Thank you to everyone who left a review on the first chapter of this story along with those who followed and favourited it. Here is the second and final part of this two-shot. It's Matt's POV and how he deals with the bomb that Violet drops on him at the diner.

I had a pleasant surprise the day before when my phone rang and it was Violet on the other end. She asked me to meet her and Christie for breakfast before my shift. ever since my mother had moved out of my house to give me and Christie a chance at being brother and sister again, I took it and and never looked back.

I walked in the diner and spotted a waitress. "I'm looking for my niece and her mother. The little girl is twelve years old." She didn't have time to answer me when I spotted Violet at a table, alone. "Never mind, I see her." The waitress smiled at me and I walked in Violet's direction.

"Hey, there she is." I kissed her on the top of her head before sitting down across her.

"Hey uncle Matt, thanks for coming." she smiled at me.

"Where's your mom?" the look on her face told me she was here by herself and she had lied to me. "Violet, you said your mom was going to be there. What's going on?" She just looked at her hands that were resting on the table in front of her. That's when I saw it. "Hey! Look at me." I took her chin in my hands and listef her head up so I could take a good look at it. I moved the strand of hair aside that was hiding the red bruise around her eye. "Violet." I sarted, concerned.

"My mom doesn't know I'm here."

"What happened to you?"

"I had a fight at school. I can't tell mom because I'm already in trouble." She pushed a folded sheet of paper across the table. "Can you sign it for me?" I unfolded the paper and the headed didn't look familiar to me. My brows knitted together in worry and concern before I looked back up at her.

"What happened to the Latin school?"

"I had to switch when we moved."

"You moved?" Bomb number one of the day had just been dropped.

"Can you sigh it or not?"

"Yeah, I can sign it." I looked up at her from the paper a few times as I signed it, memorising Christie's new adress from it. I made it my prority to go see her today and clear all of this out. I left shortly after and drove to 51, my mind playing over the discussion I just had with Violet. I was walking through the halls of 51, looking at my phone when Gabby walked in my direction.

"Hey, hey, how was breakfast?"

"Get this. Christie and Jim jammed Violet in this huge public school in Logan Square where they now live.

"When did all of this happen?" She was as surprised at i was.

"It must have been recently but Christie never said anything about it. I should know this stuff, I'm a terrible brother." I sighed. Apparently, I wasn't doing such a good job at this relationship with her if I didn't know about these things when they happen.

"No, no, you're not. You're definitely not." Her hand on my cheek did nothing to stop the easiness that was creeping up on me.

"Yeah." I pulled away and headed for the bathrooms, finding Severide throwing up the contents of last night binge. Today would not be the kind of easy shift. Things only got from bad to worst. We got back from a structure fire that hadn't gone as planned and that's when I decided I needed to go see Christie. I approached Boden with my request.

"I won't be long."

"Ok."

"Herrmann. You'll fill in acting lieutenant for half an hour? I have a little personnal business."

"Yeah sure."

"Good luck." Gabby called as she was removing her turnout gear.

"Thanks." I did the short drive to Logan Square and when I got to Christie's new adress, I tapped on the door with my fingers and waited for her to answer me. "Hey Christie." I greeted her with a hug as she opened the door.

"Matt. What a surprise! Come on in."

"Thanks."

"So, what happened to the house?"

"We had to do a little belt tightening. How did you find us?"

"I took your adress off Violet's detention slip. She got into a fight Christie." My level of concern was going through the roof with every minute I spent in that house.

"That damn school. They're supposed to be keeping an eye on the situation." From her reaction, it wasn't the first time Violet had gotten into a fight at that school.

"This isn't the first fight?" I just needed to hear it from her.

"We're on top of this. Jim and I went down there, we're going to go again believe me."

"What's going on with you guys?"

"It's nothing, just a few bad investments. I really have to call the school right now."

"I worry about you Christie."

"You don't have to be."

