When I woke up the next morning Jimmy wasn't in bed. I threw on my robe and started up the steps for a cup of coffee. Before I reached the top, I heard Jimmy and Kimmy in the kitchen.
"I can't believe it actually worked," Jimmy said.
"Me either. Honestly for weeks I didn't think I was pregnant. But I saw how devastated Stephanie was so I went to the doctor to make sure," Kimmy said.
"Yeah, she was pretty crushed. Hey um Kimmy, can I ask you something you may or may not know the answer to?"
"Sure kid. I mean I can try my best to answer you."
"Do you think this has anything to do with Steph's mom?"
As soon as he asked this question I stumbled from trying to keep my balance at the top of the steps.
"Why don't you ask her yourself. Steph get in here."
Busted. I hung my head because I knew he was right. I missed my mom more than I cared to admit most of the time.
Instead of the kitchen I made a run for the backyard. I was so glad Max, Jackson, and Ramona had school. I went to one of the benches and sat down.
"Oh, no. I said something wrong, didn't I?" Jimmy asked sitting next to me and putting a hand on my knee.
"No. You know me better than I know myself, which is crazy."
"I don't think it's crazy Stepho. I love you and I'm here for you."
I looked up to see Kimmy standing off at a distance.
"I love you too and you're right. This has a lot to do with my mom. Hey, Do you think I could talk to Kimmy alone? You have your photoshoot, but I'll see you later," I kissed him on the cheek, then he got up and went inside.
Kimmy came over quickly. "Hey squirt. I'm the one pregnant with your kid. I should be the emotional one."
"I know. It's just this really does mean the world to me," I said tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
"You know I've never really seen Jimmy so invested in someone, like he is with you. He really loves you kid."
I smiled. "Yeah, he does. So, what did the doctor say? How far along are you."
Kimmy laid a hand on her stomach. "Well I'm only 4 weeks along, but there is a baby growing."
"Sorry for being so emotional. Between Jimmy basically giving up his life for me and you actually getting pregnant it's a little much."
"Jimmy is pretty genuine when he knows what he wants. If he didn't love you he wouldn't be here. He would have stopped by and left."
"I know," I said with a chuckle. "Who would have thought I would fall in love with your little brother."
"Yeah and who would have thought I would get pregnant with my brother's kid."
"Oh, that sounds so wrong."
"Yeah, it does, but you two are worth it."
"Aww that's so sweet Kimmy. Hey, lets get out to the cold and inside. I need my coffee."
Jimmy's Point of View
A few weeks later, Kimmy was about 8 weeks along and starting to feel pregnant. Today Steph was rehearsing with Girl Talk, so I gathered Kimmy, DJ, and Mr. T aside in the living room.
"Jimmy what's going on? You didn't get another job somewhere not in California did you?" Kimmy asked.
"No, but I did meet someone amazing."
"Excuse me?" DJ exclaimed.
"Calm down guys. I'm talking about Steph."
"Oh good. I thought I did all of this for nothing. Well not nothing." Kimmy said rubbing her belly.
"Kimmy!" Mr. T exclaimed.
I began pacing back and forth trying to gather my thoughts.
"Jimmy, you know she'll be back soon, right. Now what did you call us in here for?" Kimmy asked.
"Uhh she's going to rip my head off if she finds out I know this. Well I kind of found something the other day." I said slipping into the kitchen. I pulled out a small box from a tall cabinet none of the girls in the house could reach.
I noticed Mr. T's eyes light up when I came back in the room. "I found this under her bed and it explains a lot."
As I opened the box, I didn't hear Steph come into the room behind me.
"Jimmy, what are you doing with that?" She asked with a trembling voice.
Uh oh, this couldn't be good.
"Sweetie, it's not what it looks like." I tried to reason. In front of me Kimmy, D.J., and Mr. T were no help as they inched their way out of the room.
"Uh it looks like you're going through my personal stuff," Steph said examining the box.
I hung my head. "Well yeah, but I found something and uh I should leave shouldn't I?"
"If you want to come back tonight, I think that's best," she said motioning toward the kitchen door.
Kimmy grabbed my arm as soon as I left Steph and walked shamefully toward my old house. "Jimmy, what did you do?!"
"That was her past and future box, and had some personal stuff about her Mom in it. I want to do something special but…" I paused when I heard soft sobbing coming from the living room. "She's pretty upset, again."
"Oh man. Jimmy she hasn't looked at that in months. Especially the past box. She made that when she was like 4," D.J. said putting a hand on my shoulder.
I smiled weakly. Mr. T looked on with an odd admiration and understanding and went to comfort Steph.
"I should go. Tell Steph I'll call her later," I said before going to my old house to figure out what to do next. It breaks my heart to know Steph is sad but overjoyed at the same time. To leave her alone to cry knowing I hurt her did not leave a good feeling inside.
