Chapter 2: Visions
Jamie, Monty, Claude, Caleb, Cupcake, Pippa and Jack all decided to go camping in the woods. It was late at night and Jack was sleeping above the tents in a large tree. For the first time in a while, he was dreaming about his past.
"Got ya!" Jack jumped and grabbed his little sister, lifting her above his head.
Jack's sister laughed, "Jack put me down!"
"What's the magic word?" Jack laughed at his sister.
"Please!" His sister begged.
Jack smiled, "Good Emma, remember to say please after you ask someone something, it's polite."
Emma nodded, "Okay Jack, I want to be as polite as you one day!"
Jack flashed a goofy smile, "Yeah, sure I don't know how polite I am but thank you."
"Polite? Please, he is nowhere near polite." A girl said as she was walking up to Jack and Emma.
"Hey!" Jack pouted at her.
"Jessica!" Emma ran and hugged the girl.
"Hey sweetie, how are you today." Jessica bent down and hugged Emma.
"Good, Jack was giving me reading lessons earlier today!" Emma smiled. "And teaching me how to write! I'm going to write a letter to Papa!"
Jessica smiled, "I bet he would be so happy to see that you learned how to write." Emma shook her head.
Jack bent down to his sister, "Emmalynn it's getting late, why don't you help mom with dinner? I'm going to walk with Jess for a while."
"Okay!" Emma smiled and looked at Jessica and Jack, she grabbed Jack's hand and then Jessica's hand, putting them together. "Bye!"
Jack smiled and turned at Jessica, "Do you mind if we walk?"
Jessica smiled and leaned into Jack's arm, "Not at all."
"How is your mom?" Jack asked.
"She's well, she loves to talk about you." Jessica smiled.
Jack blushed at her, with her gorgeous brown hair flowing in the wind, and her shining blue eyes dancing in the sun. He wondered how he got so lucky with a girl like her. "How about your dad, does he still hate me?"
Jessica laughed, "Jack we've been together for almost four years now, he thinks of you as his son."
"Then why does he make me do work every time I come over?" Jack whined, "It's not even the manly work, I have to herd the stinking sheep!"
"He always did say to you, 'hard work is the way to win over a women's heart'!" Jessica mocked her father's voice making Jack laugh. "And it worked, no matter how foolish you looked!"
Jack looked at Jess, "Hey! Come on I wasn't that bad!"
Jessica looked at Jack, "Let's sit down right here and watch the sunset through the trees."
Jack sat down and pulled her into his lap, "Sounds like a plan."
They watched the sunset together in silence for a while, Jack stroking Jessica's hair while it blew in the autumn wind. "Jess." Jack cupped Jessica's face as she turned to look at him.
"Do you love me?" Jack asked, staring into her eyes.
"Of course I do." Jessica smiled, staring back into Jack's chocolate brown eyes. "More than anything in this world."
Jack smiled, "Then will you marry me?"
Jessica smiled, tears filling her eyes. She nodded her head, tears falling. "Yes Jackson, I will marry you!"
Jack grabbed her and held her as they both cried into each other's arms. "I-I have loved you for a very long time, Jessica." Jack pulled back and moved hair away from her face, wiping the tears from her cheeks. "I can't imagine a world without you, and I want to make sure I spend the rest of my days with you." Tears fell from Jack's face and Jessica wiped them. He closed his eyes and leaned into her touch. "We can start a family." He opened his eyes again to look at her smiling. "Would you like that?"
"Of course I do!" Jessica smiled. "I'll be ready to do anything with you, but before we get married, I want your father to be there."
"He won't be back until spring," Jack stated.
"That's okay, I want your father to see the man you have become." Jessica laughed. "We grew up together and our parents were always around us."
Jack kissed her hand, "Then we will wait to be married in the spring."
Jack leaned and kissed her lips, smiling as she kissed back.
Jack opened his eyes, hearing something walking below him. It was Jamie, he was out of his tent, walking towards the woods. "What are you doing?" Jack called, his voice sounding like he has been crying.
Jamie jumped and looked up, relaxing to see it was only Jack. "I have to pee like a racehorse."
