Author's Note: Oh my gosh, it really has been a long time since I've updated. I just got three emails about activity on this story and I realised "Oh shit it's been a long time!". I've been really in the dumps for the last... almost a year. It has been almost a year since I updated ^ Agh!
This chapter has been lying in my notebook for months now, and I'm just now typing it out (on my phone, so sorry for any mistakes). btw sorry that my writing is comparable to a toddlers
I walked into the school pretty excited, I'd really missed the normality. Matthew stood somewhat awkwardly at my side, I'd heard mom telling him to try and stay with me as much as possible. I know she was just looking out for me, but I wasn't a big fan of being treated like a toddler.
"Hey Alfred!" I looked to the source of the voice, grinning when I realised who it was, Gilbert. I was lucky I had good people skills, I managed to make plenty of friends. "How come you were gone a whole week before break?" Gilbert asked "It was soo boring here!" He whined out. Matthew tensed up, nervous about how that question was to be answered. "I was sick" I answered casually, and the matter wasn't pressed anymore.
"Did anything big happen while I was gone? Any fires, explosions?" I joked. "No, but I'll make sure you're sorry for leaving us alone while you got an extra week of break!" He replied. "Sorry! I'll make sure it doesn't happen again" I said in sarcastic apology.
I sat in my usual spot for home room, but today Matt sat next to me. I wondered what'd take to get him to lay off. Knowing how obedient he was to our parents I knew it wasn't gonna be very easy.
The class went by pretty uneventfully. Ya know, pretty school-y. There was a new kid, he's from England I think. He has that kind of accent, just judging from how his voice sounded when he started cussing out Francis. It was an easy assumption that Francis had tried to flirt with the new kid. That seemed to go over pretty well. Then the bell rang and it was off to first hour, where we were actually expected to do stuff. I cry ;-;.
I really did like science, but I didn't like the teacher. "Turn in your work you should have done over break" he sounded like he hated his job. I raised my hand hesitantly. He gave a side glare to me "Yes, ?" He asked, but it sounded like he was daring me to ask a question. "I was gone the week before break" I explained, hoping he'd just give me the assignment and that would be the end of it.
"And?" He asked, sounding extremely fed up with me. "I never got the work we were assigned" I reiterated what I'd said first. He looked extremely pissed, "How is that my problem?" He said, going back to entering stuff on his computer. "I was gone the whole week! I didn't know we'd been assigned anything! Can I at least know what the assignment is so I can turn it in?" I spoke out quickly, I didn't care how strict he was as a teacher, it was in no,way my fault I was gone. "Well you should not have been gone then, or at least have asked one of your peers for the assignment" he said with an irritated tone. "It was activity fifty seven. Have it in by Wednesday. I'm subtracting forty percent, every day it's late I'm taking away another ten percent" he added. I didn't say anything back. I knew it wasn't possible to haggle down the offer any more.
The whole morning was boring as fuck. Mom had made Matt give the office a note pretty much begging them to have me and Matt in the same classes. I didn't expect them to actually do anything about it, but in fourth hour I was dragged down to the office. Of course that most wonderful journey included staring at a depressing, bland wall for ten minutes. They really should decorate some more. It is a learning environment, not a prison.
"Alfred?" One of the office ladies called my name. I jumped, having been pulled out of my wonderful thoughts about walls so suddenly. "This way" she said turning and walking farther through the office. As we walked farther through the office I started to think why they even needed to have the office so huge. Like, what the fuck do they use all those rooms for?
The lady finally stopped at one of the doors. She knocked, which was followed by a man's voice telling her she could come in. The lady opened the door for me. "Sit down" the principle said gesturing to the seat across from his desk. I took a seat, I was super anxious. I knew I wasn't in trouble, but just being there made me feel like it.
"We got the note from your mother. Now what we're going to do is move you to honours classes. So your schedule can be as similar to your brother's as possible." He explained " Your grades are good enough for you to be put into honours and you would have been put in anyways if it hadn't been too full already. Since your situation is rather special we're making this exception." He finished his full explanation.
Fuck. I tried to hide how much I hated them all for actually listening to parents. Like Jesus, you finally listen and it had to be this time. I tried to focus on the positive fact that I would now have a different science. Other than that there was pretty much no benefits to the schedule change. "Yeah. Thanks" I said, ready to just go.
