Hi again! So, I want your opinion. Does my first person writing sound unnatural? I'm so used to writing fanfiction in third person but normally do other writing in first person… but when I tried to write fanfiction with first person POV, I kept catching myself shifting back into third person POV. Should I switch to third person throughout or keep it at first person and switch between character POVs? Also, just a heads up, this is an Amuto Fanfic. (Just didn't want anyone to be upset when they found out. Although, I'm definitely not a Tadamu fan…)
Inside Out: Chapter 2- Speech Gone Wrong?
Nagihiko's POV
I was busy lecturing the guys on principles again. How agitating. To think they would not only pick a fight with a girl years younger than them, but also keep trying to injure her after she'd proven to have been better them. What idiots. We might be mafia members, but we weren't barbarians. We accepted a fight when it came to us reasonably and knew when to back down.
"This will not happen again," I chastised a final time as they bowed their heads in apology and agreement. I nodded and then dismissed them.
"Young Master?" I smiled as a small girl peaked into the doorway after the guys had left. "Isn't today your first day of school?"
I turned to her and replied, "Nah, you go on without me, Nadeshiko. I hear after freshman year, the first day is the same as before."
"But weren't you the sophomore representative this year?" My twin inquired, tilting her head to the side.
"Yeah, but Saaya wouldn't stop bothering me about wanting to do it, and I didn't want to do it anyway," I admitted. My twin nodded and said her goodbyes, leaving in a private car that I had gotten for her first day. The driver opened the door for her, and she got in, waving one last time before rolling the window back up and disappearing around the corner.
"Good luck sis," I mumbled before going back inside of the building to take a long, well deserved nap.
Amu's POV
(Where I left off in the last chapter)
My palms started sweating. As much as my outer self hated to admit it: I was nervous. I had no idea what I was going to say now and was staring down at the entire school. Luckily, most of them seemed uninterested.
Then, my outer self bristled. They weren't paying attention to me. Soon they'd be ignoring my and spreading rumors behind my back that made no sense whatsoever. I was not going to let this happen.
"Ahem," I cleared my throat in the mic. That got the attention of a couple people, but most still seamed disinterested. Fine, so that's how you want to play it.
I took the mic off the stand, and at first people didn't notice. Finally, murmurs spread through the crowd, people wondering what I was doing. If only I actually knew what I was doing. I hadn't thought this through.
I smiled and walked up near the edge of the stage, looking at the crowd and started to speak. "Hi, my name is Amu and I'm the freshman representative for this year. I'd just like to say—"
I was cut off when someone backstage seemed to trip and fall. There was a panic as a row of lights came crashing down from the pulleys they had been attached to with by ropes. Some girls in the crowd screamed as the lights fell toward me. There was no room behind me with the lights falling towards me, and I dove forward. My hands met the edge of the stage and I landed on my palms. In the split second I looked back, I realized I wasn't going to make it, so I sprung off my hands, flipping into the crowd.
I prepared for impact but none came. I looked back, realizing I had landed not-so-softly in the lap of a random senior in the front row.
"Are you okay?" He asked, his golden blonde hair seemed to shine in the light… of the collapsed spotlights.
I sheepishly jumped out of his lap and apologized profusely. Then, my outer self realized that I had nothing to apologize for… and that the boy in front of me was pretty good looking. I looked over my shoulder to find the teachers were up at the stage making sure no one was hurt backstage. I sighed realizing I was safe.
"That was a close one, wasn't it? Did you hurt yourself," the golden haired boy asked, a worried look on his face.
I finally found my voice again, my outer self gaining control once more. I shrugged my shoulders. "It was no big deal. I didn't hurt you or anything when I landed on you right?" I laughed as I said this jokingly. He smiled and shook his head. The people around us were watching as he excused himself and lightly took the mic out of my hand, walking up onto the stage.
He had been sitting in the front row. That means he was either very important or was going to speak at the assembly for some reason. Turns out, with my luck, that both were true.
He cleared his throat to get the crowd's attention. There was utter silence when people realized he was on the stage.
"Sorry for the confusion. I'm your student body president, Hotori Tadase. For now, we'll hold off on the rest of the opening assembly. Would all first period teachers please lead their students back to the classrooms and all other staff please help out with the stage. Thank you." As soon as he finished, everyone started moving. He seemed to have the respect of all the sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The freshmen followed along as everyone was whisked to their first class. I sighed once more as I walked to the first class on my schedule. That was not the most successful speech I'd ever pulled off.
Kukai's POV
I had watched the pinkette flip off the stage and land without a scratch as if it were a normal thing to do. She really was interesting. What I found even funnier was the fact that she landed in the little prince's lap. I would've burst out laughing if the entire assembly wasn't in complete chaos. Doing that would've made me look like a psychopath laughing at a fire. Either way, the best part was, they both looked stunned out of their minds. The pinkette must've been insanely surprised to land on the golden-haired student council president's lap. Even more so, Tadase must've been astonished to find a hot, pink-haired chick doing a handspring and landing on him. I merely smirked at them as they stuttered and composed themselves.