Jack laughed and pointed towards the woods, "Well the woods are the largest toilets in the world."
Jamie thought for a moment, "I thought that was the sea."
Jack pondered for a moment. Both technically were, "Well I wouldn't know, I'm terrified of large bodies of water."
Jack let Jamie do his business and watched the night sky, the stars were really clear.
After Jamie was done, he climbed the tree and sat next to Jack, he looked at Jack's face and realized how sad he looked. "Hey, what's wrong."
Jack looked at Jamie, and noticed the worried look on his face, "Nothing."
Jamie put a hand on Jack's shoulder, "Jack look, you are around people now, people who care about you. You don't have to keep what's troubling you inside anymore."
Jack's eyes widen, and looked at Jamie, he was right. What's the point in locking everything up inside when he has people that he can talk to? "I remembered something from my past again."
Jamie nodded, "Was it about Jessica."
Jack sighed, "Yeah," Jack curled up into a ball, putting his chin on his crossed arms. "I was going to marry her Jamie. We where to be married in the spring. But that never happened because I fell through the ice... I did what I never wanted to do, I left her, sad and alone." Jack laughed sadly, "I'm never going to find a girl like that again."
"You never know that," Jamie said. "There may be some girl out there waiting for you, the one who you can spend forever with. You just got to find her."
Jack sighed, "Yeah well, I don't want to."
Jamie gave Jack a sad smile, "I understand." They sat in silence for a while. "Hey is it okay if I go back to bed, I'm tired."
Jack laughed, "Yeah, you don't have to stay up because of me, I'm going to fly around a bit anyway."
"Okay, night Jack."
"Night kiddo."
Jamie rolls his eyes, "I'm not a kid anymore." Jack pushed Jamie off the tree, making him land in a pile of snow, "Jack!" Jamie got up and threw a snowball at him.
Jack dodged the snowball, "Yeah, you are." And flew off with the wind, letting the wind take him wherever it wanted him to go.
The wind tugged at him violently, causing him to fly closer to the forest. Something was out there and he needs to stay alert. Jack spot something between a break in the trees. He gripped his staff tight and flew closer to what it was. As he got closer, he noticed it was a person, laying in the snow unconscious. "Oh no!" Jack rushed over to the person to help. When he landed, he noticed that the person is a young girl, who wasn't wearing the correct clothing for winter. Jack brushed the snow off of the girl's face and gasped. "Sarah?!"
Jack pulled her out of the snow and carried her as she laid unconscious. Jack noticed how light she is but decides to not worry about how much the girl eat, she needs to get someplace warm. She was far from any homes so the quickest way to the tents.
As Jack flew in the air with Sarah, he tried to protect her from the wind as much as possible. He looked down at her, and his heart began to ache, "You look just like my Jessica," he brushed some snow off her cheek with his finger.
As Jack landed at the camp, he called for everyone to get out of their tents. They all did in a hurry, thinking something bad happened. Pippa looked at the girl in Jack's arms. "Is that Sarah? Quick get her inside, there is a heater in there! Jack rushed into the tent and put her closer to the heater. He wrapped her around with all the blankets Pippa and Cupcake had, hoping that it was enough for her. When he was done, he stared at her unconscious face. He moved a strand of hair away from her face, just like how he did with Jessica. He then began to run his fingers through her hair. Her hair was just as soft as Jessica's. Jack stopped himself and looked down at Sarah in sadness.
"Jack?" Pippa looked at Jack with concern. "You should probably come out now, the heater will start getting to you."
Jack sighed, "yeah, I'll be out in a second." He looked back down at Sarah, "I'm so sorry Jess," he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "I hope you found love again."
Jack stepped out of the tent and intently felt the cold air, making him feel better. He looked at the concerned teenagers. "It will be dawn in a few hours. Get some more rest." He looked at the girls. "Call me if Sarah wakes up." The girls nodded and went back into the tent. Jack went back to the tree that he was sleeping on, but this time, he wanted to stay awake to keep watch. Jack laid on the tree branch, watching the stars and began wondering why Sarah was outside alone at night? Why was she not wearing warm clothes? Suddenly a scream came from the girl's tents, which cause everyone to scream in shock.
