Update time! Sorry I haven't updated in a awhile, I've actually had this chapter mostly written for about a month now. ~laughs nervously~ Well, enjoy!
I would usually pride myself for being ready in any situation and I tend to try and make sure I don't go anywhere without a weapon of some type, but that day I wasn't prepared in any way. Who would be? A freaking zombie appears while you're at school and you use a metal door to beat it's head in. Not exactly my choice of weapon, but choices are only given when fate pities you. In this situation, the only thing I could rely on was my level head; without it, I'd probably be dead by now.
So, as Miyuki, Daisuke, and I sprinted down the stairs, I tried to think rationally, taking in calm, measured breaths.
One. A zombie tried to kill me.
Two. I killed it with a broken metal door.
Three. We are going to look for weapons. Wait, that's a good idea!
"We need to find weapons," I told the two siblings jogging beside me, one on each side.
"But we're at a school," Daisuke argued. "Where would there be weapons?"
Miyuki got a thoughtful look on her face. "We could always... Improvise."
Daisuke ran a hand through his brown hair, "You just love to improvise, don't you, Miyu-chan?"
She smiled at her brother, "Of course."
"Let's find a janitor's closet or something. Maybe there'll be something there," I suggested.
Miyuki nodded as we reached the top floor of the school and started down the hall to the staircase. She glanced at me sideways, "How'd you know that... Thing was there anyways?"
I hadn't really thought about it. I knew I had good intuition, but I never really thought about why. I shrugged, "I don't know. Sixth sense, maybe?"
Daisuke laughed, "I think you've been reading too many paranormal fictions, Sakura-san."
I winced, "Could you call me Akari, please?"
He raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything, nodding instead. Miyuki let out a stifled laugh and we turned to face her. "What?" her brother questioned.
"Nothing. I was just thinking about something funny is all."
I gave her a suspicious glance, but didn't comment. We eventually made it to the first floor and ducked under the stairs, easily locating the janitor's tucked-in closet. I was about to open the door when I heard a muffled sob coming from behind the door. I eased it open slowly, only to find a girl sitting on the floor, crying softly. She looked up at me, startled, her large hazel eyes portraying her fear. "Aya-chan? What are you doing here?" Miyuki stepped forward.
"Aya-chan" leaped forward and engulfed the short Miyuki in a hug. "Miyu-san! I was so scared! Something attacked my class and I barely made it out." By this time, the peach-haired girl was sobbing.
Miyuki awkwardly patted the taller girl's back. While they did that, I reached past them to look for some... Improvised weapons. After a minute, I pulled out a broom and a baseball bat that was stuffed in the back. "What's that?" Miyuki asked suddenly, pointing something on a higher shelf.
Daisuke reached over me and pulled the box off. I moodily watched him do so. Why did I have to be short?! Wait... Miyuki is shorter than me. Ha! Dammit this Aya-chan girl is taller than me. I sunk into a corner, sulking about my vertical problem. "Um, Akari-san?" Daisuke glanced at me as he handed his sister the box. "What are you doing?"
"Sulking," I replied.
"Cool!" Miyuki exclaimed. "A nunchaku!"
I glanced over as she pulled out the weapon. "Seems like our moody little janitor was keeping some secrets," Daisuke commented dryly.
"They're special nunchaku," I told them, walking over. "See the engraving."
Miyuki peered at the engraving, "First division champion?"
That's when "Aya-chan" remembered me. "Hello," she said cheerily, surprising me with her sudden mood change. "I'm Kido Ayaka."
I nodded in acknowledgment, "Sakura Akari."
Her eyes widened and I could see them behind her bangs slightly. "You mean the Sakura Akari? The Martial Arts Champion?" she questioned, her voice holding an air of awe.
"Yep," I replied nonchalantly, snapping the broom over my knee. I spun it to get used to the weight of it.
Daisuke did a test swing of the bat and grinned. "Looks like all of those years of baseball with Katsume-kun weren't a waste of time," Miyuki teased.
I raised an eyebrow at the mention of Katsume's name, but didn't say anything. My eyes traveled over to Ayaka, who was completely defenseless against the -and I hate saying this because it seems impossible- zombies. With a huff, I looked through my black messenger bag slung across my shoulder. The others looked over at me curiously. After a moment, I pulled out my very large math book and offered it to her. "Akari-san?" she questioned.
