Hello again! I made a mistake on the last chapter. The doctor's last name is supposed to be Lytar. Yeah, you read that right. Think on that for a moment. ?
Chapter One
Shawn was a cautious fourteen-year-old boy. It was simply a matter of life like breathing or walking. If an officer walked by, a normal person would have kept going about their business, whereas Shawn ducked into the nearest alleyway and hid until the danger had passed.
The fact was, he lived a dangerous life and one little slip-up could end it really quick. Oh sure, he was less cautious than others in the situation. But telling those couple of officers that he was psychic was just so simple.
Really, it was incredibly obvious that the balding one was cheating on his wife, and even more obvious that the short one was an embezzler. They kept their silence about the young Imperfect boy once they knew what he knew, right?
One and a half years living on the streets as an Imperfect had taught him a lot. In a few ways, he was almost glad that she had-
No, he told himself, don't think about what happened.
Shawn just about stopped in the middle of the street to wallow in self-pity but took a deep breath and kept walking.
After pausing at the alley, he looked both ways and turned into the dark, slim space.
The tunnel was about half of the way down where he would stop, crouch, and run his hands over the wall until he found the entryway.
Carefully securing his bag over his back, Shawn slipped into the tunnel and crawled through until he reached his home where he straightened and got to his feet.
It wasn't much of a home really. There was a sleeping bag on the side of the tiny room and a space where he kept all of his stolen food on the other. This time when he entered the place, it was different. There was a girl inside.
She had her back turned to him and seemed to be checking out the place.
Shawn must have taken a wrong step or something, because next thing he knew, the girl had whipped around and was holding up a knife blade.
"Who are you? How did you get in here?" she said forcefully, although her voice shook a bit.
"Me? I live here! What are you doing here?" Now that the girl had turned around, he could see her more clearly. She looked to be about the same age as him, pretty, he thought, but then again, he didn't have a ton of experience with girls.
She tilted her head to stare at him, as if giving him an X-Ray. "You're one of us, aren't you?" she asked.
"What do you mean by one of us? If you mean Tears for Fears lovers, then I certainly am one of us." Shawn was indeed quite smitten with the band. Randy (the doctor who had once saved his life) had had several old Tears for Fears songs that Shawn would put on and dance around the living room, laughing, with…. Wow, twice in a day. He really needed to get his emotions in check.
The girl rolled her eyes, though Shawn could see the laughter in her eyes. "You know what I mean."
With a sigh, Shawn slowly rolled up his pant leg to reveal the birthmark. Though he understood the reasoning, he missed the days when he could wear shorts.
She mouthed 'oh' and lowered the knife blade. "Sorry about that. I'm Juliet by the way."
He smiled. Juliet. The name suited her. "Nice to meet you, Jules. I'm Shawn Spencer."
Juliet paused for a second, wondering over the name of Jules, but realized there was more pressing matters. "How do you know your last name?" She seemed to have decided to completely trust him now, because she flopped down on the stone floor and beckoned for him to join her.
Obeying the summons, he sat down beside her and said, "I was raised by a doctor that saved me from the officers. Up until a year and a half ago, I lived with him and his dau- uh, I mean, his goldfish.
"His goldfish?" She raised an eyebrow.
Mentally kicking himself, Shawn replied, "Yeah. Goldfish. His name was Frankie and it was my job to feed him every day."
"Oh." She nodded. "Unfortunately, my doctor was not as nice. I lived in captivity until a couple months ago, when I escaped during a prisoner transport."
They swapped stories like this for the next couple hours until the sky was beginning to get dark. Like some sort of unspoken agreement, both Shawn and Juliet laid their heads on the sleeping bag and fell into a deep sleep.
Get it? She stole his spot? She stole his- never mind. I hope you liked this chapter! Please review!