Jack jumped from the tree and ran into the warm tent again. Inside was Sarah, sat up straight, screaming her lungs out. "She's having a night terror?" Jack noticed that the girls were trying to calm her down but she kept flinging her arms around, trying to hit them. "Pippa, Cupcake, back away from her!" The two did just that. Jack quickly made a small snowflake with his finger and shot it straight on Sarah's nose. She stopped screaming and put her arms down. She smiled and gold dream sand appeared above her head. She was singing and dancing in her dream. Jack smiled, happy to have at least make her have fun in her dreams.
"Well, this is one interesting night," Cupcake sighed and laid back down on her air mattress.
"Yeah..." Pippa looked back at Sarah. "I hope she is okay."
Jack sighed, " I should ask her about those nightmares she is having...Teenagers don't usually have night might not be a good sign."
Pippa froze and became pale. "Do you think Pitch is behind this?"
Jack pondered, "I don't know, but I should let North know about this girl." Jack turned to leave the tent, "When it's dawn, you guys should get out of here and take Sarah home, one of the boys can carry her."
"Okay, let us know if anything is going on," Pippa said.
"I will," Jack smiled and waved goodbye as he left the tent.
It takes a while for Jack to reach the North Pole, traveling across the world kind of takes a long time. Jack noticed the window to the Globe Room open so he flew in.
"Ah, Jack Frost!" North said in his thick Russian accent. "How are you doing."
Jack smiled, it's been a while since he has seen North, "I'm well." He said but then remembered the reason he came in the first place. "Actually, I got a question. It's about a girl."
"Who is this girl?" North raised his eyebrows.
"Her name is Sarah. Sarah Sutherland, I think that's what Jamie said." Jack paused. "She doesn't believe in me, yet she sees me." North gave Jack a perplex look. "She said that she can see me because she sees spirits. But I never heard of that before. No human can see spirits."
"That's actually not true," North said. "It's very rare, but a child can be born with a gift to see and talk to spirits. People nowadays call them mediums or psychics. But we call them Viden- the Seers. They can have more then just the power to see spirits, they also can summon them if their powers are strong enough. They also can see the future and be able to astral project."
Jack took note of the information North told him. "There's also another thing about her... I found her unconscious in the snow in the woods. I brought her back to Jamie and his friends that were camping near my pond, but she was screaming in her sleep. I had to blow a snowflake on her face just to give her a fun dream... I have never seen someone so scared of a dream... Is it possible that Pitch-?"
"No," North answered, knowing what Jack was going to say. "Well, let's hope not. We defeated him five years ago, no? Sometimes people can have nightmares without Pitch doing something about it."
"That bad?" Jack asked.
North pondered for a moment, "Well, you said Sarah Sutherland right?" Jack nodded and North frowned. "Yes, she used to believe in me, actually one of the kids who were a little too old to believe. She was on Nice List every year. But she saw something that made her change. Something that broke her. She stopped believing in every single Guardian after that."
Jack frowned, he wondered what happened, but he knew it wasn't his place to ask. "Thank you, North."
North smiled, "You're welcome Jackson, my boy!" North gave Jack a small pat on the shoulder. "But keep your eye out there, if it is Pitch, then we need to watch him." Jack nodded and head toward the window. It was time to go back to Burgess.
Sarah heard the sound of passing cars and low music playing in the background. "Hey, I think she is up!" Sarah woke up and saw she was in a small car, she began to panic and remove her seat belt. "Whoa whoa, wait it's us! Pippa and Jamie."
Sarah looked up and saw Jamie looking at her in the rearview mirror, driving the car while Pippa is in the front seat staring at her with concern. "Why am I in your car?" Sarah said, getting frustrated. She looks at Jamie, "And why are you driving, aren't you 15?"
Jamie shrugged, "My parents know I am driving, and I have enough experience so I'm a safe driver."
Sarah put a hand on her head, it was warmer than usual, she began to shiver. "Did you guys kidnap me or something..." Sarah sneezed. "Why am I so cold!"
