Chapter 2, Do you wanna build a snowman?
(Leo's P.O.V)
The following days that passed all looked the same. Ever since Donnie had blown up at the lunch table and had walked over to the barn, he had never been seen outside of the barn doors. Donnie hadn't even said a single word to us, even through the doors and if he did talk, it was always the same. 'Go away!' 'Leave me alone!' 'Get lost!' and so on and so forth. Mikey, April and I, and sometimes Raph and Casey, had tried to talk to him through the doors but he would never answer or listen long enough to hear what we had to say. At first we had thought that he had an invention or some other weird gadget he had to work on or something like that, but when he didn't come out of his room for days, other than to eat, we figured that something was wrong.
Raph tried to hide that he was worried, but it didn't work out so well, because we could all see that he was a bit concerned. He did what he usually did when he was concerned, worried, scared or anything like that, denied it. Casey acted kinda similar to Raph, but he had just started to get on good terms with Donnie so I could see he was a bit unsure of what was happening. While he and Donnie had worked on that car a few weeks back they had started too become better friends, so I could understand if he was confused. April and Mikey was hurt, that was easy to see. April and Donnie were best friends and shared a strong friendship. It was only natural that April was hurt by how Donnie was shutting us out. And the same could be said for Mikey, except that he kept trying to get Donnie to come out. It didn't pass one day without Mikey going out to the barn, knocked on the door and begged Donnie to come out. I mean, we all tried to coax him out, but Mikey did it every day several times a day.
Alex had almost stopped talking and only said a few things like, 'thank you' 'good morning' and other things like that. She did talk with us of course, but when we talked about Donnie, she just and as for me, well I was both confused and hurt by how we suddenly were shut out and left out of Donnie's life. As I said, the only times he came out it was to eat but then he was always quiet, never listened to what anyone of us had to say, so he could just as well have stayed in the barn. Raph had started to grow irritated and he wasn't exactly afraid to show it.
"All I'm saying that there's no reason for him to shut us out! I mean, we've done nothing wrong, right? I mean, we just recently saved his shell from the Shredder for crying out loud! What has made so upset that he can't even talk to us?!" I let out a heavy sigh. We were all sitting in the living room and talked about the current situation. Casey sat up a little straighter in the couch and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Maybe he's trying to come up with some new gadget or something like that. I mean, he has locked himself before when he has worked on something, right?" Mikey nodded, while he rested his chin in his hands and rested his elbows on his knees. I'm sure he tried to hide it, but he took this rather hard, since he and Donnie were really close. You could also see that his eyes were a little red and I assumed he had been crying earlier.
"Yeah, but not like this. He would come out to train, not just to eat and he would still talk to us. Now, he acts like he doesn't see us or know us at all. And he won't tell us why he's acting like this, why won't he let us in? What have we done?" At the end of sentence his voice started to break and the last questions didn't seem to be directed to anyone. I looked at him with pity and placed my arm around his shoulders. Mikey nuzzled his cheek into the crook of my neck and I felt a little wet on my neck, but I didn't care. I turned back to the others.
"You don't suppose it's something I've done, do you? I mean, we had a bit of a fight back in New York and before he got kidnapped my Tiger Claw. I just hope he's not angry at me, cause I am sorry for both events." Raph looked me with less anger in his eyes.
"It's not you Leo, before you from your coma woke up he was feeling really guilty about your fight and asked for your forgiveness even if you couldn't answer. No, it's gotta be something else." Alex, who had been standing at the window that showed the lawn, a dark cloudy sky, Alex's big metal trailer and her motor cycle, turned to us and for the first time since we met her, I saw a bit of real pity in her eyes, though I'm sure which one of us she pitied.
"Guys, can't you just leave him alone? If he is going through something hard, then he'll tell us when he feels ready. And I don't think that he'll come out if you keep threatening him through the doors. Just leave him alone, and I'm sure he'll come around eventually." Raph turned to her and got a scowl in his face.
"Oh, so you're saying that we should just ignore it and it will all be okay? That sounds just like a really stupid idea if you ask me! That's just like ignoring the Kraang and think it all work out in the end! It just doesn't work that way!" Alex didn't even flinch at Raph's words and just looked him in the eyes with a tired expression.
"Yeah? Well if you wanted to be alone cause you felt bad or had a personal problem, would you want others to try to make you talk with them about it? Would it make any easier to handle your problems?" Raph lost his angry scowl and sat down again and just rested his chin in his hand and frowned. April, who had been rather quiet for a while, looked over at Alex.
