Phase 2: The Garden of Peace
Secret Colony Izanami
A day later, 7:23 AM
Kotori, her daughter, and Kaede were the only ones to remain impassive as they stared at the salvage before them. This was by virtue of their upbringing, but on the inside, they were gaping in awe just as much as the rest of the colonists.
It was a wreck, to be sure. In fact, the large piece of salvage was hardly recognizable for what it had once been, lacking its wings, head, right arm and leg, and left railgun. But there was no doubt about it. The Midgard had recovered the ultimate piece of salvage.
The remnants of the greatest weapon the world knew, in the opinion of the Tsukireis. The ZGMF-X10A Freedom.
While presumably inferior to the ZGMF-X13A Providence, and certainly lacking the mindless destructive power of GENESIS and nuclear warheads, the Freedom was a weapon of a very different nature. It stood for all that it had been meant to stand for, and perhaps somewhat ironically, it had stood for this against the man who'd ordered its creation.
For the Freedom stood for just what its name implied. It was a guardian angel, wielding power meant for no mortal and the wisdom to use that power well and not be corrupted by it. The wisdom to wield the power rather than be wielded by it.
Of course, that was all tied into the pilot as well. The enigma behind what was quickly becoming a legend. Aside from Lacus Clyne and the Eternal, there was no one and no thing more sought after than the pilot of the Freedom and his machine.
Kotori shook her head, trying to clear it of her awe.
"Kawanari!" she called out, eyes centering on Izanami's chief mechanic as he snapped out of his stupor and ran over to her.
"Yes ma'am?" he said. Kotori eyed him for a moment before turning back to the Freedom.
"I trust you'll treat this artifact with the utmost respect," she said. "Dissect the entire thing. Just make sure you can put it back together in the same condition it's in now. Or possibly even rebuild it."
Setsuna rolled her eyes slightly as Kawanari's eyes lit up like a child's on Christmas morning and he ran off to get to work.
"What would we do with a rebuilt Freedom?" she asked. "We couldn't use it without overexposing ourselves."
"A monument, or even something to discreetly deliver to Cagalli Yula Athha," said Kotori. "She's probably our best means of getting it to Lacus Clyne and its pilot."
"I suppose," said Kaede mildly.
"And what about you? Any progress with Akira?" asked Setsuna, smiling at her best friend. Kaede shook her head somewhat sadly.
"No," she admitted. For her, that was certainly difficult. There wasn't a system she couldn't crack, given enough time. "But, at the very least, this would be a good place to make a new start."
"I'd agree with you if I didn't think he had someone waiting for him," said Kotori. "Don't forget about that ring of his."
"Yeah," murmured Setsuna before she turned away from the remains of the Freedom. "I'm gonna go see him. He should be ready to leave the hospital soon."
"I'll go with you," said Kaede. "It's the least I can do for fai—"
"Oh no you don't," said Kotori, snapping a hand onto Kaede's ear.
"Ow!"
"I need you to help with cataloguing everything else we salvaged," said Kotori. "I recall reports on some parts from prototype machines, and we need your talent for that little lady."
Kaede groaned. Aside from the fact that Setsuna always left for them, this is what she hated most about salvage missions.
Setsuna chuckled when an idea struck her.
"Hey, Misuumi!" she called out to another of her friends. "I'm going down to see Akira! You wanna come?"
"Yes!" said Misuumi excitedly, sprinting over to them. "I can't wait to see what he'll do when he finds out I was the one who rescued him!"
Setsuna rolled her eyes again as she continued away from the salvage yard with the heterochromic blonde at her side, wondering idly when the girl would decide a change was in order.

Hospital, a few minutes later
"Good morning Akira," came a soft female voice as Akira was staring out the window of his hospital room. He looked around to see two girls walking towards him.
The one in the lead was a few inches taller than Akira himself, with knee-length chocolate brown hair and emerald green eyes that could only be described as beautiful. Her features were soft, but she carried herself with the air of a powerful noble.
The girl behind her was a sharp contrast to the first. She was about Akira's height, maybe a centimeter or two shorter, with blonde hair that hung to her shoulder blades. Her features were playful, as was her visible green right eye. Her bangs covered her left eye entirely. She carried herself somewhat playfully, but Akira instinctively knew that she could become more dangerous than any mass-murderer in an instant. His initial impression pegged her as the more dangerous of the two.