Pippa and Jamie gave each other a look. "Sarah," Pippa started, "You were found in the woods, covered in snow."
"The woods?" Sarah asked, confused. "I was in my room the whole night."
"Jack was the one who found you," Jamie said. "He was the one who brought you to our camp."
"Hm." Sarah put her head back, putting it on the cold window. "I should thank him." Sarah closed her eyes, her head was killing her. "By the way, how can you two see him?"
"Jack?" Jamie asked, Sarah nodded. "We believe in him."
Sarah laughed. "Oh come on, you don't really believe that he is the Jack Frost from the storybooks, do you?"
"We do," Jamie stated.
"He isn't just a story, Sarah." Pippa looked at her. "He is a Guardian."
Sarah sat up, "Like an angel?"
Jamie laughed, "No, a Guardian of Childhood."
Sarah frowned, "Guardian of Childhood?"
Pippa smiled, "Yeah, there's Santa, The Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and the Sandman. Jack became apart of the Guardians five years ago."
Sarah was studying the two and sat back in her seat, "Okay."
"Okay?" Jamie and Pippa looked at Sarah.
Sarah shrugged, "Hey if you still believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny, I'm not judging. It's good to hold on to belief... It's just hard for me too. Also, it seems like you two are very serious talking about them. So you must be telling the truth."
"Well," Jamie started, "We kind of have a history. When everyone stopped believing in the Guardians, I saved them. I got my friends to believe in them again." Jamie smiled at Pippa.
Pippa smiled back, "Yep, and thanks to him, Pitch was stopped."
"Pitch?" Sarah asked.
"The Boogieman," Pippa explained.
"Oh."
After telling Jamie were to go, they finally got to Sarah's house. "Take care, Sarah. Try to get some rest!"
Sarah smiled as she walked out of the car. "Thanks." When she got into her house, the first thing she did was take ibuprofen and then crawl into bed with her laptop. She was about to watch a Joe Santagato YouTube video until she heard a knock at the window. It was Jack.
"You can come in." She motioned him to come in.
"Um..." Jack began, "Can you open the window then?" His voice muffled behind the window.
Sarah laughed, "Just go through it."
Jack looked confused, "But I'll break your window."
Sarah sighed and got up the open the window for Jack, "You know you can just fly through the window to come in right?"
Jack gave Sarah a look, "I can't just walk through things."
"Really?" Sarah asked. She wanted to see if this was true so she picked up a pen from her desk and threw it at Jack. It bounced off his chest and then fell on the floor. "Whoa. Sorry!"
Jack stared at the pen and laughed, "Told you so."
Sarah laughed, "Thank you for finding me in the snow."
Jack looked up at Sarah, "Why were you in the woods at night by yourself?"
Sarah shrugged, "The last thing I remember was falling asleep in my bed. I must have been sleepwalking."
Jack folded his arms, "And the nightmares?"
Sarah thought for a bit, "I haven't gotten them in a long time but it started up again after... My friend left."
"You're friend?" Jack leaned on his staff.
Sarah nodded, "Yeah we got into a little argument and she got mad. She is usually overdramatic but always comes back... But this time she didn't."
"I'm sure she is fine, just give her a little more time." Jack smiled but then became serious again, he needs to know about her dreams. "So your dreams, what are they about?"
Sarah looked at her feet, "From the dreams I remember, it's pitch black, these dark horses are changing me in the woods." Jack gasped and looked at her with wide eyes. "And this voice, it comes out from the darkness, calling my name trying to reach me."
"It is Pitch!" Jack snarled.
"Pitch, the 'Boogieman'?" Jack looked at Sarah in shock. "Jamie and Pippa told me about him and the Guardians. It was... Unbelievable, no offense."
"Don't believe in Pitch." Jack said, "it's better that way, trust me. But you should believe in the Guardians, they will protect you."
Sarah laughed but then noticed Jack wasn't laughing with her, "oh you guys are really serious." Jack nodded and Sarah continued to stare at Jack. She noticed how good looking he was. With his slim but fit body, white hair and blue eyes. "Pretty eyes." Sarah looked into Jack's eyes, stepping closer to him. Jack winched, Jess used to say that to him all the time to him when they use to be brown. "You're actually pretty hot for a dead guy."
