Elyan and Merlin were closer than people thought.

Elyan talked to Merlin more than people realised. Just because his father had been executed because of magic, didn't mean he hated magic. He didn't get why those people didn't think he and Merlin were close. Gwen had practically adopted the young man while he was away.
The knight often found the pale man cooking dinner waiting for Gwen to come home. And at some point, Gwen had commissioned a small bed that fit in the cupboard for when Merlin stayed over.
It was strange, it was like having a brother pop up out of nowhere. But that was why they didn't talk much, they simply didn't need to.
Occasionally it'd be joked that Gwen had swapped him out for Merlin but Elyan wasn't jealous. If anything, he was glad that Merlin looked out for his little sister when he couldn't. And when situations switched and Gwen couldn't look out for Merlin, Elyan found himself keeping an eye on the warlock.
It was an odd friendship really. But they were both Gwen's brothers by blood or not. And Elyan swore he would make his new sibling feel as welcome as he could manage.
That had made Gwen smile.