"Good morning," said Akira, pausing slightly.
"Ah, right," said the brunette. "My name is Setsuna Tsukirei. I'm Kotori's daughter. My friend here is Misuumi Kamakura. Just think of her as a stereotypical blonde, if you remember what that is, and ignore her until she shifts her bangs to cover her other eye. At that point, I advise you to run like the dogs of hell are at your heels, because they probably are, and running from the same thing I might add."
"Urusai!" shouted Misuumi angrily, shaking her fists in the air in an almost comedic and very childish action.
Akira watched all of this with mild amusement in his eyes, and he figured he'd take Setsuna's advice wholeheartedly should the time to do so ever come.
"Anyways, Akira, I'm here to bust you out of this dreadful room and give you a grand tour," said Setsuna, smiling at him. Akira returned the smile, nodding. "I managed to get some clothes in your approximate size. Their second-hand, unfortunately, but they should do until we can get some new ones for you."
"Thanks," said Akira, seeing the pile of clothes on the table. It occurred to him, somewhat absently, that this hospital room was built more like a bedroom.
"We'll leave so that you can get changed," said Setsuna.
MIYUKI - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny – MIYUKI
A few minutes later, Akira stepped out of the hospital room to find Setsuna and Misuumi waiting for him. Setsuna gave him a small smile while Misuumi was practically beaming at him as the two led him out of the hospital.
When they stepped through the doors, the sight of just what Izanami truly was greeted them.
"Welcome to the Garden of Peace," said Setsuna. "Izanami. It's a small-scale PLANT, only about a fifth the size of the actual PLANTs, six kilometers tall and two kilometers wide at each base, but its still home, and has all the capabilities of a true PLANT."
Akira frowned. He vaguely recalled what a PLANT was—a large, hourglass shaped colony. Well, it was certainly a worthwhile investment—Izanami was beautiful.
"You probably don't remember, but the PLANTs are known for their ability to reproduce lush natural environments," continued Setsuna. "Izanami is proof of that. Hmmm, I suppose we should do what we can to catch you up on what things are like. Follow me."
"Say, Akira," said Misuumi cheerfully. "Can I get a thank you kiss for rescuing you?"
Akira blinked while Setsuna groaned.
"What, your cousins affection not enough for you?" she asked, shuddering internally as she referred to her personal nightmare.
Misuumi's response was to start pouting. "They're so much more intent on each other," she complained. "I'm feeling deprived!"
"You've only got your pick from virtually every male on this colony!" said Setsuna, rolling her eyes. "As I recall, your preferences don't reside with the finer sex."
"But none of the guys here measure up to my cousins! Akira though…" Misuumi blushed prettily, and Akira himself blushed slightly in embarrassment. Setsuna sighed, pulling a cell phone out of her pocket.
"That's it!" she said. "I'm calling the Aratas."
"No! Minako will want Akira for himself!" said Misuumi, rushing forward to try and grab the phone, only to be tripped up by somebody's leg.
"Hello? Naomi?" said Setsuna. "Could I borrow your daughters for a little while? Misuumi's all-over the new guy. Uh-huh. Yeah, we're by the hospital. Okay, thanks." Setsuna hung up the cell phone and turned smirking to the pouting Misuumi. "They're on their way."
"Dang it!" said Misuumi, glaring at the person who'd tripped her. "Damn you!"
"Thanks, Miyuki," said Setsuna, turning to Akira. "Akira, allow me to introduce you. This is Miyuki Inoue."
Miyuki smiled and bowed in greeting to Akira. Somewhat instinctively, Akira did the same, looking Miyuki over.
She was young, a little younger than him, in fact. But there was something about her that spoke of hidden maturity. She was about his height, with long, light brown hair that fell to her hips and big, soulful blue eyes. She wore what seemed to be a custom-made pink kimono, arm warmers on her wrists, a medallion set with a large blue sapphire the color of her eyes, and a sheathed sword was on her hip.
Akira couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at that part.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Iyadomi," said Miyuki politely.