Jack blushed, "u-uh thanks?"
Sarah laughed at his expression, "Sorry!" She said to cover her laugh with a cough. "I kind of have the tendency to say what's on my mind."
"I've noticed," Jack laughed with a still visible blush. Sarah sat down on the edge of the bed, motioning Jack to sit beside her. Jack sat next to her but refrained from looking at her. He can't look at her up close...
"You look really young, how old are you?" Sarah asked.
"17," Jack answered.
Sarah frowned, "Man that's young, that's my age. May I ask how you died."
Jack looked down at the ground, " I drowned."
"I'm sorry to hear that," Sarah put a hand on Jack's shoulder and noticed how he tensed up. "I can help you pass on, there must be something you have to do if you are stuck here."
Jack rose his eyebrows and looked at Sarah in confusion, "Pass on?"
Sarah nodded, "yeah, like walking into the Light."
"Oh," Jack laughed. "I know what you are talking about but no, I don't need help. I'm here to protect the children of this world. I help them have fun. That's my center."
"Your center?" Sarah looked confused.
Jack nodded and smiled, "My center as a Guardian is Fun!"
"That's great!" Sarah beamed.
"Now let me ask you something," Jack said.
"Shoot." Sarah leaned back on her hands and smiled at Jack.
Jack turned to her, a confused look on his face. "How did you find out that you can see and talk to spirits?"
Sarah's face became grim, "I always saw them whenever since I was little. My grandma died before I was born, but I always remember seeing her around. I saw a picture of her one time and told my mom that I see her in the house. She told me that I shouldn't because my grandma is dead. When I drive by cemeteries or old battlegrounds I see them." Sarah sighed, "And there was another thing too. That made me see so many more spirits after it happened." Tears filled up in her eyes.
"Hey," Jack looked at her in the eyes. "If it makes you upset, you don't have to tell me."
Sarah looked at Jack, "For some reason, I feel like I should tell you."
Jack smiled and nodded. "I'm all ears."
Sarah took a deep breath, "Okay. I was 14, and my best friend and I loved going on adventures. One day, we wanted to walk in town. We were about to cross the street until a car was speeding down the road, with no intention of stopping or slowing down." Sarah starts to breathe heavy, thinking back to that day three years ago.
Jack puts a hand on her shoulder, "Sarah you can sto-"
"She pushed me out of the way, and I saw her get hit by the car... Her body, crushing under the tires, her screams, the blood. Her lifeless eyes staring back at me as she lied on the street." Sarah was balling at this point. "And the car kept going!" Jack closed his eyes, he couldn't imagine what it has been for her. "Her name was Amber, and she was like a sister to me."
"I'm so sorry." Jack stared at Sarah. He wanted to hold her, like the way he held Jessica but figured that he shouldn't.
Sarah wiped her tears up and tried calling her breathing. "I had to go to therapy for so long after that. Seeing that, really messed me up. I would get night terrors, panic attacks and moments of depression. It wasn't easy, but this past year, I began seeing her spirit and every day we spend time together... But now she is gone and I don't know where she went. She was acting a little strange before she disappeared."
"What was that?" Jack asked.
Sarah looked up to meet Jack's eyes, "She looked different, almost like she was possessed but," Sarah gave a small laugh, "that's not possible," Jack was silent, he didn't like the sound of that.
Sarah began coughing and shivered, "You're getting worked up," Jack looked at her with worry, "Maybe you should lay down and get some sleep."
Sarah nodded and crawled under her blankets. Jack was turning to leave until Sarah called out to him, "Wait, Jack," Jack turned around. "Can you stay here, I don't like being in the house alone at night."
"Sure thing," Jack said and closed the window.
"Thank you," Sarah smiled as she laid her head down on the pillow. "I guess it would be nice to have a Guardian watch over me."
Jack sat down on Sarah's bay window. "Good night Sarah."
"Night, Jack Frost."
