In a Character Sketch, an author uses all of the tools at his or her disposal to create for the reader a vivid portrait of a character. As a sketch, it does not have to use all of the elements of a story. Rather, it uses the various methods of characterization to create a strong sense of what the character is like as a person.

Assignment Requirements:

300 word minimum. (That's about a single page, typed, 12 point font, double spaced (in MS Word, use Format Paragraph to change line spacing).

Creative Title, centered at top of sketch.

Work with a character you know well, even if you don't actually know the person.

Describe the person in a scene that captures something essential about him/her.

Must include correct use of the 6 characterization strategies – written in margins in your draft.

Work to establish a single overall trait in the character.

Use vivid details to make the character come to life.

Use sharp imagery to make the reader feel as if he/she is there.

Avoid derogatory or hurtful information or examples.

Work with paragraph and sentence structure in mind, and proofread your work for grammatical errors.
