This is unashamed fluff. I can't help it.
He was just intending to take her slowly around the ice, let her build her confidence, but as he sped up, she smiled more. Pretty soon he was going breakneck speed, spinning her round the ice as she laughed with exhilaration and dizziness. "Stop Gray-sama!" she spluttered eventually, "Juvia will never be able to balance on the ice if you make her so dizzy." Gray had to admit the girl had a point. He gradually slowed them both to a more manageable pace, albeit a little reluctantly. She seemed so much freer when she laughed. "Skating's mainly a confidence thing." he explained, as he guided her along, "You just have to slide one foot over the other. As long as you're not afraid you can keep your balance easily." Although Juvia had started a little tottery, she was becoming surer of herself with every slice of the ice. Soon, she was moving independently, so distracted by the task at hand that she forgot about losing body contact with her beloved Gray-sama.
The moonlight that now shone overhead framed her hair beautifully, making her face appear glowing with ethereal light as the moonbeams reflected off the ice. Not that Gray was paying attention to that. Pleased with her progress he decided to try something a bit more challenging. "Do you want to learn any tricks?" he asked, casually leaning against a low bridge.
"What like, Gray-sama?"
Now, Gray wasn't usually much of a show-off, but with such an eager audience, who could blame him? He started off with a few spins, which moved into arabesques and jumps and cantilevers and a butterfly jump. If the Grand Magic Games had had a figure skating round, Gray would have aced it. "That looked very impressive, Gray-sama, but Juvia doesn't think she could quite manage to skate like that." She looked down at her boots again. This time it was Gray's turn to be embarrassed.
"Sorry, I guess I got a little carried away." Juvia giggled. It was such a pleasant sound, like a brook in springtime, up in the mountains. Gray couldn't help but smile too. "Juvia does think she might be able to try a spin." she offered, a little hesitantly.
The next half hour was spent making Juvia very dizzy indeed. At first she was upset when she fell, complaining that "Gray-sama made it look so easy!" Which was true, but she had never seen his first attempts. Bruises weren't the half of it. Eventually she could manage a passable spin, her natural grace making up for any lack of finesse. "That's really good Juvia! You're a natural." And naturally such praise from her beloved made her dizzier than the skating. Before she could get into fantasising though, she remembered what Cana and Erza had said. They had sat her down one morning in Fairy Hills, and had explained patiently that whilst her attempts to win Gray over were admirable, and they would not discourage her for all the world, she might have more success if she eased up on the fantasies. "Just when he's actually talking to you." added Erza. Juvia knew Erza was very wise, so instead of saying something about their wedding, or future children, she simply replied "Juvia thinks it is her teacher who must take the credit." Gray was a little disarmed. Those eyes again, shining up through her eyelashes. If she tried it in battle he was pretty sure it would count as cheating. "Don't be silly." He muttered, hands in his pockets, "Hanging out with charcoal face must have addled your brain."
"Juvia thinks we might have to agree to disagree." She grinned mischievously. What had gotten into her today? He was pretty sure she wasn't usually this bold and confident. Not that he was complaining. It was then that he noticed her lips were starting to approach the colour of her hair. Idiot! She must be freezing! How could he not have noticed? "Juvia, you're obviously getting cold. I think we should call it a night." He looked around for his coat, to wrap around her shoulders, since her need was obviously greater than his. "Here it is Gray-sama." She had guessed what he was searching for. He had been wondering who had been collecting his clothes and leaving them in neat piles next to him. He made a note to thank her later. He put it round her shivering form, and walked her back to her dorm. "Juvia is sorry she couldn't stay out with you longer" she said, looking thoroughly disheartened. "Don't be silly Juvia, it's no good you getting hypothermia or frostbite or something." She smiled sadly at him. Damn his soft heart. "Besides, you can skate with me again tomorrow." The words just slipped out. The effect on Juvia was immediate. She hugged him tightly, "Thank you Gray-sama! You make Juvia so happy!" He tried to prise her off gently, so she couldn't see his grinning face. She'd never let go then. "See you tomorrow Juvia." He waved to her as he sauntered back to his own house, realising, to his surprise, that he was actually looking forward to it.
He didn't see the swarm of eager female guild mates watching him leave from the upstairs window (everyone sans Wendy, who had been disappointedly sent to bed hours earlier). He didn't hear them either, which is surprising, quite frankly, since the squealing could have caused a minor avalanche. Although Cana later claimed that that was entirely coincidental. We'll just have to take her word for it.