"Um, just Akira is fine," replied Akira. Miyuki smiled.
"Very well, but you have to call me Miyuki as well, okay?" she said. Akira smiled slightly and nodded.
"Hey! No flirting with him!" said Misuumi, who was being held back from launching herself at Miyuki by Setsuna.
"They're not flirting!" said Setsuna. "And if you get into a fight with Miyuki, you know it will end badly for you, especially since she's carrying her real sword with her today!"
"Are they always like this?" asked Akira. Miyuki giggled slightly in the back of her throat.
"More or less," she said. "But Mako and Makoto have a way of… 'cowing' them, shall we say." Akira looked at Miyuki curiously. "You'll see."
Over the course of the next several minutes, the struggle between Setsuna and Misuumi degraded into an outright catfight, Setsuna's air of nobility completely gone as the two girls bit, clawed (or otherwise scratched), wrestled (Misuumi groping Setsuna once or twice), hurled insults at each other that could make the average person vomit, and in general struggled for dominance.
Fortunately, it only took about this long for relief to arrive on a trio of motorcycles. The catfighting girls froze as they realized that trouble had arrived.
"Ah, you finally showed!" said Miyuki as the riders, all three clearly female, clambered off their bikes and walked over, removing their helmets. Akira blinked, realizing that two of them were twins, despite having practically polar opposite attire.
"Alright, let me introduce you, Akira," said Miyuki. "The brunette is Minako Arata, the oldest sister. The twins are Makoto Michiru Arata—the one with long hair and modest dress—and Makoto Haruka Arata. We call them by their middle names."
"With you as an exception," said Haruka, smiling playfully as she shrugged and sighed. "It's always Mako and Makoto with you, though you never explained which of us is which."
"That's because I switch it almost daily," said Miyuki as Michiru led her twin over to where Setsuna and Misuumi still lay on the ground, their clothes in an utter state of disarray. Akira raised an eyebrow, noticing the manner in which Michiru was holding Haruka.
Minako smirked. "Watch this," she said. "It's quite the show."
"Can we join in?" said the twins simultaneously, and very flirtatiously. Setsuna and Misuumi started to back away from the two. "It's no fair, you two playing without us!"
"No! I'm begging you!" said Setsuna, raising a hand and shaking it fearfully, as though to ward off whatever was coming.
"Ne, Haruka-chan! They're so mean," said Michiru, turning to her twin and pouting. "You'll never be that mean to me, will you?"
"Of course not, Michiru," said Haruka, looking at Michiru softly and adoringly. Akira stared incredulously at Miyuki and Minako as the twins held and stared at each other in an unmistakably suggestive manner and openly flirted with one another.
After several minutes of this, along with some kissing on the cheeks and a hickey on Michiru's neck, the two turned to Setsuna and Misuumi, and leapt on them, Haruka on Setsuna and Michiru on Misuumi, pressing their not-inconsiderable busts into the busts of the other girls. They stared into the eyes of the two with unmistakable lust and spoke in unison.
"You two can join us! We'd love the company!"
At this point, it apparently became too much for the poor girls, who promptly passed out. The twins immediately released them and started clutching their stomachs as they threatened to fall over from the sheer force of their laughter.
"You know, I can never tell if our victims are turned on or frightened," said Miyuki mildly. "Even knowing that it's all an act, they always react the same. Well, them and everyone else."
"You mean 'everyone else but you'," said Minako. "No one's figured out how, but the one time my sisters managed to corner Miyuki and turn their 'incestuous lesbian love act' on her, she somehow managed to make them pass out."
"What was that?" asked Akira, eyeing the twins as they finally lost the battle with gravity and fell to the ground laughing.
"Just one of the acts those two like to play," said Minako, sighing. "Individually, they're actually relatively normal. A bit eccentric, sure, but that's the mark of an individual. But together… well, this is the nightmare that they become. Alright, run along children, I'll clean up the mess here."
Minako ushered the two away before turning to her sisters, cousin, and the colony's 'princess'. Miyuki shook her head and turned to Akira.
"So, before all of that, what was Setsuna planning for you?" she asked, already knowing what Misuumi would've had in mind (tease that she was).