"I'm your brother, let me help you." She was being so defensive right now.

"Just don't worry about us. We're going to be fine." She said storming away to the kitchen. That was pretty much the end of this discussion. I let myself out and made my way back to the house. I revlieved Herrmann from the lieutenant and borrowed Dawson, so busy with what was going on to notice the rest of the house around me. We walked on the house lot away from prying ears.

"Christie and Jim are basically broke. They've got to get their act together you know?"

"I know but." She tried but I didn't let her finish her thought.

"I tried offering help, money, something but she's embarassed, proud, I don't know. Maybe you could talk to her."

"Can we deal with this another time?" She pleaded but I just kept going.

"I didn't always have Chritie in my life. Our mom brought us back together because she wanted us to be there for each other and I don't feel like I've held up my end of the bargain."

"Well, if she's too proud to take it, give it to Jim."

"Thank you." I walked back into the house and made a quick phonecall to make sure Jim was in. "81, in the truck, we're taking a ride." I gave the adress to Cruz and we drove off towards Jim's office. "I'll be right back." I hopped off and made my way into the office building and towards Jim's office. I walked through the halls until I found what I was looking for. Jim looked up from what he was doing and looked surprised to see me.

"Matt."

"Hey."

"Hey, what are you doing here?" I extended my hand which he shook before I continued.

"Listen, I was speaking to Christie earlier about Violet's school situation. I don't want you to take this the wrong way but if there's any chance of getting Violet back into her old school, I'd be more than happy to pitch in.

"That's a nice offer but you know what? I think things will level out a bit. Once we're done with mediation and the divorce is you know, finalized."

"Divorce?" Bomb number two of the day being dropped as we speak.

"What she didn't tell you?"

"Jim, what happened?"

"You know, lots of little things piling up over the years. And financial problems certainly take their toll."

"We have got to find a new coffee place babe, that line." I turned around and came face to face with a woman who isn't my sister, calling her husband babe. I looked back and forth between the two as my blood began to boil and the realization of what was going on dawning on me.

"Jim, is everything ok?" She didn't seem to know what was going on here and I was more than willing to hear the stupid excuse he was about to feed me.

"Why wouldn't everything be ok?" I directed my question at Jim."

"Matt." He tried to get out of this but I didn't let him.

"You're a real piece of work." I walked past the little brunette that was clearly seeing my sister's husband while they were still married and walked back out. This was far from being over with. Now I made it my mission to get to the bottom of this and protect my family. We drove back to the house, I was still fuming. I dragged gabby to the locker room and she sat on the bench while I paced.

"She called him babe. I think it's a safe bet they're sleeping together." I leaned against the lockers.

"You're probably right but maybe Christie already knows."

"Maybe. I don't like it."

"Baby, I wouldn't read too much into this. Divorce makes people act crazy."

"That's my point." I resumed my pacing. "Something's up. What do we really know about Jim anyways? I'm going to check this guy out. Let's get Antonio involved."

Gabby didn't seem to like the idea. "Antonio and Laura are going through the same thing right now. I'd leave them out of it."

"What about what's his name Halstead?"

She didn't seem to like that idea either. "I have a better idea. You know, Adam Ruzek." I nodded, I knew who he is. "Antonio trusts him."

"I'll reach out." I went to 21 with Mouch. "Morning Sargeant. I'm meeting Adam Ruzek down here."

"That's him right there."

"Thank you." I made my way towards Ruzek. "I know this is a big asking, you don't owe me anything but my sister isn't thinking straight right now. I just need to know what's going on."

"Fair enough. What's Jim's last name?"

"Jim Jordan, Jordan Development."

"Alright. Ok. I'll do some poking around but I can't run a wire or anything like that but I can figure out a lot of things withought getting too dirty."

"Alright thanks I owe you."

"Yeah ok. I'll get back to you."

"Ok. I turned around and went back to the house. The next morning, I was sitting at the round table when Ruzek came walking in. "Hey Ruzek."

