Chapter 2: Western Air Temple

Kya's POV

"Iroh, do you even have to ask? Of course I would love some tea." I told the kind, old man. He gave a low chuckle and opened the door. Calling out the soldier passing by, Iroh asked him to bring some tea. He then closed the door and turned back to me.

"Did you really steal it?" he asks me. I heard a note of awe in his voice and I nodded. "And you gave it to the- gave it to our friends?"

"No. I tried to but they told me to keep it. Right now it is in a safe place. I need to go get it. I was on my way there when I was captured." I told him.

He looked shocked and then thoughtful. I watched as he stroked his gray beard and looked away in the distance. "Where exactly is it?"

"It's at the Western air temple; safely hidden from everyone. I was on my way to retrieve it when the Captain Zhao captured me." I informed him.

"Why don't we go get it then? I heard that it would open in five years and it's been, what, three already?" he paused. "Now if I could only get Prince Zuko to agree to go to the Temple…" Iroh trailed off and nodded to the bandages that were on the side of the bowl of water. "Better put those on to keep up the disguise of a non-bender."

I nodded and we hurriedly put on the wrapping on my leg and stomach. We just finished when Zuko burst in with a servant behind who was carrying a tea. I inhaled the smell with a deep breath and let it go slowly. The servant quickly set down the tray and left the room.

"UNCLE!" Zuko roared even though we were only a few feet away. I reached for a cup of tea and had it halfway to my lips when the Prince yelled, "We're heading to the Western air temple." Then the fourteen year old boy stormed out.

Iroh and I glanced at each other, "Well that was easier than expected." I laughed at what the General said and raised my cup of tea all the way to lips, taking a sip of the hot drink. I smiled and thought to myself, this journey might not be as bad as I thought it would be.

Three later, I was completely wrong. Although I had gotten new clothes, all of them were Fire Nation colored summer dresses, I still had to fake my injuries and Iroh was trying to get me to reveal my waterbending to heal his nephew. Zuko and I still didn't like each other very much. Every time he saw he would glare with his one good eye and when he turned his back I would make fun of him. And he would give me the worse jobs ever! One time he even gave me bathroom duty. Let me tell you, being the only girl on this ship is not pleasant. Men are disgusting creatures. Anyways, today, for some odd reason, I agreed to heal him with waterbending as long as Zuko didn't know about.

So, currently, I was patiently waiting for Iroh to try to calm the hot headed prince down; and from what I was hearing from outside Zuko's door, it wasn't really working.

"NO! That peasant is not going to be my doctor!" Zuko roared. There was a pause and I figured that Iroh must have been talking. "I don't care if her burns look great! She is a peasant with no training! She would probably make it worse on purpose because she hates me!" I scoffed in disbelief; Zuko actually thought that I would make him worse. To be honest, I hadn't thought of that. I gave a devilish grin as the door opened to Iroh whom had a happy smile on his face.

My shoulders slumped and the smile slid off my face, "He agreed?" Iroh nodded and motioned for me to come inside. "Has he taken the knock-out medicine yet?" At that, the old man shook his head and gave me a hopeful look. "Oh, come on Iroh, you know I don't like when you do your silent pleading," I sighed and shook my head slowly as I walked into the room. "Fine, I'll give it to him."

Iroh smiled brightly and pointed his hand to Zuko, whom was sitting straight on his bed. "Here is the medicine for Prince Zuko." I nodded and Iroh wished me luck as he left the room. I watched him leave then slowly turned on my heels, looking at Zuko. He was glaring at me with all his might and I glared right back at him.

"Here. Take these." I threw the pills to Zuko and he caught them just before they were going to hit him.

The angry prince gave them a suspicious look, "What do these do?"

"They put you into a death like sleep and only your true love can wake you up." Zuko glanced at me in surprised and I rolled my eyes. "Relax, jeez. They put you into a peaceful sleep that you will wake up from in two hours."

"Why do I need them? I thought you were going to help doctor me." Zuko questioned.

I sighed, "I am, but your uncle said you haven't been sleeping very well, and I can only treat wounds; not make you magically fall asleep." Actually, I could with waterbending, but the whole point of the pills was so Zuko wouldn't find out about it.

Zuko rolled his eyes, but took the medicine. He put them in his mouth, threw his head back, and swallowed the two pills. "How long does this take to work?" I giggled as Zuko started to sway.

