She dropped one of her purchases, a can of pears in sweet sugar syrup. As she turned to pick it up, someone else did before her.
He stood, looked at it for a moment, turning the can over in his hand, seeming to consider the label.
"Sweet." he said, smiling slyly at her. "But not as sweet as you, Dolores."
She did not like the look in his eyes, nor the way that he said it. Too forward, as she did not know him.
"I beg your pardon, sir, but I have never seen you before in my life."
She felt her face grow hot; but a quick sensation brushed her skin, familiar, and that she could not explain.
He handed it back to her and walked away, with a tip of the brim of his black hat.
"Evenin' now."