I awkwardly walked into fifth hour. If you've ever had to walk into a class late you know that really uncomfortable feeling of standing out. I looked at who was in it, no one I really knew too well. I mean, aside from Matt of course. I noticed the British (or whatever) kid from earlier was there too. I don't know why I noticed him, of all people.
"Hi Alfred" Matthew spoke so quietly I honestly wondered how he had a social life. Oh yeah... he doesn't.
I sat next Matthew, that's what he'd want me to do anyway. I sighed, resting across the desk. Something moved in the corner and I reluctantly brought my gaze towards it. The shadow like creature lacked the little familiarity I'd expected with my hallucinations. I stared at it, surprised when it smirked at me.
Matthew instantly nudged my arm. I must have shown something was bothering, or maybe it was just cause he's so perceptive. "Are you all right?" He asked, concerned. "Hmm... Yeah, I'm fine" I said, looking back towards Matthew. I shot him my "I'm totally fine" smile I'd mastered in order to get my mom to calm the fuck down. Instead of him saying a casual 'okay' or something, I was surprised to see him glaring at me with an unamused expression. "Yeah. Keep saying that Alfred. See how much that helps you" he said angrily. It was so rare for him to get mad, and it was kinda scary, honestly. I responded with a confused stare, but if he had noticed he didn't care.
The bell rang and the class settled down. Oh wait, it didn't need to settle down because this class consisted of all the party poopers of the school. The teacher walked into the room and came up to my desk. "Welcome to our honours class Alfred. I'm Miss Pipp." She introduced herself. She seemed pretty nice. "We've worked on pages 189 through 200 before you joined us. You don't have to do them, but it would be a wise decision to look over them so you have an idea what we're doing in this unit" she said handing me the blue math book.
She explained a bunch of math stuff to the class, and honestly I had completely drifted from reality and was staring at the... thing (?). It was so weird, and different. It didn't talk or anything. Probably should be glad about that.
Matt tapped my arm and I quickly turned back to him. He sighed, re-explaining the assignment and saying that we had partners for the project. My partner was 'Arthur Kirkland". Apparently that was the name of the British (?) kid (seriously what the fuck is he? I gots to know now).
I sat next to this 'Arthur' and gave a friendly smile. "Hi" I greeted. "Hi..." he said back, sounding grumpy. "How are you?" I asked, persisting on making conversation with him even though he was acting like a total grumpykins. He looked up from his paper and glared at me. "Fine...I guess?" He answered, expressing his irritation with his tone of voice.
"Oh. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" I asked as I opened up my book and started to write down the heading. He never answered my question. Rude!
He looked up at me, looking severely annoyed. OH! Haha! I'd said that out loud, hadn't I? I started laughing. He scoffed, and went back to his paper. Once I could control my laughter I directed my attention back to working. "Isn't this supposed to be a partner thing?" I asked . He sighed (he seems to do that a lot), and looked away from his paper. "Yeah, sure. I'll do one through three, you can do four and five" as soon as he finished talking he went back to his paper.
I finished the problems and I let him write down the answers I got, and then he handed me back the papers to write down what he'd gotten for one through three. As I wrote down the answers, Arthur's voice interrupted my writing. "Are you alright?" He asked. I looked at him confused. I was about to ask what was wrong but then I noticed the red stains I'd left on his paper. "Oh shit! I'm sorry!" I sputtered out, standing up quickly. In the process I managed to knock over my book, bringing most of the class's attention to me. I didn't know that some reopened cuts could bleed that much.
"Are you alright?" Arthur asked again. His eyes were huge and his previous grumpy expression was replaced with a serious and concerned one. He seemed really concerned about me. "Ah... Could I go to the bathroom to wash my arm off. I scraped it!" I asked the teacher while I pretended to laugh. I did a really bad job at that.
When I came back Arthur seemed calmer. Though when I sat down he still looked at me with concern. He looked like he wanted to ask, but instead he just went back to his work.
Nothing was really said until he looked up and tapped me. "Hmm?" I acknowledged him. "You...cut?" He asked quietly. My eyes widened. I hadn't expected to be asked that. I could see him thinking I might have cut, but I didn't think he would actually ask me that. "Oh" was the only thing I said. He sighed, but it wasn't an annoyed sigh. The bell rang and he got up as though nothing had happened. Before he left though, he turned to look at me. "Please stop" he asked pleadingly, and left. The look in his eyes seemed really hurt. I stared into the hall. What?
