Chapter 2

(Hewitt family farm)

Melanie heard the rooster crow and announce the new day. As she got up and prepared to meet with the family downstairs; she wondered just how she ended up in such a predicament.

Here she was living with a psychotic family of cannibals; and she was now expected to wed their youngest son. Melanie groaned. Why did she offer marriage? Why couldn't she have bribed them like a normal person? With a hapless sigh, Melanie went to meet with her future in-laws.

"Well lookie here boys. Fresh meat!" Jeered Nubbins Hewitt.

"You shut your mouth! That there is Miss Melanie. She is Tommy's future wife." Came Drayton.

"Is she really? Well I'll be a donkey's sex doll! That's fantastic!"

In spite of the sinking feeling in her stomach; Melanie snickered at hearing Nubbins' words. Luda Mae then entered the kitchen and all the family stood to greet her.

"Good morning Mama." They all said.

Luda smiled at them all lovingly and wished them a good morning. She then turned her eyes on Melanie. Melanie shrunk back a bit. Mrs. Hewitt May look like a harmless old lady, but Melanie could tell that she commanded the utmost respect. And there would be hell to pay if she was crossed. So Melanie greeted her with the meekness of a church mouse. Mrs. Hewitt then smiled, glad that the new girl knew where her place in the house was.

"Let us give thanks to God for all he has done for us." She then said.

Everyone bowed their heads in prayer. As mama recited the morning blessing; Tommy glanced shyly at Melanie. She was very pretty. He hoped she would be a loving wife once they married. After prayer, everyone ate breakfast. Tommy sat next to her. Melanie offered him a small smile. Tommy beaned and clapped his hands. He was happy such a pretty girl like Melanie smiled at him. Tommy ate his meal then left to do his chores. One by one, all the Hewitts left to do their chores. Luda Mae said Melanie would help her with the women's work.

Throughout the day, Melanie did whatever Mama Hewitt told her to do. At around noon, the Hewitt's came in for lunch. Biscuits and gravy; with cold cuts and fresh brewed iced tea was what they had. After lunch was the midday Bible study and family prayer. Then, it was time to resume work until Supper was ready. As they all gathered around the table, Luda Mae lead a special grace.

"Dear Lord. We thank you for all you have blessed us with. You are our the rock on which our humble home is built on. And we are especially grateful for the blessing of the future wedding between our beloved Tommy and his fiancé; whose name you wrote next to his since before creation. Amen." She said.

Melanie shuddered. Did they really think she was going to bind herself to him and his insane family?

(Two Months Later)

Two months had felt like five years for Melanie. She had seen them kill and eat people. At that moment, she decidedly hated being stuck living with them. These maniacs were nothing like what the late night tabloid shows would talk about. Suddenly, there was a knock on her bedroom door.

"Come in." Said Melanie.

The door opened, and in walked Henrietta Hewitt. She was Melanie's only "friend" here, besides Tommy.

"I made you some tea." She said.

Melanie sat up. and beckoned Henrietta to join her. The girls starred at the small TV in Melanie's room. The host then came on the air.

"Tonight on "News Supernatural"; is the government hiding alien space craft in Area 51? Do the hills of the New Mexican desert really have eyes? Join us tonight, as we investigate these and other claims by both locals and visitors of this great state - New Mexico - in which one may find a wealth of both history and legend."

Click.

Henrietta had turned off the television.

"I don't like watching those spooky shows. Mama says it's Satanic. Why don't they talk about something godly?" She said.

Melanie shrugged.

"I suppose people like to be scared like that. But I'll tell you what. Those stories of mutated "hill people" in the desert is fake. I've traveled through New Mexico before. And I have never seen a single mutant out there."

"You saw that episode before?"

"Once, when I was at a sleepover."

Henrietta and Melanie then sipped their tea.

"Can I be honest about something with you Henrietta?" Ask Melanie.

She nodded. Melanie drew a cleansing breath.

"I don't want to marry Tommy. I don't want to be here. I am not even supposed to be here. I should've been with my cousin Rhett by now."

Henrietta then gingerly put down her cup and cleared her throat. She then took Melanie's hand in comfort.

"My brother Tommy, is all happy about you wanting to marry him. Yet, somehow, I knew it was too good to be true. But, before anyone gets upset; perhaps you should hear more about Tommy." She then said.

Melanie was silent as Henrietta recited the tragic stories of Leatherface's tormented childhood. When Henrietta finished; Melanie wiped her eyes. She felt so bad for Thomas. No one should suffer like he did.

"Poor man. And all he really wants - is someone to love him?" She said.

"Yes. So he is counting on you. He is also very sick. The poor boy. He might not last much longer. He wasn't supposed to live as long as he has."

Melanie bit her lower lip nervously. She couldn't stay with these cannibals; but she couldn't live with breaking Leatherface's heart.

"I will stay. But I must also see my family too." Melanie responded.

Henrietta nodded. After finishing her tea, she said goodnight and left Melanie's room.
