I convinced myself I didn't like this fic, but then I wrote this chapter and now I'm getting into it.
"There's a door."
"A door?" Hook's voice was filled with doubt and he quirked one eyebrow up as he listened to Emma's explanation.
"Yes, a door," Emma replied, her frustration beginning to return. She pushed a branch out of her way very violently as she passed by. "It's somewhere on the island. It's carved into a sheer wall of rock. Probably a mountain. It was carved there long ago by a man who was stuck on the island with his wife." Emma paused, expecting Hook to interrupt her again with a sassy remark. He didn't though. She turned around to make sure he was following her.
He was there. "Continue on, love," he said.
She shrugged and turned back forward to continue walking through the treacherous forest. "He had magic. The man. He didn't use it often though and he carved the entire door by hand. No magic involved. The carvings were meant to represent the love he had for his wife by displaying images of her in the stone. At this point the door wasn't really a door though. It didn't open or go anywhere. It was just carvings in a mountain. But he had magic. So he used that magic to turn the section of carvings into a door that opened onto a portal. A portal that he and his wife would use to escape Neverland. They had been trapped there for years. He didn't want to release any of the other people living on Neverland though. He feared that if they were to escape and enter another world that they would destroy it. So he enchanted the door to always remain locked." Emma stopped walking. They had reached the lagoon. The waters were a shimmering turquoise that almost appeared purple. The water shimmered in the sun. In the distance you could catch sight of a few of the mermaids swimming near the jagged rocks. She crouched down and ran her fingers through the foam at the surface of the water as small waves hit the shore where they stood.
Killian had walked up behind her and watched as her eyes flickered close and she basked in the feeling of the sun's rays hitting her face. A small smile graced her lips and she looked completely at peace and utterly beautiful. "So how did they go through it?" he prompted.
"Oh," Emma startled as he broke her out of her short reverie. She stood back on and turned to him. "He enchanted it in such a way that only they could get through. Well, at least in a way that none of the inhabitants of the island could get through. The only way to unlock the door is with true love."
