Here's another chapter! Yeah, it's short *sheepish smile* Last chapter was about 1,250 words, this one is about 600. But I wanted to get it up! Anywho, thank you to all who reviewed and favorited!
Here we go!
Astrid's POV:
I glance at Hiccup. He looks sick with apprehension. Maybe he's worried he wouldn't get chosen? He should be. Hiccup knows I am better, even if Berk had forgotten. The strange and quirky boy was constantly at the edge of my thoughts lately. Hiccup was annoying and useless. I would gladly live without him, but I was stuck with him.
Every time I saw him, I got butterflies in my stomach, it was so annoying! And my heart raced, it was terrible! Every day, it seemed, Hiccup burned down a building, broke something important, or made a huge mess. Stoik had even gone so far as to create a "Hiccup Crew." The Hiccup Crew was constantly at the ready with buckets of water and cleaning supplies. The Hiccup Crew is powered by the Vikings of Berk. Every week, ten Vikings are put on the Hiccup Crew. The shifts rotate. It is quite an elaborate system, yet Hiccup knows nothing about it.
Every Viking on Berk knows about it, though Hiccup has never really been a Viking. And he never will be. My shift was next week, and I was dreading it. Being on the Hiccup Crew was more tiring than a regular week and it was extremely tedious to clean it all up to have it messed up again in the future. What amazed me most was how Hiccup never noticed how quickly his messes were cleaned up. He should be more observant; after all, he is the future chief.
Ugh, the day Hiccup becomes chief is the day this village failed. I pulled myself back to the present and focused. This moment would decide the rest of my life. I wanted to be chosen so badly it hurt. Hiccup didn't deserve it. He has been a clumsy, useless, annoying nuisance for years, and with absolutely no training whatsoever, he becomes the village hero. I, on the other hand, have been training since I was five. I had devoted myself to winning this, yet Useless was here to mess things up as usual. Accept there was no Hiccup Crew to clean up the mess if he won. That's what scares me the most, the fact that if it went downhill, there was no way for me to drag things back up. I took a few deep, calming breathes as Gobber gestured to me.
Hiccup closed his eyes in fear, but I kept mine wide open. I would meet my fate head on, eyes open, axe in hand, and standing strong as a Viking should. I wasn't a fearful, sniveling baby like Hiccup who closed his eyes every time the wind blew. I hoped and prayed it would be me. Please, please, please, please, please, please, please be me. Then Gothi shook her head no. With that simple movement, my world collapsed. All I did, all I worked for, all I hoped to achieve, the thousands of hours all came to nothing. I almost collapsed there.
I have spent hours training and then Hiccup lifts a finger for the first (and probably last) time and everyone leaps up and worships him. "All because he's the chief's son." I thought bitterly. I watched sadly as he was carried away. At first, he seemed miserable. What? So he doesn't even want this! But then he smiles and acts excited. Maybe he was just shocked. But the smile never reached his eyes. Deep down, I knew something was off. I started towards my house; shoulders slumped in defeat while I listened to laughing and cheering. I entered and collapsed on my bed. I feel asleep immediately to the song of my defeat.
Please drop a review! Constructive criticism is much appreciated!
For those of you who are wondering: I don't think I can get a update scheduled. Sorry :'( but my life is beyond busy with Girl Scouts, Band, Homework, and what not. I will try to update as often as possible, hopefully with longer chapters!
