"Neji, my youthful friend!" Lee grins widely as soon as Neji arrives at the training grounds, and he can't help but bounce up and down excitedly on the soles of his feet. His teammate looks at him and seemed completely disinterested, but that's just his way of saying 'hello' and 'stop being so loud.' Lee gives him a thumbs up to show he understands.
"We're taking a team photo today," Tenten informs Neji resignedly from her perch up in the branches of a tree, and Lee knows that the slight narrowing of the Hyuga's eyes means he's irritated and more than a little concerned.
Lee bounds back to Gai-sensei, who is trying to set up the camera and muttering to himself ("If my eternal rival can figure out how to use this then I can too!").
A sudden scuffling sounds from behind him and then, "Oh, hell no!" He turns just in time to see Neji trying to make a run for it and Tenten is off like a shot, screaming, "Get back here, Hyuga!" and Lee throws himself after them without a second thought, laughing at his dear friends' antics.
They end up somewhere in the middle of the forest, in a dusty heap with Neji on the bottom and Tenten on top of Lee. They lay there panting for a while, and then Tenten and Lee each grab one of Neji's arms and haul him back to the clearing.
Gai-sensei waits with a triumphant grin. "My youthful students!" he screams, and Lee salutes happily (he has his best friends by his side and the sun is shining and his teacher has wrangled with technology and won; what is there to be sad about?).
Neji is resignedly wedged between Lee and Tenten on either side and Gai-sensei stands behind them and clicks the shutter. The light flashes and then Lee grabs the picture from the camera and sees the Hyuga genius frowning sullenly.
"Gai-sensei!" he wails. "Neji wasn't smiling!"
"Don't worry my youthful student! We will redo it!" Gai pats Lee on the head fondly.
And Tenten is glaring at both of them (but especially at Neji) and Neji looks like he really, really wanted to leave and Lee feels like he is the luckiest ninja in Konoha.