"Um… I think she said the grand tour," answered Akira, shaking off the events that had just transpired. Miyuki nodded.
"Alright, I guess that means I'll have to show you around," she said. "Let's go."
MIYUKI - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny – MIYUKI
Miyuki's house
8:52 pm
"And finally, we have my house," said Miyuki pleasantly as she stopped in front of a modest, two story house. "So, what do you think of our Garden?"
"It's wonderful," said Akira, smiling. He rather liked Miyuki. During the tour, he'd found that he rather enjoyed her company. She was an undeniably fun person to be around.
"Say, since your recovery is complete, would you like to stay here?" asked Miyuki. "I live by myself, so it gets kind of lonely at times."
Akira was caught off-guard. She hardly knew him, yet she was making an offer like this? She was extending this sort of trust to him?
Then again, truthfully, Akira didn't even know himself that well.
After a few minutes to consider it, Akira smiled and nodded.
"Sure," he said. "I'd like that."
MIYUKI - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny – MIYUKI
Several days later
2:35 pm
"So… why are we doing this again?" asked Akira, manipulating the controls of the Strike Dagger, maneuvering the machine with an almost instinctive ability over the large asteroid outside Izanami. There was something very familiar about this machine.
"Because you can't freeload forever, Akira-kun," said Misuumi cheerfully, maneuvering her GuAIZ about like she was trying to get it to dance. Akira shook his head, knowing that the mild flirtatious tone in her last sentence was an improvement over the sometimes downright sexual advances he'd been getting from her for the last week. "Of course, there's always the alternative…" Okay, so maybe there wasn't much improvement.
"Not happening," said Akira.
"How can you keep refusing me?!" demanded Misuumi. "Darn it, did Miyuki already get to you?! Do I have to convince her that a threesome is okay?!"
"Urusai," said Miyuki tiredly, her patched-together M1 maneuvering with grace. Interestingly, the shield was mounted on the right arm and the rifle held in the left hand. "Akira and I have no such relationship, yariman."
"Don't call me a slut!"
"But it's true!" said the third pilot, another girl whom Akira had only met briefly before they boarded their respective machines. Her name was Natsuki Arakawa, if Akira recalled correctly, and she was piloting a more advanced form of the Strike Dagger, a GAT-01A1 '105' Dagger.
Akira shook his head, still trying to wrap his mind around the dynamic that was the family of the Izanami colonists. Several times more, he'd seen Michiru and Haruka work their 'incestuous charms' on people, generally women, all of whom had apparently succumbed to the charms in some way and promptly passed out. Misuumi, meanwhile, was called a flirtatious tease, but to her face, people generally went to the next level and called her a slut, prompting an angry and frustrated reaction from her, though she had a tendency of proving the insult at least somewhat appropriate. Minako, it seemed, was a romantic at heart, and tried to play matchmaker, accompanied by the proclamation that she was the 'goddess of love' (Miyuki was of the opinion that she'd seen too many episodes of a centuries old anime called Sailor Moon). Her favorite targets, for the moment, were apparently Miyuki and Akira themselves, not that she'd had any success.
Other people of interest included Kawanari Akita, the chief mechanic, who'd all but demanded Akira be assigned to work under him when they discovered Akira's talent for mechanics. Another was Kaede Shigemitsu, who'd proclaimed undying love for Akira when he proved himself at least as competent a hacker as she herself was, and possibly even better (Akira was uncertain how serious she was, though Setsuna seemed to believe she was dead serious). Akira had also been surprised to realize that the balance of Izanami's population was about one male for every two-and-a-half females—which may have contributed to Misuumi's apparent desire to land herself a good boyfriend.
Izanami was also divided into branches in which people worked and contributed to the community. Hacking and scavenging was the lifeblood of the colony, so skills with computers and piloting were generally considered to be invaluable. The other major branches were agriculture and mechanical talent. Akira had proven himself easily enough in the fields of mechanics and computers, and wasn't bad with agriculture. This left a test to see how he did in their most important branch, for not only were pilots expected to scavenge, but to defend against any attacks that might one day befall the colony, despite their best efforts to remain hidden.