"Do you, do you think that Donnie has a problem? That it's something serious?" Alex bit her lip and looked out the window again. After a few seconds she let out a heavy sigh, but didn't look back at us.
"I think that it's something he wants to figure out on his own, and don't want anyone to help him. At all."
(Normal P.O.V)
Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months and soon November had arrived. And in the middle of November snow started to fall. Mikey woke up one day and saw that snow had started to fall during the night and now a thick blanket of snow was now covering the lawn. Mikey jumped out of bed and ran downstairs to get something to eat. Leo and Raph were already in the kitchen, eating breakfast and Mikey immediately took out a bowl, some milk and cereal and started to eat as fast as he could. He ate so fast some cereal got stuck in his throat and he started to cough and Leo placed his hand on Mikey's shoulder.
"Whoa, Mikey slow down. Your food won't go away or anything, so what's the rush?" Mikey didn't answer until he stopped coughing. Then he wiped his mouth with his arm and looked at Leo and Raph with wide eyes.
"I saw that there's a lot of snow outside today and I wanted to get out as soon as possible and build a snowman! You wanna join me? We could have a snowball fight or snow wrestle like we did when we were kids!" Leo smiled and nodded.
"Sure, I'm in. What about you Raph?" Raph shrugged and ate the last bite of his toast nonchalantly.
"Sure, whatever." Mikey smiled widely and flew up from the table. He ran upstairs and came back down with his orange scarf wrapped around his neck.
"Well, see ya outside! I'm gonna see if Donnie wanna play!" Before any of the other turtles could stop him he ran outside and ran across the barn and stopped in front of the big doors.
"Donnie?" He knocked on the door rhythmically. "Do you want to build a snowman? Come on, let's go and play!" He leaned against the doors and put his ear against the wood and leaned back on his heels.
"We never see you anymore. Come out the door, it's like you've gone away! We used to be best buddies and now we're not. I wish you would tell me why!" He turned around and put his cheek and other ear against the door and put both hands on the door as well.
"Do you want to build a snowman? It doesn't have to be a snowman..." He was interrupted when a voice from inside called back.
"Go away, Mikey!" Mikey flinched at the harsh tone and took a few steps away from the door, before he dejectedly started to walk away.
"Okay, bye." Raph and Leo soon came out and the turtles, along with their human friends and they all started to play in the snow. April and Mikey started to build a snowman while Casey and Raph started a snowball fight against Alex and Leo.
What no one of them saw was that the barn doors was slightly open and Donnie peaked out of the barn and watched his family have fun while he was in the barn. He smiled slightly at them before he closed the door again. He sighed and pulled on his gloves to make sure that they were on and took a deep breath.
"Keep your head on Donnie. Just stay calm and it'll be fine." He looked around the lab and saw that frost had started to spread from the floor and up the wall and some ice had started to crawl over the floor. He took another deep breath and clenched his hands into fists.
"Conceal, don't feel. Don't let it show." He muttered to himself before he sat down at the desk and started to push on the buttons on his laptop.
November passed and turned into december and it got colder for every day that passed. Leo jumped out of the van and started to help April and Casey to carry in the bags of food and other supplies into the house. He had volunteered to help April and Casey keep an eye on groceries so nothing would break, since they all took their turns on that, for one reason because they wanted to help and because it could get a little tedious being stuck at the farmhouse all the time.
When he came in he saw that Mikey was making hot chocolate at the kitchen counter and had just put the pot on a plate and turned up the heat so it could get warm. He turned to Leo and smiled at me.
"I was craving for some hot chocolate and thought I should make some for all of us. What do ya say bro? Want a cup?" Leo didn't even have think it over, he nodded and reached into the paper bag and pulled out a plastic bag with mini-marshmallows.
"Sure, and we could have some of these along with it." Mikey squealed in delight and ran up to me, snagged the bag and ran around the kitchen a few laps before he calmed down and turned back to the out of chocolate on the stove. Leo smiled, shook his head at his little brother and placed the paper bag on the kitchen table before he walked out again. April and Casey had grabbed the last bags with food and started to walk back. Leo's eyes fell on the barn and he started to think about Donnie. Was he cold? His scarf was still inside the farmhouse, so what if he got sick? How would they help him then?
"You coming Leo?" April asked from the door. He realized he stared out into nothingness and he shook his head slightly to snap out of it. He looked back to the barn and then looked back at April, who had her hand on the doorknob, ready to close the door.
