Lee Everett awoke from his troubled, silent slumber to the sound of someone's voice.
"Good morning, ya'll." The person said.
Clementine sat up and yawned. Lee opened his eyes and saw the person in front of them.
The person was some white guy with dark hair and a cool mustache. Lee was a little jealous of it, yet for some reason, he felt compelled to do something...
"I'm itchy..." Clementine complained.
"Well, little lady, that's 'cause you slept in a barn! Lucky you don't have spiders in your hair!" The man said in an optimistic tone.
Clementine gasped and started clawing at her hair as the man chuckled.
"I'm sure your daddy scared them all away." The man looked at Lee.
Lee shrugged meekly. "I'm not her dad."
Clementine's jaw dropped as she glared at Lee.
The man seemed confused by her reaction. "Uh... Well... My name's Kenneth, but everyone just calls me Kenny."
"I'm Lee. This is Clementine." Lee said, gesturing to Clementine, who was fuming with anger and surprise.
"Come on, I'll introduce you to my family." Kenny smiled warmly at Lee before he walked out of the barn.
Lee didn't realize it, but he was smiling too.
Clementine noticed, but didn't really comment on it. "Are you going to talk to me now?"
Lee said nothing.
Clementine nearly screamed.
Lee and Clementine walked together out of the barn after Kenny, who had slowed down a little for them.
"See that woman over there?" Kenny pointed to a blond woman sitting in front of the porch.
Lee nodded.
"That's my wife, Katjaa."
Clementine noticed that Lee seemed troubled by some part of that statement.
"Our son is Kenny Jr., but we like to call him Duck."
"... Duck?" Lee asked timidly.
Before Kenny could explain, Duck started quacking. Kenny hung his head in shame.
"It's a long story."
Duck flapped his arms over to Kenny with this ridiculously happy face.
"Duck, why don't you go sit on the tractor?"
"QUACK!" Duck flapped around the corner of the house and disappeared.
Kenny took Lee and Clementine to Katjaa, who smiled a little.
"Katjaa, this is Lee and Clementine." Kenny introduced them.
Katjaa looked at Clementine with a warm smile. "That's a pretty name."
Clementine seemed abashed. ".. Thanks."
Katjaa looked up at Lee. "It's nice to meet you, Lee."
Lee simply nodded in response.
Katjaa looked at Kenny. "Not one for talking, is he?"
Kenny shrugged and rubbed the back of his neck. "He seemed a bit talkative before..."
Katjaa shrugged it off. "Well, Clementine can sit here with me while you two work."
Kenny nodded. Lee gestured Clementine to sit next to Katjaa.
Kenny started walking towards the truck in the front yard. "Well, Lee, I have to start fixin' up my truck. Maybe you should go ask that Hershel guy what you can do to help out."
Lee shrugged. He walked to Shawn instead, though.
Shawn looked back at Lee. "Oh, it's you. Uh, could you help me out? I need some more wood cut."
Lee stood there quietly.
"I'll take that as a 'sure'..."
Lee got out a hacksaw and a plank of wood and started cutting it.
Shawn thought about starting a conversation with the man, but shook his head, knowing he wouldn't get a response other than silence or a death glare.
After about five minutes of awkward silence, Shawn got fed up. He turned back to face Lee. "I think that's enou-" He stopped.
Lee had only cut a single plank in half.
When he was finished helping Shawn, Lee went over to Kenny.
"Hi, Kenny." He made himself say; he still wasn't very used to speaking at even inside-voice.
"Hi, Lee. I see you're more willing to talk now."
Lee shrugged. "M-... More or less..."
"Did you talk to Hershel?"
Lee shook his head.
Kenny put his wrench down and looked at Lee with a blank smile. "You know what? I need to come up with a nickname for you."
Lee stared at Kenny quietly.
"Hm... Ah! I know. I'll call you Silentlee. As in the word silently?" Kenny started to snicker before he slapped his knee and started to laugh.
Lee wasn't sure what to think about the name/pun, but he made laughing noises in the back of his throat so Kenny didn't think that he'd somehow taken offense.
Kenny soon relaxed a little, ignoring the startled stares of Katjaa and Clementine, and got back to work.
Lee opened his mouth a bit. "Uh... So... Where are you and your family headed?"
Kenny glanced over as he kept working. "To the nearest docks from here. Gonna get a boat, but we're gonna stop off at Macon first. ... You know, you and the girl are welcome to come with us if you'd like." Kenny couldn't help but notice that Lee looked troubled. "Something wrong, Lee?"
Lee shook his head. "No. No, I'd... I'd love to go with you, but I'll have to ask Clementine..."
Kenny nodded and did this lip thing that Lee couldn't fathom. "Gotta ask the missus. I understand. Say, have you talked to that Hershel guy yet?"
Again, Lee shook his head.
"He's in the barn. You should go talk to him, Silentlee." Kenny giggled again.
Lee 'quietlee' walked into the barn. Hershel looked over dismissively.
"You gonna talk yet?" The older man asked.
Lee was silent.
Hershel stabbed his eyes out with the pitchfork he held.
Lee remained silent.
Suddenly, Shawn screamed, nearly making both of them jump out of their socks.
"Lee, come quick!" Kenny yelled as he practically threw himself away from his truck and ran to check on his son. And Duck.
Wait, that's not right.
Lee ran over to check on what was going on, but Hershel had effectively blinded himself, so he remained in the barn.
When Lee turned the corner around the house, he saw that some greater force was apparently giving him a choice. Kenny watched in awe, seeming trapped.
Walkers were grabbing at both Shawn and Duck. Shawn was pinned to the ground by the wheel of the tractor, apparently having had his leg run over by Duck. It would probably only be able to save one of them.
Very briefly, Lee looked in Kenny's direction, and then Kenny was running for Duck. Lee figured he could disrupt the plans of this greater force and save Shawn after, so he also ran for Duck. He helped Kenny pull his son free, and then the man with the cool mustache held his son close, stepping away from the walkers.
Lee looked at Shawn right as the walkers took a chunk out of his slender throat.
Hershel ran over, his eyes repaired, and he saw the walkers chomping on his son's throat. He raised his rifle and shot the two walkers, then he stumbled over and fell to his knees next to his dead son.
Lee looked back at Kenny, who stared at him with a scared and guilty expression.
Hershel stood. "Get out. GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE!"
Clementine hid behind Katjaa and stared fearfully at the wrathful Hershel. Kenny lowered his head and kept his gaze averted.
Lee looked at Hershel. "It's not his fault." He said boldly.
"Oh, so now you talk! You talk to defend him!"
Kenny looked at Lee again.
"Yeah, I do. You got a problem with that?"
"Just leave me alone. Get the fuck out of here, and never come back." Hershel slumped back to the ground, defeated simply by the fact that Lee was willing to argue verbally.
Lee looked back at Kenny.
Kenny glanced back at his family and Clementine for a moment. "... You've got that ride to Macon if you want it." He said with a lacking of emotion in his voice as he adjusted his hold on Duck and started to walk back to the truck.
Lee took hold of Clementine's hand, and together they followed Kenny and his family-
-INTO OBLIVION.
I kid.
