Although Bane and his comrades still had control of the city, there was talk about the mysterious group of crazies that had challenged their authority. The day after the murders Bane had come out into the open and put a bounty on the heads of these criminals. He offered a pass out of Gotham for anyone that had information. Of course, many citizens jumped at the chance, only to find themselves trying to get across the frozen river. It was almost like a retort when another group of his men were found hanged next to the docks. Suddenly it seemed like the mercenaries were being victimized rather than the other way around. Then on a particularly cold night, all hell broke loose.
The city was quieter than usual; even Bane must have sensed something was afoot. The sewers were emptied of his men and large numbers patrolled every inch of Gotham. Citizens stared out of their windows or his behind bolted doors.
Then as the moon was at its brightest… the games began.
One by one, ragged individuals began to filter out into the night. Before long, there was a horde of them stalking down the street. It took even less time for them to be swarmed by Bane and his men. None of them showed fear; they knew that they were to die but, their Mother needed a sacrifice. She needed her darlings to be strong.
"Do you submit yourselves to me?" None of them answered…
And that's when Bane realised…
She wasn't there.
The explosion echoed throughout the abandoned city. All of them were dead; Bane shook with anger before sending the remaining mercenaries to the food stores and hideouts that were scattered within the city. The rest of the ex-patients were found not long after. She stood there with a grin; her plan had worked.
When Bane arrived, the mystery girl was sat atop of a crate. She was alone. Her darlings long gone; a dozen mercenaries laid at her feet.
"The shortest distance
Between two points
Is the line
From me to you." She carried on singing even as Bane approached.
"You have played well tonight."
"And you have done exactly as I wanted…" Her voice trailed off at the end, it was almost as though she was confused.
"Who are you?"
"Call me… Nix."
"But that is not who you truly ar-"
"Just like Bane is not who you truly are." His fists clenched as her bright eyes challenged him.
"Dr Crane?" The girl's mask broke as the disgraced physician appeared.
"Good evening, Miss Daly." She tensed before smiling again.
"Hello, Crane."
"I haven't heard the name Nix in quite a while. It seems so long ago that you were admitted into Arkham. I can still remember your voice echoing down the halls as you sang."
"Just like I remember your screams as I watched your own medicine turned against you."
"Shall we stop scoring points and finish playing these games?"
"Oh, Crane, you know I love a good game!" The young woman unfolded her legs and stood. Her arms swung by her hips and her head cocked to the side. "Would you like to play with me, Bane?"
"Don-"
"Quiet! Escort Doctor Crane back to his courtroom." Bane continued to stare at Nix as she began to spin on the spot. The moonlight exaggerated her scar; the marred skin stood out against her delicate features. Whilst she looked and acted very much like a teenage girl, the shape of her body and the old scars that littered her skin told Bane that she was in fact older. He would need to obtain her file, he felt uncomfortable as he knew so little about her.
"So… will you play?" Her once cheerful expression slid off her face, her lips were a fine line and her eyes told him that she was serious.
"What do you propose?" The smile quickly returned to her face; the swaying of her hips began. Her movements reminded Bane of an animal stalking its prey, it was almost as if she was ready to pounce.
"A chase." She came close to him and bit her lip in anticipation. "Cat and mouse… hide and seek… No rules."
"What happens when I win?"
"You gain a new ally."
"If you win?"
"I haven't decided yet… I don't plan ahead. You never know what may happen. I live in the moment… I play."
"When shall the game begin?"
"Tomorrow. When the moon comes out and the lunatics are set free… we shall begin."
"Very well. The game begins in 24 hours. I advise you to use your remaining time wisely." At that the mercenaries left the girl alone in the dark warehouse; her laugh haunted many of them as they slept.
Nix returned to the hideout with a large smile on her face.
There was a new game…a new game that she couldn't wait to start!
Oh, yes. Bane would be the perfect playmate.
"Mother!"
"Mother is home!"
"Scorpion, Mother has returned." She was greeted by the wild eyes of her remaining darlings. All of them were beyond excited to have their Mother back. They all looked up at her with love and greeted her with hugs and stories of what they saw on their way back to the compound. She nodded and spoke with them; none of them noticed that she wasn't actually listening. Her sights were set on the tall, lean man that stood towards the back. Half of his body was covered in shadow but, she could feel the heat of his gaze. As usual, Scorpion couldn't help but be jealous at the fact that she was ignoring his wishes. He should have learnt by now that Nix did as she pleased. She always got what she wanted… and Bane just so happened to be the thing that had caught her attention this time.
"My Nix, you have been such an awfully long time." The ever-theatrical Scorpion followed her into their den. "Has Bane agreed to your game, my sweet?"
