congratulations whole-heartedly.
A/N: Second drabble for the sasunaru100 community. After that, the plot bunnies kind of mutated into full blown fic monsters!