"Not that long, and I was just kidding about the whole waking up in two hours. You actually won't wake until your true love kisses you. Nighty-night." I gave him an evil grin when he gave me a frantic look. A second later, his eyes rolled back and Zuko fell back onto his bed.

I walked up to the bed and poked him in the side, checking to see if he would wake up. He didn't and I put his feet on his bed, moving his body to the edge so I could stand alongside the bed to heal him.

Closing my eyes, I moved my hands and moments later water gently covered my hand. Using my other hand, I carefully took off the bandage on Zuko's left eye. I gasped and took a small step back. It was horrible, the wound. A small tear escaped my eye and my hand unconsciously traveled to my heart, rubbing my rough skin there.

I shook my head and ignored the hurt in my heart. I put the hand that was covered in water on Zuko's burn and put all my effort into healing it. The water began to glow a beautiful blue color and I felt the burn beginning to get better. I closed my eyes and sweat began to form on my forehead; after a few minutes, I stopped to rest. Five minutes later, I moved the water to heal Zuko again.

I repeated that again and again before Zuko finally began to stir, mumbling words in his sleep. I hurriedly put the water the bowl and gathered fresh wrapping to bandage Zuko's eye. I finished up and slunk back into the chair I was using to rest in. My eyes began to close from exhaustion and I sighed, relaxing into the comfy seat.

Zuko shot up into a sitting position and I jumped up, startled by his sudden movement. I looked over Zuko's face and took in the wild look in his one eye that I could see. He also looked rested, but that was probably because of my waterbending.

The Fire Nation prince ran to the bathroom and started to take off his bandage. I groaned, "I wouldn't do that. I just finished putting that on." He ignored me and kept on going. "Or just finish doing that and ignore me like I'm not even here."

He closed his eye and took off the cover. Slowly, he opened his good eye and gasped, looking at his reflection. Zuko opened his other eye and blinked for a little bit. Then, he raised his hand and touched his burn. I knew what it felt like; rough, but yet it felt smooth and cool under on his fingertips.

Zuko shut his eyes and he squeezed the bathroom counter. I opened my mouth to say something, but before I could Zuko turned around with fire burning in his eyes. He began shooting fire balls at me and I ducked and evaded most of them. The last one skimmed my arm and burned my skin.

I cried out and cradled my burned arm against my chest. With tears in my eyes, I glared at the panting prince who still had smoke coming out of his closed fists. "If this is the thanks I get for helping you heal, I wish I hadn't even agreed." With that, I ran to the door, swung it open and ran out in to the halls.

I heard Zuko call out to me but I kept running all the way to my room. I locked my door and used my drinking water to heal the burn. I sighed at the cool, tingling sensation in my arm. When I was done, I used my wrap that was for my leg to cover the burn. Finishing, I walked to my small cot and fell asleep.

For the next two days, I went through the same routine. Because of my burns that weren't 'healed' yet, my day was very boring: during morning meditations Iroh would come to try to apologize for his nephew's actions, I would eat, I would sleep, I would eat again, I would have training with Iroh at sunset, I would shower, dinner would be given to me in my room, and then I would stare at the stars in the night sky until I became tired.

I looked up from meditating to see Iroh, right on time as usual. "We are here, Kya."

I shot up and exclaimed, "Here as in air temple time?" He nodded and I grinned. Iroh didn't smile back at me.

My smile slowly faded away. Oh, no. I thought to myself. Something is up; Iroh always returns my smile.

"What's wrong?" I asked him worriedly.

He gave me the 'I'm really sorry about this but I can't do anything to change it' look. I groaned and knew what he was going to say before he even said it. "My nephew has declared that you are not to come to the temple with us. The climb would be too steep for you anyways."

I glared at the wall and pouted. "Yes I can. I was trained and how do you think I got there in the first place?"

Iroh looked around for a second before responding, "Waterbending?"

I gave him a playful glare and rolled my eyes, "Come on Iroh, you know that the Northern Tribe doesn't teach that kind of stuff to girls; especially girls that look like me."

The retired general looked down sadly and replied, "Well, I guess you could sneak off the ship once we leave, but remember, you get caught, there is nothing I can do about it." I grinned and ran up to Iroh, giving him a big hug and a little peck on the cheek. The old man chuckled and let go of me, walking out the door.