"Matt. Hey, you got a second? We should talk in private." I got up and motioned for him to follow me to the bunk area. "Well your instincts were spot on. This guy Jim and his receptionist are definitely hanging out." I knew it. I knew there was something there. "Wait, it gets worst." I couldn't see how worst this could get. "You said he and your Christie are broke?"

"Yeah."

"Yeah, no. By the looks of it, his company is doing just fine. For the last year at least, he's been playing a sort of shell game to keep his assets out of your sister's reach."

"He can't get away with this right?" The more I listened to what Ruzek had found, the more unsteady I became. I needed to fix this for Christie.

"He can. He relinquished control of the company to a third party, Carrie Hathaway. You know who that is?"

"The receptionist."

"Uh huh. So bottom line is, if your sister signs off on any sort of mediation agreement, that jackass will get all of the assets and there's not a damn thing anybody can do about it." I was fuming now

"Alright."

"Sorry man. Listen, if you need anything else I got your back, just let me know."

"Ok." I exhaled as he left. I needed to wrap my head around what just happened and what I found out from him. The next call gave me a reason to focus a little more and stop thinking about the scam my brother-in-law was running on my sister. The next morning when shift was over, I went directly to Christie's house.

"So this has been going on for a year?" the tears that were forming in her eyes broke my heart.

"At least, maybe longer."

She offered a sob before continuing. "I thought we could work it out."

"I know."

"He allowed me to believe that."

"You don't have to go through this alone. We'll get you a good lawyer."

"No. I'm tired of fighting. I just want to settle this and be done with it."

"Christie, you can't let him get away with this." i tried reasoning with her."

"Matt it's my life and I just want to get on with it." I sat closer to her on the couch and wrapper her in my arms as she cried.

"Mom?" I looked up to see Violet coming down the stairs. I got up and went to her. With all ofthis happening, Violet was the one that was suffering the most.

"Listen, I've been where you are Violet. It's going to be ok, I promise you that. Come here." She came down an extra stair and I wrapped her in a hug. Later that evening, Gabby was tending bar at Molly's and I nursed a beer, thinking about this whole mess.

"You sure you're ok?" She questionned me.

"I'm fine."

"Don't beat yourself up. You can't fight this battle for her you know." She then walked to serve someone else at the other end of the bar. Just then, chief walked in.

"Hey."

"Hey chief."

"Don't act so damn surprised. I have been in a bar before lieutenant."

"I know I just don't see you here much."

"Donna wants some time to herself. She's been unpredictable lately."

"Chief can I ask you a question. What did it take to take Cruz off suspension?"

"I won't be included in the next round of promotions, that much I know. But we've got to stand up for our people, even if it's a tough fight." Chief always knew just what to say to put things in perspective.

"Thanks chief." I locked eyes with Gabby before I grabbed my coat and headed outside. I grabbed my phone and dialed Ruzek. "I need a favour." I said before getting into my truck. Five minutes later, I recieved an adress as a text. It took me about twenty minutes to make it to the fancy restaurant downtown. It didn't take long for me to spot them cuddling and laughing together in a booth, no doubt enjoying ripping off my sister for what she was worth. When they noticed me, they quickly pulled apart and the look in their eyes made me know I had achieved my surprise.

"Shut up and listen Jim." I didn't give him time to say a single word. "I'm going to come to your office, 8 am sharp, and we're going to take a long hard long look at your books. so Carrie, why don't you have those ready huh?" I looked at her.

"I don't know what Christie told you."

"One more word and I'll knock you flat on your ass." I threatened, pointing my finger in his direction. "8 am. Don't make me come find you."

I walked through Jim's office the next morning, having to find him on my own. I opened the door where I was finally told where he'd be, in a meeting. "You really think she's knuckle under that easy? You were going to run a game and leave?"

"No one is running a game Matt. I'm leaving your sister ok. Now this can go one of two ways. We can have an all out dog fight in court or Christie can take the offer on the table. Two grand a month for the next four years."