"Alright, cut the chatter," said Nanami, playing referee for the group since her ship was docked. "Now remember, this is a standard training exercise. All equipment has been set to harmless training mode, and the losers… well, I don't think I'll go into that." Misuumi and Natsuki groaned.
"What?" asked Akira, curiously.
"The losers have kitchen, latrine, and hallway clean-up duty next time we head out," explained Miyuki. "All the way out and back in, and without even the fun of flying out to scavenge."
Akira shuddered.
"That's so mean, Nanami!" complained Misuumi. "This is Akira's first time, how well can he be expected to perform? And you know that not many can beat Miyuki under the rules of the training exercises!"
"Of course," said Nanami. "That doesn't change the rules. Now get started!"
The words had barely been spoken before Miyuki's Astray suddenly spun about, firing its rifle wildly. The others pulled away, dodging the beams and blocking with their shields. Akira was stunned by the ease with which he accomplished this, and it caught the rest of the mock-battlers off-guard as well.
"Okay, if Akira can continue showing that sort of thing off, then we're in real trouble Natsuki," said Misuumi, firing at the Astray. Miyuki deftly evaded the attack before returning fire, wildly once more. Akira noted this, and realized something.
Miyuki was no marksman.
Suddenly, the 105 Dagger appeared before Akira, swinging a beam saber at him. Akira raised his shield, catching the saber, then lashed out with his Strike Dagger's foot, kicking Natsuki's machine in the head and sending it tumbling back. He aimed and fired his rifle, but Natsuki grabbed a rock floating near her machine and threw it into the path of the beam, causing it to take the hit instead while the 105 Dagger vanished behind an asteroid.
Misuumi fired on Miyuki, but all she hit was the rifle sent spinning her way. In that time, Miyuki's Astray vanished, only to emerge from a canyon in the asteroid, swinging a beam saber, the shield now shifted to the left arm so the saber could be wielded in the left hand. Misuumi activated her GuAIZs beam claws and blocked the swing, but her rifle was kicked from her hand, the Astray spinning and wrapping its legs over the GuAIZs left arm, locking it in place as the saber hit the torso several times in rapid succession.
Akira dodged fire from the 105 Dagger, returning fire to the general area from which it had come.
"How long are we gonna do this?" asked Akira, exchanging fire with Natsuki.
"Not long," said Natsuki. "Only until Miyuki finishes with Misuumi and decides to come after… never mind."
The 105 Dagger emerged from the asteroid, dodging fire from a GuAIZ rifle held in the left hand of the Astray. Natsuki returned fire, and Akira noted that she was more accurate than Miyuki. However, the Astray was more agile, and it was apparent that Miyuki was very good at evasion.
Akira fired, several times in rapid succession, driven by instinct, hitting the limbs and head of the 105 Dagger and knocking the rifle from its hands. A message confirmed this as a 'kill', as Miyuki flew towards him, rifle blazing.
Akira skillfully evaded the fire, something he found surprisingly easy, and returned fire. Most of the shots missed, coming precariously close to the Astray regardless, but one shot knocked the rifle from its hands. The Astray's shield moved in front of it as Akira fired, his latest shot hitting the shield… but behind the shield was nothing as it went tumbling away.
Shocked, Akira looked up as the Astray flew towards him, both its sabers in hand. He fired, but the Astray spun about, its sabers cutting and deflecting the beams with shocking precision.
Miyuki reached the Strike Dagger and swung, knocking the rifle free with her right saber, spinning about to attack the Dagger directly with her left saber. Akira raised his shield, but was still knocked back.
Feeling like he'd done this before, Akira activated his machine's thrusters, preventing a collision with the asteroid, and landed his machine on its feet as the Astray pursued. Akira pushed aside one saber with his shield, dodged the other, and drew his own beam saber, swinging it at the M1. Miyuki dodged back, avoiding being hit.
"This is my range, Akira," said Miyuki, wielding the sabers before her. The Astray charged in with reckless abandon. Akira deflected with his shield and saber, but the thrust of the Astray was too great, pushing him back.
Suddenly, Miyuki released her weapons and pushed her machine forward, past Akira's shield and saber, and grabbed the Strike Dagger's head with her Astray's legs.