"You need something to defend yourself with," I explained. "I'm assuming you have no prior training?"
She shook her head. "Then take the book," I insisted. "Math isn't my favorite subject anyways."
She grabbed it carefully and I picked up the broken broom. "We should go inform the headmaster," I suggested. "If you see a... Thing avoid it or kill it by smashing it's head in."
They all nodded and we set off again.
I looked down the zombie-crowded administration hall. "There goes that plan," Daisuke mumbled followed by a small 'ow'.
I quietly closed the doors and reached into my bag, pulling out some duct tape. "Why do you have duct tape?" Ayaka asked as I started taping up the doors.
"Never know when you're gonna need it," I grunted before standing up.
A thump resounded and we spun around to see none other than Kyo Asamoto stumbling up and adjusting his glasses. "Um... Asamoto?" I asked, putting the tape away.
He looked at me and grumbled something incoherent. He wandered over, "What the hell is going on?! I was enjoying a nice lunch when this-this thing comes out of nowhere and attacks me!"
Miyuki and Ayaka raised an eyebrow at him while Daisuke and I merely sighed. "We've gotta move," I told him as I pushed by. "I'll explain along the way."
He watched the rest of us walk by before hurrying after us. I paused in front of the nurse's office. "What is it?" Daisuke asked.
"Maybe we should grab some medical supplies," I mused absently before pushing the door open.
"Are you sure you're okay?" I heard Ellis' voice echo from the farthest corner of the office.
Surprised, I walked over and peered around the curtain. Ellis fussed over Sensei Raphael, who was holding some gauze up to his eye. "What the hell happened to you?!" Miyuki exclaimed and I sighed. Real smooth there, Usui.
They glanced over at us, startled. "What happened to your eye, Sensei?" I asked.
He blinked with his one good eye. "We were attacked," he explained then took in the blood on our uniforms. "I see you were too."
"We dealt with it," I said. "Right now, we should check out your eye."
I grabbed some gauze and bandages and Ellis stepped aside. Were they together when they were attacked? And if so, why? I quickly began dressing the bleeding wound. "How do you know how to do stuff like this?" Daisuke asked, handing me some more bandages at my request.
"My dad hurts himself a lot," I answered.
Once I was done, Sensei looked at us. "Did you tell the Head?"
"Administration hall is blocked," I replied, washing my hands in the sink. "Zombies swarming the area."
"Zombie, hmm? Yes, that is what they appear to be..." he looked at me. "Why weren't you in third hour?"
I chuckled nervously, "Well, you see, I-"
"We don't have time for this!" Ellis exclaimed abruptly. "We need to figure out what to do."
"The police will come get us," Kyo said, more to himself than to to us.
The nurse's television suddenly turned on and we all jerked over to look at it in surprise. Miyuki glanced up from the remote in her hand, "What? I thought we should check out the news..."
Ellis marched up and snatched the remote out of her hand, "You scared the hell out of us, Usui!"
While the two other girls argued, I looked at the T.V. A local reporter stood on top of a building somewhere in Tokyo, which was overlooking a large traffic jam. "-And all exits in and out of the city are being monitored in an attempt to quarantine the area."
"Not good..."
I glanced at Daisuke, who had suddenly appeared next to me. "The city is going to fall into chaos soon," I agreed.
He was about to add something else when a loud crash echoed through the school, shaking the building. We all grabbed onto something nearby and for me, that just happened to be Daisuke. When the jolting stopped, I pulled away and prayed my face wasn't as red as it was hot. "S-sorry..." I mumbled.
"Guys..."
We all turned towards Ayaka, who was leaning out the window. She turned to face us, fear in her barely visible eyes, "I think that was an explosion in the West Wing. The school's on fire."
"Dammit!" I yelled as I yanked open my bag. "Quick, stuff all of the supplies you can find in here and stuff it into any bag you can find."
I threw all of my school stuff -except for my sketchbook, journal, pens and pencils, and current novel- onto a nearby gurney. "Are you okay to move?" I asked Sensei and he nodded, standing up. "Make sure to get painkillers!" I told Kyo, who was throwing medicines into his large, empty bento box.