"What about the house?"

"It's still on the market." The gaul of him. Suggesting that Christie buy a house that he could easily leave her.

"So what, you're ok with leaving your wife and your daughter with no home and not enough to live."

"They can keep the apartment."

"For the past year, you've been moving assets around in a shell company owned by your piece of ass on the side Carrie Hathaway." Jim handed me a pile of documents. "What's this?"

"The documents in your hands authorize the transactions you're talking about. You'll know that Christie co-signed everyone of them." I looked through each labelled page and say my sister's signature all over them. That son of a bitch managed to make her sign things she had no knowledge off. "You're welcome to take those with you."

"You're not going to fleece my sister, not without getting bloody." I left his office, banging the door shut. I drove back to the house, determined to find something else to help Christie. I walked in the common room to Kelly trying to teach Capp how to play crabs with members of each company around them. I put a hand on Gabby's shoulder to let her know I was back.

"Hey, how did it go?"

"Not so good. Newhouse, you got a sec?" He followed me into the hallway so we could have a little bit of privacy. "Do you know any divorce lawyers?" He looked through his contacts to find what he needed.

"Use my name, he'll help you."

"Thanks man." The next call was something else. This kid had stuck his head between bars and I had to focus on the task at hand, my mind still on Christie and Violet. I briefly spoke with Gabby when shift was over but she couldn't come with us so I left to go meet up with Christie and the attorney that Newhouse recommended. We were guided in a large office to sit down.

"We apreciate you taking the time to see us, especially on short notice."

"Anything for Newhouse."

"So, as I explained on the phone, my sister didn't know exactly what she was signing. Jim kept her in the dark for most financial masters."

"Excuse for being abrupt but I spoke with opposing council and I'd be happy to represent you. You have an imminently winnable case."

"That's great to hear."

"Clearly there's more money than your husband let's on, no question."

"Alright, where do we go from here?"

"First, we file a preliminary injunction to stop him from moving anymore assets and then we hire a forensic accountant."

"That sounds expensive."

"I use the best firm in Chicago so it's won't be cheap but it's going to take your case on contingency so it won't cost you a payment up front. I need you to understand what you're about to get yourself into. It starts out as a financial battle usually ends up in an all out custody battle. It's not going to be easy on anybody, least of all you. Odds are, we can recover 50,60 percent of the assets or you can take the offer on the table, it's up to you."

I could see in her eyes that she was extremely overwhelmed by all of this and what this lawyer was telling us. "You have to fight this Christie. You can't let Jim get away with this."

"i don't know Matt. This has gone on way beyond what I was prepared for."

"I'll be there with you every step of the way." I tried to reassure her, hoping to get through. "Whatever you and Violet need, I promise."

"I need time to think ok." she stood up.

"Thanks." I shook the man's hand and we left. Next shift, if there wasn't a fire, I was sitting in my office, trying to make sense of all of this mess. I went outside and watched Herrmann do drills with Dawson, figure some air couldn't be bad. Then I saw Christie and Violet walk up the driveway.

"Her, are you guys ok?"

"Sorry to bother you."

"It's ok you're not. what's up?"

"I'm on my way to take the teachers test, to get recertified and I could find a sitter. Is there any way i could drop off Violet an hour? Maybe two?"

"Yeah sure." I smiled at them. Violet hadn't been at the firehouse in forever. "Want to say hi to Pouch?" I suggested to her so she could give me and Christie a few minutes to talk." She said yes and went directly in the house in search of the dog. "So what do you want me to do with Bankhead?"

"The divorce attorney? I'm not doing it Matt. I'm going to take the settlement offer."

"Alright. Good luck on the test."

"Thanks." She smiled at me and left. I went back inside, in search of Violet. I ultimetely found her sitting on the bumper of the ambo, watching a video her friends had made for her.