She immediately pushed the thrusters to full, and flipped over backwards, dragging the Strike Dagger with her and crashing it against the asteroid, causing the mobile suit to lose the grip on its weapons.
Miyuki promptly retrieved her own weapons and put one saber tip next to the Strike Dagger's cockpit.
"You're good," she complimented. She sounded slightly out of breath as well. "I haven't had to win by performing maneuvers like that in a long time."
"That was…" said Akira, stunned. Miyuki fought unconventionally, to say the least.
"I'm impressed, Akira," said Natsuki, floating towards them with some of the dropped weapons while Misuumi retrieved the rest. "Your first time and you pushed Miyuki. That's not half-bad, even if she isn't out top pilot and especially when you consider the fact that she had the superior suit."
"Who's the top?" asked Akira curiously, standing his machine back up and accepting back the weapons of his suit.
"The twins," said Nanami, sounding extremely pleased. The others groaned, catching Akira off-guard, but Natsuki simply pointed towards the colony. Akira looked that direction and blinked in surprise.
"A… a Proto GINN and a Moebius?" he questioned.
"We're screwed," groaned Misuumi.
MIYUKI - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny – MIYUKI
11:31 pm
Kotori chuckled lightly, watching once again the footage of Haruka and Michiru taking down Misuumi and Natsuki in their Proto GINN and Moebius. Akira and Miyuki proved more persistent, but Miyuki didn't seem to be able to beat Michiru in melee combat, even though Michiru was flying a Moebius that mounted unmoving blades. Akira had fallen to Haruka's Proto GINN, and now, all four of the losers would carry the worst and most boring tasks on any mission.
Shaking her head lightly, Kotori turned off the footage and turned to Kaede and Kawanari.
"So, what brings you two here?" asked Kotori. "I'd expected you to still be working on the Freedom."
"That's what we're here about," said Kawanari. "We're about to begin the… 'dissection'…" The way Kawanari said it made it apparent that, eager as he was to explore the secrets of the legendary mobile suit, he was also reluctant to touch it. It was almost as though he saw the mobile suit as a god.
"We wanted Akira's help," explained Kaede. "Especially if we plan on searching for additional data to explore the idea of rebuilding and upgrading it. Not to mention the OS is proving rather difficult to access."
"I see," said Kotori. "Very well then. We'll ask Akira for his opinion tomorrow. He does quite well in those mobile suits. We did notice that his performance with the Strike Dagger, Dagger, and Astrays were considerably higher than his performance in the ZAFT machines."
"I heard something about that from Setsuna," said Kaede.
"Hmmm, that is pretty interesting," said Kawanari. "You know, I looked things over. The cockpit of the Earth Forces and Orb produced machines are pretty different from the ZAFT machines, and the Freedom's cockpit seems to be something of a composite of the two."
"Oh? Well that's interesting," said Kotori, before shaking her head. "In any case, you two should get some rest if you're not planning on continuing serious work till we know whether Akira would like to help or not."
Author's Notes: Ah, now this is nice. Much improved over the previous chapter, I think, as only a few aspects of the original remain, such as the plans for the Freedom, the mobile suit training, and the consequence of losing (though that's revised slightly to keep with the differences between Izanami and Mathilde). I also have cameos of characters from Gundam SEED Dauntless and MS Saga: Gundam Legacy. Makoto Michiru Arata is the one from Gundam SEED Dauntless, while Makoto Haruka Arata is the one from MS Saga. The whole "incestuous lovers" is a joke between them inspired somewhat by the twins in Ouran High School Host Club. It's a real irritant for Setsuna, though whether that's because she thinks it's hot or she's simply frightened by it is up to debate.
I'm sure everyone noticed the change in the "scene breaks". This is going to be a continuing trend, where I put in the name of a character that plays a role that could be called "significant" in the chapter. So, some might have LACUS put there, or CAGALLI, or even FREEDOM outright, since it's effectively a character in this story as well (and in a way, the titular one as well). I have various plans of my own for the future of this story, but I'm still hammering out some of the concrete details, so I'm not sure when the next update will be. In any case, I thought everyone deserved this.
Please review everyone. And now, for some information I'm sure you're all eager for (PS: yes, the class name of the last ship in the list was intentional).