"I'll come in, just give me a minute." April looked over at the barn door, then nodded understandingly and closed the door. He sighed and walked over to the barn and knocked on the door.
"Do you want to build a snowman? And drink some chocolate in the halls?" Leo played a little with the dark blue scarf around his neck and absentmindedly started to count the small white stars that covered the fabric.
"I think some company is overdue. Who are you talking to, the spiders on the walls?" Just as Leo said that he saw a small spider hanging from its web, though now it was dead and just hung there and he flicked it away in disgust.
"Ugh..." He shook his head and kept going. "It must get kinda lonely, sitting in that room, just watching the hours tick by." Leo played a little with his fingers and rolled from his toes and then back on his heels a little restlessly.
"Do you wanna build a snowman? It doesn't have to be a snowman..." Leo got a little bit disappointed when he didn't hear anything from inside the barn so he started to walk away from the barn. "Alright, fine."
Inside the barn, Donnie was pacing back and forth over the now ice covered floor and tried to calm down his breathing, though it didn't work se well. Frost and ice had crawled all over the walls and icicles had started to grow from the ceiling and that did not help the fact that Donnie was so close to panic.
"Get it under control, get it under control." He muttered to himself and put his pinky and index finger on his temples and tried to think of other things. "Get it together. Control it already. Conceal, don't feel, conceal, don't feel. Don't FEEL!" He yelled at himself, when a cracking sound from above made him look up from the floor and looked up at the ceiling and saw that the icicles up there had started to grow in size, length and pointiness, the ice got thicker on the floor and on the walls and snow started to fall from nowhere, and he whimpered in fear and fell to his knees and sobbed lightly.
Christmas arrived, as it does every year but no one really felt like celebrating. For one very obvious reason, the fact that their families weren't their celebrate it, the fact that New York was taken over by aliens and for a second reason, one of them wasn't there to celebrate it. Donnie had stopped coming out of his lab for every meal and only came out for every other meal and it felt weird to celebrate after all that had happened. All they decided to do was eat some simple christmas dishes and then watch some Christmas Specials on TV.
While April and Mikey started to cook up dinner and Leo and Casey started to set the table, Raph decided to light a fire, but then saw that they didn't have any firewood left in the basket beside the fireplace. He sighed heavily and grabbed a basket from the hallway, then put his dark red scarf around his neck and opened the door.
"I'm going to get some more firewood, I'll be right back." He called out and then closed the door behind him. He shuddered at the cold temperature outside, but shook it off and started to walk towards the firewood shed, but then stopped when he saw the barn and hesitated. He took a glance at the firewood shed, then back at the barn and then sighed heavily.
"Ugh, I can't believe I'm doing this." He muttered to himself and walked over to barn doors, and slowly knocked on it.
"Donnie? Please, I know you're in there. We've all been wondering how you've been." He had to take deep breaths to keep himself from breaking down. The last few months had been tough and it was usually Donnie that Raph talked to since he never tattled or teased him, and now he wasn't really there.
"They say, "have patience" and I'm trying to. I'm right out here for you, just let me in." His voice started to feel shaky and it was getting harder and harder to keep himself from crying. Raph hated to cry, Raphael never cried! But now, it was hard not to.
"Please come out dear brother, it's just me and you. Tell me, what are we gonna do?" Raph leaned his back against the barn door and then slid down until he sat down in the cold, wet snow. He usually despised the cold, but right now he didn't care, he just hugged his legs close to himself and leaned his shell against the door. A few tears slipped out from his eyes and he leaned the back of his head against the door.
"Do you want to build a snowman?" He sighed and just let his tears fall from his eyes and didn't care about if anyone saw him.
Inside the barn, in the exact same position as his brother was in, Donnie sat against the door and sighed in despair. He wanted nothing more than to let his brother in and tell him everything, but he was too scared to say anything. Besides, if he did let Raph in, he might hurt him!
He looked out over the barn and saw that every inch of the room was covered in frost, ice and snow. From the ceiling hung dozens of dangerously pointy icicles, the floor was made entirely of ice now, the walls had nice patterns in the frost and snow fell from the ceiling, even if there was no sky or clouds for them to fall from. Donnie let out a shaky breath, before he buried his face in his knees and started to cry, and on the outside Raph dried away the last ones of his tears, stood up and left, feeling rather depressed and one thought went through his head.
"Worst Christmas ever."