Sneaking onto the deck of the ship was easier than I thought it would be. I just walked right out of the door; nobody saw me or stopped me. I looked toward the temple and stared at it for a long time; it was just as beautiful as it was three years ago. The buildings were upside down but the statues of important airbenders were carved right into the cliff. I smiled but then looked at the cliff and sighed. I glanced down, taking in my outfit for the first time today, and groaned. I should have known not to let Iroh go shopping for clothes for me. I was wearing a deep red strapless dress that had a cut that went all the way down, starting at my lower thigh and ending at the ground. At least I had my boots; when Iroh had shown me these little sandals, I had refused to even put them in my room.

I walked to the railing and jumped off the ship, hair flying upwards as I fell downward to the river. A few feet from the water, I made it reach upwards and grab me. Then I froze the water into a path to the cliff-side. Gently setting myself down on the ice path, I sucked the water out of my clothes. Then, I ran to the rock wall in front of me.

Grinning, I told myself to thank Iroh when I got to back to the ship. He had given me an idea. I put my hands to my sides and twirled my wrists in circles. The cold water came up to my thighs and began to push me up the cliff.

Upon reaching the temple, I slowed myself down and stopped when my eyes were just above the ground. I glanced around to see if anyone was there and then gasped, franticly twirling my hands to sink down. When my head was a few feet below the edge, I sighed and leaned against the cliff-side. I had seen Zuko and Iroh talking, but luckily, neither was looking my way.

In my mind, I pictured to temple set up. I moved over about 20 feet and then poked my head up to see if my calculations were correct. I was a little off; the building I was using as a shield from Iroh and Zuko was directly in the middle of my face. I shrugged and made the water push me up a little higher.

Putting my hands on the ground, I pulled myself out of the water's grasp and lied down on the rock ground for a few seconds. Then I rolled over on my back and pulled the freezing water out of my boots and dress. I got up and put all the water back into the river before it caught anyone's curious eyes.

I looked around and searched for the familiar passage I hid it in. Not finding it, I walked forward and kept up my guard; just in case one of Zuko's soldiers passed by. After walking for 5 minutes, my eyes finally spotted the passageway.

I looked around for anyone then got down on my knees, pushing forward the rock that opened the pathway up. There was a slight scraping sound as it opened and I winced. Without looking behind me, I ran into the walkway. As it closed with the scraping sound, I grinned and I remembered how I had found it as I walked forward.

Groaning, I set down the heavy object and then slid down the wall. As soon as I had gotten comfortable, I felt something poking me in the back. I scooted off the wall to see what it was. Without realizing it, I had sat down on a fist sized rock. I shook my head and tried to make it over to the side.

It wouldn't budge. I tried again but ended up with the same results. So, I shrugged and scooted over to the side of the rock and began to unconsciously try to move it as my mind began to wander over the events of the past month.

When my hand pulled it to the wall, it gave a little bit. I, not paying attention, pulled it even closer to the wall. Then, quick as a whip, the wall gave away and went upwards. I was leaning my back against the wall, so I was sent flying backwards onto the ground. My head struck the ground hard and I winced in pain.

I sat up, rubbing the aching part of my head and glanced at the wall. It was starting to close so I hurriedly picked up my cargo and tried to crawl into the tunnel. I was too slow and the door rock came back down as I was about to enter.

I glanced at the rock and it was sliding back into its original position. When it was done, I studied it intently. It looked like a regular old rock. So, I grabbed it with unease and pushed it to the wall. It slid easily and the rock door opened upward. I walked into the pathway before it closed and glanced around. The sound of the door being shut scared me and I jumped, almost losing my grip on my precious object.

Calming down, I walked forward into the dark hallway. After about five minutes, I saw that the path was widening. With another two steps, the path turned into a gigantic room full of statues.

When I put my foot down a step, torches began to light up, one by one, counterclockwise. It went upward in a spiral and I could barely see the top, which had statues there as well.

With my nerves already on the edge, I screamed in shock when some insects flew out of nowhere. Shaking my head in shame of myself, I looked around at the room. Besides the creepy, life-size statues, there wasn't much to it. I walked around for a bit and finally spotted a place for my object. In the middle of all of the statues, there was empty spot in which there was a block of stone, a table, and a chair. I set down my object in between the rock and chair.

