A/N: Hurray, reviews! Massive thank you to chimpy888, cursedstarlight, Doctor'sLittleDalek and Glena for my amazing reviews, this chapter is for you! J
(I have written the disclaimer on the first chapter)
"They were books about you Alex."
"What?" Alex was thoroughly confused. Mrs. Jones sighed,
"it's exactly what it sounds like Alex, books about your life so far, nine altogether. Now we need to find all the people and organize what we do next…" She trailed off, lost in her train of thought.
"Hang on a second," said Alex, feeling a twinge of anger at the lack of control he had. "Nine? But I've only done eight missions. How can there be nine?"
Then Blunt continued as if the interruption hadn't happened.
"However, the books are unable to be opened unless a scanned fingerprint of all the people listed are pressed onto a keypad at once."
"This is very advanced technology my boy, which I've been developing at the moment but I'm not there yet," said Smithers seriously. Despite everything, Alex half-smiled and turned to his favourite person in MI6.
"Well Smithers, turns out you're not the best gadget man in the world, better start working fast to try and catch up."
Smithers frowned and replied,
"Alex, you don't understand. I am the only person working on this level of technology, and I recognize many of the mechanisms to be my own, when I know that nobody else has ever come close to developing ideas such as these. We have also found levels of radiation coming from the box it came in."
"What does that mean?" asked Alex, who had a feeling it was nothing good.
After a short, meaningful pause, Smithers replied.
"Nine books despite having only completed eight missions, advanced technology well past anything I have ever seen before, high levels of radiation with no explanation. We think they came from the future."
Alex gave a staccato, humorless laugh.
"You cannot be serious!"
But Blunt's face showed no sign of amusement.
"I can assure you Alex that we are being perfectly serious. We have received these books and a list of people to read them from the future. There is no possibility of any other origin. Now we must gather together all who will read the books, there is no time to waste."
….
The room he was in wasn't big enough for the twenty or so people squashed inside, a large oversight on Alan Blunt's part. Most of the people were stood around, whispering, afraid of what was about to happen. Like him on so many missions, the guests had been kept in the dark and many were not pleased about this little fact. Everybody here so far Alex had recognized immediately, but there were some people that he wasn't too pleased to see.
The first people to catch his eye were muscular, intimidating. The three members of K Unit stood on the opposite side of the room, talking in low voices to each other. For some reason, this amused Alex, the protectors of the country afraid of talking to a couple of new people!
Next to them stood Blunt and Mrs. Jones, not talking, just surveying the scene. As her eyes flicked from person to person, she caught Alex's eye, and nodded towards him. Alex turned away, ignoring her. His two best friends, Tom and Sabina, were standing to the side of him. They were having a friendly debate, their word for an argument, about who was the best Doctor.
He caught part of their conversation,
"… He just was The Doctor. Matt Smith just took to the part perfectly."
"I'm sorry Tom, but you're wrong. David Tennant is just the best actor the world has ever seen. Have you seen the interaction between him and Olivia Coleman in Broadchurch? Stunning." He smiled at how obsessed they were. Personally, he had never enjoyed Doctor Who as much as Sherlock, as he loved the mystery to it and how utterly interlocked all the plots were. *
Jack and the older Pleasures were having a conversation at the back of the room. They seemed to be getting on well, all of them were smiling and laughing at different intervals.
Then there were then teachers, and even a couple of students from the school. James Hale was among them, and he looked serious, wearing smart clothes unlike Tom, who was just in jeans. Internally groaning, Alex also saw Bruce, a short ugly boy who made his school life hell. What imbecile had written this list, and what on earth had convinced them to put Bruce Hecket on it? The teachers all looked worried, and Alex wondered what they had been told. What had been said to make them come here?
However, one person, a European with short black hair and dark, thoughtful eyes seemed carefree, his square features relaxed. As his eyes scanned the room they stopped at Alex, and lit up with recognition. He strode across the room, managing to avoid the heavy congestion effortlessly.
"Hello trouble." Alex rose his eyebrows at the agent he had last seen shooting his godfather. Ben spoke again, frustrated.
"I don't suppose you know what's going on Alex, they haven't told me anything."
Alex took a step towards Ben as if to tell him something important, then dropped his voice into a low American gangster tone and said,
"I'm afraid that's classified."
Ben rolled his eyes.
"Always so mature." Then he smiled, "I'm sure this is entirely centered around you kid, I've heard about at least ten world scandals this year and you know what? I' m pretty confident that you've been at the bottom of at least half of them. Were you?" Ben stared at him waiting for an answer.
"You'll never know," Alex assured him. Then before he could be interrogated more he said,
"You'd better get back to your seat, it's about to start." Ben winked at him, then sat down as the room fell to a deathly silent. Just before Blunt started to talk, Alex noticed that there were three empty seats around the large oak table. Did this mean that they wouldn't be able to read the books now? Somehow he didn't think so. MI6 had this totally under control. They always did.
A/N: I promise they will start reading next chapter! Is there anybody I have missed out who should listen to the reading? Again, a massive thanks to all who reviewed, it means the world! Will update soon, ColourPages. :-D
*I agree with Tom that Matt Smith was the best doctor, but love Tennant in Broadchurch!
