Chapter One

Are You Afraid of the Dark?

After pulling out the cell phone she swiftly dialed the numbers she knew by heart. Much to her dismay the line was busy. Hearing what should have been her supper close in on her forced her out of the alley and back down the road. Not being completely human gave her the advantage she needed to keep ahead of them. Whilst running she looked back to…happier times…

She was running across a wide and vast plain of green grass that brushed her ankles as her feet came in contact with the ground. Two young children were running behind her. The girl was dressed in a silken, coral gown which was shorter than that of a woman's so she could frolic without worry of getting the hem dirty. The little boy was wearing a white button-down shirt with ruffles along the collar and wrists. His trousers were black and fit snugly to his small, lithe form. Both children adorned black boots. She was wearing a gown of deep blue. The top fit snugly to her corset and the bottom flared around her in waves that looked like a gift from the ocean…

She smacked into something, hard. Had she been paying attention she would have ran around the man she had knocked down. "Please, excuse me." Her voice was cold, but from reminiscing, there was a soft note about it. "I would help you to your feet, monsieur, but I am currently in a state of hasten. Do forgive me." With that she went on her way.

Soon after, the man who had been knocked down was again knocked out of the way by 15 fairly large men. 'Wonder what that was all about.' He thought this to himself while thinking of the woman. She was clearly running from the men. 'It's not my problem.' Was the automatic thought that entered his mind. Then he turned around and followed the path that the girl and the posse of men had taken.

She was cornered. She didn't know how long the beast inside of her could remain calm. She didn't need a massacre on her conscious…what little she had left of one. Where her scrap with the smallest man left a cut above his collar bone, she sensed his fear. All mortals fear what they don't understand. It was the first thing she had been taught after she had been turned. This sense of fear reverberated off the other men, too. She became more confident and a slight smile appeared on her pale face.