When I turned to leave, something caught my eye, or should I say someone. Lying on the ground was a skeleton. I screamed and backed away from the decayed person. When my screams finally stopped and my breath went back toward normal, I walked closer to the skeleton to study it. It looked to be at least adult size and was wearing orange and yellow clothes. I quickly got down on my knees because I might have offended the spirit of this person by staring at their bones. I bowed and did a little prayer for them.

As I was walking away, I felt a breeze and shivered. I heard someone whisper, "Thank you." And I whirled around to find the source, but nothing was there. So, I just nodded, did a quick bow, and walked away; just in case of a spirit.

By the time the memory was finished, I had arrived at the room with the statues. I walked around and nodded to every statue I passed. When I passed an airbender, I stopped and looked at the pedestal to see their name. It didn't have a name or makings on it, so I just did a little bow and walked off. I got to the center and everything was just how I remembered it.

I walked forward and grabbed my precious object. I glanced at the skeleton, and walked over to it until I was a few feet away. I then, just as before, got down on my knees in a bow and said a quick prayer. In the middle of the prayer, I felt a breeze and a shiver passed over me.

"I watched over it for you. They told me that you would back and would need advice. So, I am here to repay my debt to you," a woman's voice said. I jumped and glanced up. The voice laughed and said, "Relax, child. I will not hurt you."

The woman was hovering a few feet over the skeleton and I knew that she was the one who had whispered thank you three years ago. The spirit was middle-aged and had on an orange gown with yellow stitching and belt. Her hair was dark brown and went all the way down to her ankles; she was gorgeous. Although she dressed like an airbender, I could tell she wasn't because she didn't have any arrows.

When I finally found my voice, I asked, "Who are you?" My voice cracked and I blushed, looking away.

The woman laughed gently and smiled at me, coming closer. "I am Zaria. And no, I am not an airbender; I am an earthbender."

"But you're dressed just like an airbender. I'm Ky—"

I was cut off by Zaria when she spoke over me. "I know who you are, child. You are Kya, of the Fire Nation and Southern Water Tribe." I gasped and she laughed, "I am a spirit. There is not much I don't know; for example, I know that this Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation is on his way back to his ship."

I bolted up, "Oh no I have to go. I wasn't supposed to leave my room. Thank you so much for this. Good bye!" I went to bow but she stopped me.

"Wait, I almost forgot," she glided quickly over to me, "if you need me just ask." Zaria's ghost like finger touched my forehead for a second and then it was gone. "Now you may leave. Good luck, Kya." With that she faded away and I did a quick bow to her body and left.

I ran all the way back to the edge of the cliff and jumped. I wrapped my arms tightly around my precious cargo and waved my finger in a circle. I held my breath as the water reached up and caught me a few feet before I hit the water. Going completely under the water, I saw the small boat Zuko and Iroh used to get to the cliff-side zooming through the water to the ship.

Still holding my breath, I waterbended myself to the other side of the ship. Then, using the same waterbending trick I used to get to the temple, I reached the deck. Lucky for me, nobody was on the deck yet, because I didn't look before I landed.

My soggy clothes and boots made a squishy sound and I winced. Pulling the water out of everything, especially my hair and boots, I flung the river water back and ran all the way to my room.

Looking around for a hiding spot for my cargo, I spotted my almost completely empty closet and stuffed it under some of my dresses. I had just flopped on my bed for a few seconds when Iroh came into my room.

"Kya?" he asked. I could hear the real question in his voice. I sat up and looked at him with an innocent expression on my face.

"Yes, Iroh? Did you guys find the Avatar?" I asked politely.

He shook his head sadly, "No, but it seems that it has only made my nephew more into his search." He closed the door and studied me. "Did you get it?"

I felt a grin spread across my face slowly and I nodded. I couldn't keep it a secret from Iroh any longer. "Do you want to see it?" The White Lotus member nodded. "Go sit on my bed; I'll get it out."

I got off the bed and walked slowly to my closet. I heard my bed squeak as Iroh sat down. I reached under the pile of clothes and got out the object I had risked everything for.

Turning around, I slowly uncovered the black cloth over it. Iroh and I both gasped at its beauty. It was a deep blue color and about as big as Iroh's head.

"It is more beautiful than I thought it would be. They were right for you to keep it. Look how it glows slightly in your hands. This is truly magnificent." Iroh said quietly.

Iroh was still in shock because in my hands, I held the very last dragon egg.

A.N- Gasp! How many of you guys saw that coming? Cause I sure didn't.