Now we were being led back to the classrooms. I snuck ahead and was the first in the classroom. After all, you wanna be able to pick the best seat you can, as soon as you can. Stalking around the room, I chose the second to last seat in the row nearest the door. It was a seat that was usually ignored by teachers yet easy to get in and out of the classroom from. I sat down in the seat as the teacher and the rest of the class came in, looking perfectly comfortable. No one was going to bother to chide me for getting in here early or picking my own seat. This year wasn't going to be so difficult to get through. I smirked and sat back in my seat.
Rima's POV
"It wasn't my fault!" I screamed at the teacher. The principle hadn't come in the office yet, and this guy wasn't even asking for my side of the story, spewing out all his blame onto me.
"Well, how do you explain being caught right where the ropes should've been with rope burns on your hands? No one else was near the area and you were assigned to manage the lighting. That was your trade-off not to attend the detention I gave you." The teacher was unfazed with my anger and deadly aura. I fumed. I wasn't going to spill my life out to this person.
"I'll wait to talk to the principal to settle this," I said flatly before turning my swivel chair away from him and kicking up my feet to cross my legs. He gave an exasperated sigh before storming out of the office to check where the principal was.
After a few moments, the principal appeared.
"Mr. Amakawa, this girl was found. We believe she was the one that caused the chaos at this morning's assembly." Leave it to the teacher to be the first to lay me on the cutting board and take a stab. I scoffed at his accusations and looked at the principal's reaction.
"And what is Rima's side of the story?" the principal asked calmly, looking straight at me.
"Actually, I should've never been asked to do it. I'm way too short to actually pull the levers above where the ropes were tied down. I tripped and fell onto them, and, with my luck, ended up snapping the ropes," I huffed.
"Why'd you accept the job then?!" The teacher had had enough of me.
"You mean 'why didn't I decline the job and accept an after school detention?'" I asked, glancing at the principal. The teacher seemed confused as to how this was a good argument.
The principal nodded knowingly and cut in, "I think we'll let this one slide, Rima. Next time, ask for another job politely." Never before had I been so happy that someone knew about my family troubles.
I guess I'm off the hook now!
Amu's POV
The class filed into the classroom and looked around, obviously contemplating where to sit. I watched as a familiar head of purple hair chose a seat in the second row. I quickly followed, sitting in the seat behind him. To my surprise, many of the other students chose seats next to me. Looks like my screw up at the assembly hadn't been all that bad. My outer self content, I sat back and relaxed… until I realized why I had chosen to sit here. I sat up and quickly tapped the shoulder of the person in front of me. The purple haired head turned to face me, revealing an all too familiar face with slight traces of makeup. I realized suddenly that he was wearing girly hair clips in his hair and had on a girls' uniform. It dawned upon me that the boy from this morning might actually have been a girl. I looked down at her figure and concluded that she was most definitely a girl. Confused she stared at me.
"Wait, Nagihiko, are you actually a girl? Why were you wearing a boys' uniform this morning?" I asked her. I could tell this surprised her but she quickly recovered and smiled politely.
"Actually, I've never met you in person, though I did see you this morning at the assembly," she admitted.
No, this person looked way to similar to not be the same. Makeup did wonders to make a person's features more feminine, but I was pretty sure she was the same person I had seen this morning.
She giggled at my staring and unbelieving look. "I think you might be confusing me with my brother."
"No way, not unless you guys are—"
Before I finished my sentence, she cut in, "We're identical twins. My name's actually Nadeshiko."
I gave her a dubious look but then put the pieces together. It made more sense than my conclusion. After all, the boy's voice from this morning had been a bit deeper and had been wearing a boys' uniform this morning. There was only one way to prove it, though.
"He goes to this school right," I asked. "I saw him wearing the school's uniform this morning."
"Yeah, but he didn't come to school today. He said the first day is the same every year and that it would be boring." She laughed before continuing, "Guess he was wrong. Wait till I tell him about what happened at the assembly tonight. He'll be here tomorrow asking about all the details!"
I blushed. That was not one of my best moments.
"That was very impressive, though," a voice from behind her said. I could recognize that peppy voice anywhere. I turned to find Yaya pouting at me. "You ignored me when I got in here! And I was so happy to be in the same class, too." She turned away in a fake sulk.
I laughed. "Yes Yaya, I'm happy we're in the same class. Will you forgive me if I bring you candy tomorrow?"
She instantly perked up and nodded excitedly. I laughed again as the bell rang to signal the start of first period. This year was going to be a breeze. It'll probably be fun too, though, I thought as I looked over at Yaya and Nadeshiko. Lots of fun.
So, tell me what you think about this chapter and the story so far! Opinions, thoughts, suggestions please. Don't forget to favorite and review (tell me if anything is confusing or sounds choppy)! I think Ikuto will be coming in next chapter or the chapter after that. Definitely soon, though! Then the real plot starts! *Suddenly realizes that every sentence in this AN has ended in an exclamation mark…!*