"What do you watching?" I leaned against the ambo.

"My friends at the Latin school sent me a Vine."

"Hey. You ok?" I sat down next to her, she was worrying me.

"I miss my house and my school. I don't know why my dad is doing this to us. I don't know what I did." I instinctively pulled her into a hug. I hated Jim even more in this moment to know that Violet was hurting and thinking it was her fault all of this was happening to them.

"Hey. It's not your fault. It's going to be ok, I promised." I looked her in the eyes, hoping she believed me. I looked up to find Newhouse watching us. "I'll be right back." I got up and went in his direction.

"What?" He asked, leaning against the glass door leading inside.

"I need more information. There's got to be something else."

"Your brother-in-law? I thought Ruzek gave you everything you needed."

"Not him, the mistress."

"You dig deep enough, sooner or later you will find a body. Then what?"

"Just do whatever it takes."

"Ok." he left. Whatever it took was the least I could do so Jim wouldn't rip my family apart. I busied myself doing inventory on the truck and making sure everything was working when Newhouse came up to me.

"What's up?"

"I got something for you." He handed me a sheet of paper with the most interresting piece of information. I got everyone on the truck and we went for a ride. I was going to finish this once and for all. Once we got there, I walked through the fancy restaurant in order to find Jim, sitting at the bar, discussing business.

"We need to talk."

"If you'll excuse me." He followed me to a quieter part of the restaurant to talk. "Anything you need to say can be direted to my attorney."

"Four years ago, your little mistress, married a man from Montgomery Alabama, faked his will, the kids sued and she split. That's a bench warrent for her arrest." I placed the paper in front of him on the table. "You're welcome to keep that copy." I used his own words from earlier against him. "I drop a dime, she's gone and giving your assets are in her name, the money is gone too. I'm sure you'll do what's right, for your DAUGHTER." I left, leaving him to think about what I just said. I walked in the locker room the next morning to Herrmann talking to Dawson.

"I'm going to check in on Violet and Christie."

"Can I come with you?"

"As your fiancé, I'd apreciate that." She closed her locker and we were on our way to Christie's house. Gabby knocked on the door and let herself in.

"Hello?" She called.

"Be right down." Christie called from the top floor.

"Hey. Good to see you Gabby." They hugged each other. "You'll never believe it."

"What?"

"Jim came by."

"And?" Judging from the smile on her face, it was good news.

"He's doubling the child support payments, paying Violet's tuition at the Latin School AND he took the house off the market. We move back in this week end." I smiled at Gabby and gave Christie a satisfied look.

"That's great."

"He's not a bad man Matt, I told you. He has a good heart." This wasn't the reaction from her I was expecting but then again, she had no idea what I had done to get them to this point.

"Yeah. Congratulations. Violet must be happy."

"She's waiting foryou to tuck her in." I walked around her to get to the stairs when she turned around and stopped me in my tracks. "Hey Matt." I turned around on the stair and acknowledged her. "Is there something? I mean did you do anything for it to turn out like this?" I gave her a I have no idea what you're talking about look and shook my head no before going up the rest of the way up.

"Violet?"

"Hi."

"Hey."

"We're moving back to our old house and i'm going back to my old school."

"Yeah, that's what I heard."

"I'm so happy."

"Yeah, you're mom is too."

"I know."

"Come on, I'll tuck you in."

"I knew you'd fix it uncle Matt."

"It turned out ok huh?"

"Yeah." I kissed her on the forehead.

"You know I'll always be there for you." I turned off ber light and went back down to spend the rest of the evening with Gabby and my sister. I was happy that things ended the way they did. At the end of the day, family was the most important thing in the world to me and I would go to any lengths in order to protect it.

a/n So here is the last chapter of this little two shot. I know this one is significantly longer than the first one but since Matt has such a bigger role in the tv show and that episode, that's why it was longer to write his side.

I hope you enjoyed it and please take a few minutes to leave a review to tell me what you think.