Miyuki was stuffing rolls of bandages and gauze into a random backpack from the Lost-and-Found while Daisuke was emptying the nurse's cooler where she kept fresh water for dehydrated students. Ayaka and Ellis filled up another Lost-and-Found backpack with graham crackers and fruit snacks. Kyo handed me his bento box and I stuffed it into my bag. "Let's hurry," I said and we were getting ready to leave when the door flew open.
For a moment, everything was deathly quiet as the smell of smoke filtered into the room. After a few seconds of me holding my breath, a zombie wandered inside, followed by two more. I twirled the broken broom in my hand as it approached before swinging it as hard as I could. When it impacted with the zombie's skull, there was a cracking sound and it slumped to the ground. "Akari!" Ellis exclaimed and I narrowly avoided a pair of rotting teeth as Daisuke's baseball bat slammed into the zombie's head.
Miyuki slammed one side of her nunchaku against the last zombie's face. "C'mon," I urged and grabbed a stunned Ayaka's hand.
We raced out of the nurse's office. I ran in front and everyone followed me at an even pace. Somehow, I had managed to completely avoid the smoking or burning areas. We finally reached the main hall, where the teachers were filtering students out. I immediately realized that they had no idea what was going on. We should tell them... "There's no time," I heard Daisuke say next to me as if he were reading my mind.
I nodded in agreement and we easily avoided the teachers, racing to the gym instead. As we approached it, the doors were suddenly flung open and Katsume fell out. He scrambled to close the door behind him before realizing us. He was obviously scared to death with his blood-soaked clothes, a baseball clamped tightly in his hand. "S-something..."
Daisuke helped Katsume up, "We know. Are they in there?"
Katsume nodded and looked over our group. "We should barricade the door," Raphael suggested.
"With what?" Kyo asked incredulously. "There's nothing here that we aren't using as a weapon."
I glanced around, searching for something. "There!" Ellis and I exclaimed at the same time, pointing to a trophy case.
Daisuke looked at it and nodded, "Help me move this, guys."
Katsume and Raphael pushed against the case while Daisuke pulled. In a few minutes, the large wooden structure was blocking the door. The smell of smoke had gotten stronger and we were coughing by this time. I covered my mouth and followed Daisuke, who was motioning to the back doors. We burst out into the bright sun, but didn't pause in hurrying away from the burning building. I looked around. We were in the back of the school, with the baseball field and basketball court. And... I glanced to the right; bingo. "Anyone know how to hot wire a bus?" I questioned and Miyuki's hand shot up eagerly.
Daisuke rolled his eyes at his sister, while Kyo gasped in what seemed like horror. "Where the hell did you learn to do something like that?!" he exclaimed.
"Well, last year-" Miyuki started.
"No time!" I exclaimed. "Get on the bus."
They all nodded and we piled onto the school bus, which belonged the visiting volleyball team. I slammed the doors shut as Miyuki slid under the panel. A few long, tense moments passed before the engine rumbled to life. Raphael slid into the driver's seat and carefully went over the safety precautions. There was a slamming sound, which made me swing my head around to look at the busted doors. "Go!" we all screamed at our teacher and his foot slammed down on the gas pedal.
We jerked back in our seats as he navigated himself to the front of the school. My mouth flew open in horror while I watched my fellow classmates and teachers trying to fend off the zombies that had filtered into the front courtyard. The monsters looked over at us mindlessly and I looked in front of us, seeing the school's gate approaching us. "We're going to crash!" Kyo cried. "We're all going to die!"
"Not today," Raphael said, pushing down the pedal even farther.
The bus slammed into the gates and my head whipped back as I tried to keep my footing. Unfortunately, I slipped, landing in Daisuke's lap. "S-sorry," I muttered as I slid into the seat next to him. "Hold on!" Raphael shouted as he turned sharply onto the main road.
The cherry blossoms floated to the ground around us as the bus sped down the street. "Stay in back alleys!" I told Raphael.
He nodded and I looked at our ragtag group. A princess, a jock, a bad boy, a possible terrorist, a otaku, a teacher, a scared shitless girl, and a loner. My head dropped; I definitely wasn't ready for this. We were doomed.
Well, review, favorite, follow. Whatever it is you do. I'll try to update more often, but no promises. ^_^