"Of course, he has! I told you that I would gain myself a playmate in him." Scorpion couldn't hide the envy that came across his features.
"I thought that I was the only playmate that you needed…" He muttered to himself as she began to unlace her boots.
"Silly, little Scorpion… your song is always so sad. You need to smile more!" Her smile did nothing to sooth this burning anger.
"Are you no longer mine? Do you wish to belong to Bane?"
"I belong to no one! Not anymore!" The darlings all began to shout and scream as their Mother raised her voice. At the sound of their anguish, Nix exited her den. "Quiet! I shall have no more nonsense, now off to bed." They all scattered to their mattresses and blankets. Most of them squeezed together to fight off the winter cold, whilst others retreated to dark corners where they could barely be seen. Once Nix was happy with their positions, she retreated back to where Scorpion waited.
The den was a corner of the warehouse that had been small office; the door had been long ripped off but, a piece of fabric was held across the doorframe to block out prying eyes. The windows of the room had been painted over and the floor had been covered with different quilts to cushion the ground. The desk and chair had been left untouched, unlike the cabinets that had been thrown away to allow room for a mattress. Scraps of material covered the mattress and a ratty pillow was propped up in the corner.
The darlings knew to never enter the room when Mother and Scorpion had entered. It wasn't a place for them. Scorpion made sure to pin the fabric back across the doorframe before turning on Nix.
"Do you wish to replace me?"
"Don't be foolish, Scorpion. This little crush of yours could get you in an awful lot of trouble." At one point during her life, Nix would have been ashamed at how cold she was. However, that time was long gone, now she had to look after others and not let some fantasy get in the way of her plans. That was- no that had been her weakness: love. She was somewhat saddened that Scorpion could not see that she could never love another person… not after everything she had been through. She continued to ignore Scorpion's rant and merely slipped under the thickest blanket that covered her bed. He would calm soon; he always did.
"You're a tough little tadpole to love
Naughty lilies and lures
Oh, I was knocked to the floor
Never tasted as sweet
A poison as you have
You're an urge that can never be cured…"
A smile graced her lips as she felt his body move behind her. His arm wrapped around her waist as he sang into her ear.
"You're a bad little love
And I'm yours.
Babe, you're a hard game to catch
You fight and refuse
Oh, you're a wild little bruise
Never tasted as sweet
A poison as you have
You know you never can hide."
His reputation in Arkham was a great one. He was the King of Lies. Of course, he wasn't as well-known as the characters such as the Joker or Crane but, he had a reputation nonetheless. Scorpion allowed his hand to wander under her top, his hands hungry to grip the skin that he deemed his. The skin that Bane would never take from him!
"You're a bad little love
And you're mine." Nix joined in his little song, anything to keep him happy. After all, tonight was a night of celebration… She had a new playmate! Nix couldn't hide her excitement at the thought of a new game, perhaps even a new song to match! Her thin body moved to sit on top of Scorpion; he let her take control, as usual.
"So trust me, trust me
Darling, dear
I'm so sincere
There's no need to tear
Trust me, trust me
Darling, do…"
Scorpion welcomed the sight of her bare flesh as she raised her top over her head. Anyone that saw Nix's body may have gasped in alarm; her body was far too skinny to be deemed healthy but, Scorpion never uttered a sound. His eyes traced over the scar that made his blood boil before returning to his lover's face.
"Just like I trust you." He whispered the final words of the song before capturing Nix's lips with his own. Neither of them cared about the others hearing them, this was nothing new. Scorpion allowed himself to get lost in the passion whilst Nix let her mind travel elsewhere.
The chase was about to begin…
AN:
Another chapter! Hope you enjoyed this as much as the last one.
I have a feeling that this story will be a 3-parter and conclude with the end of the game, or I shall write a series of one-shots showing Nix interacting with numerous characters from the film.
Also, I won't do lyrics from songs from every TDC scene; some chapters will feature other songs whilst many won't have any at all. This just helps me build up the personality and sheer boldness of the OC.
For those of you that don't know this song, again it's from Devil's Carnival. It is called The Scorpion and The Frog.
And yes, I have based my Scorpion OC on some aspects of Senter's performance. So if you wanna visualise my Scorpion, then check out the song's video or watch the film!
Also, for the short moment when Nix is singing, I used lyrics from the song 'Between Two Points' by the Glitch Mob!
Anyway, you know the drill, review and follow to see the next updates. I'd love to know what you think since some of you have followed this!
DISCLAIMER: I claim no ownership over the lyrics used in the chapter, all credit goes to the writers and artists that created the songs.
