Chapter 2
I shove poor Phoenix aside and look outside.
Yep. Its him, all right.
Id kinda sort of forgotten about him. I mean, I could have died out there. But here he is, and he hasn't forgotten about me. He takes one look at me and laughs aloud.
"Hey Hun, you've got a little something… everywhere." He laughs himself inside.
I scowl at him and study his face. Hes extremely hot, I'd even say
As hot as Phoenix.
He has blond hair that looks almost gold. His eyes are my signature color, navy. His face is perfect. He looks like the kind of guy that could cheer you up no question. His hair is messy, but obviously cared for.
I wish I could cut the tension in the room with some scissors. Awkward.
"Uh, what's your name, err… sir?" Phoenix asks.
"I'm Adrien," Adrien explains, "And you are…?"
''Phoenix,"
"And I'm Sky! Hi," I say.
They laugh, and some of the tension releases.
"So, uh, why are you here?" I ask Adrien.
"Well, I asked my butler about you, and he told me everything. I got him to give me your new address, and here I am," his eyes fill with compassion. "Are you okay?"
I bite my lip.
"I think so," I say. "but it's hard, you know? I mean, I'm never- I'm not gonna- I- Adrien," I start to sob.
Adrien sighs compassionately and wraps his arms around me.
"I'll never see them again," I sob.
"Not mom, not dad, not my maid, not my dog. Adrien, he was on fire and burning right in front of me, trying to get to me. It was like he was trying to comfort me for his own death," I have relived the look in his eyes second since seeing it.
Adrien kisses the top of my head softly.
"I'm so sorry, Lark," he whispers into my hair.
"Hold it," Phoenix says, "Who's Lark?"
"Oh, I call her my Skylark. Lark for short," Adrien explains with a smile. "I did that ever since I met her voicing together for a bird movie. She calls me Adribird." I smile sadly. I remember that.
I dry my tears.
"You came just in time to help with my room. We're decorating it today," I say.
"oh… um…fun!" Adri mumbles.
I laugh and grab his hand, pulling him upstairs.
"Don't worry, Phoenix," I say, "Adribird is super ripped. He won't have a hard time with anything,"
Then I stop short, noticing his jacket.
"Adri! You can't work in that!" I exclaim. His black leather jacket is imported from France and worth billions of dollars.
"Phoenix! Can you lend him some of your clothes?" I ask, turning to look at him.
I probably shouldn't have.
For a designer of everything, I'm pretty darn bad at observing things.
Phoenix looks mad, sad, and embarrassed all at the same time.
"What's wrong?" I ask him.
"Nothing. I'll go get some clothes for Adribird."
"Oh, sorry, that's my nickname for him," I say without thinking.
Phoenix fake laughs and goes to his room to get clothes.
I turn to Adri.
"I'm so sorry I forgot you existed, Adri," I whisper.
"its fine. Happens a lot to- well, no one. Except maybe my parents. That's weird, for some reason the three people I care about most in the world can't remember I even exist,"
I laugh, but he doesn't.
"I'm sorry, Adribird," I say.
"It's whatever," he blurts. "I know what will cheer us up." He pulls out his phone and flips through.
"Here, I found it," he says, and clicks on something.
"May I have this dance?" he asks me, holding out his hand.
"On the stairs?" I laugh.
"Yes ma'am!" he chuckles, and the song starts.
Its 'Love Story' by Taylor Swift.
We start out slow, but we're both laughing and tripping and catching each other. The tripping is mostly me and the catching is mostly Adri.
I start mouthing the words, and he joins in.
We start to slow down and stop mouthing the words- and tripping- and he leans down and puts his forehead against mine.
I bite my lip and pull away.
"The, uh, paint is probably ready. Its been an hour." I sputter.
"Oh, I see," Adri laughs. "you're intimidated by moi." He runs his hand through his perfectly disheveled hair and smirks. I frown.
"In your dreams," I say, but I'm blushing like an inexperienced weirdo.
I'm usually really good with boys. It's a talent. I'm never too weird, but I'm quirky and flirty. I feed them the right insults and compliments. I never, ever get flustered. Ever.
But the thing with Adri, is he's so different. He's not interested in how perfect I need to act. He wants me to be me.
It's the whole reason I decided to be his girlfriend.
Well, that and he was rich.
I start to go upstairs.
"Forgetting something?" Adri asks, motioning to his jacket.
"Oops, sorry! PHOENIX!" I shout.
"I'm, uh, right here," Phoenix says from the bottom of the stairs, clothes in hand.
"How long have you been standing there?" Adri asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Long enough," Phoenix mumbles.
My face turns red. And its not like a 'oh no I dropped my bag in the middle of the street' red, its an honest to goodness freaked out that's a stalker red.
Phoenix laughs aloud.
"It's fine, Sky. My parents used to kiss… hard… in front of me. And I was only five."
"Okaaay, that was a bit of info no one needed," Adri laughed.
I only half laugh.
My parents are dead. I'll never be able to say 'ew!' at them kissing again.
I clear my throat.
"So Adri, go get changed. I'll be working with Phoenix."
"Sounds good," Adri says, grabbing the clothes and bounding down the stairs to the bathroom.
Phoenix and I trudge upstairs, refusing to match Adri's gait.
"So. Adribird," Phoenix mumbles.
"Uh, yeah," I confirm, smiling slightly and smoothing out the tree decal in front of me.
Theres a moment of awkward silence that passes between us.
"I'm gonna put on some music. What do you like?" Phoenix asks.
"Shawn Mendes!" I scream.
He laughs.
"Alright, then," he scrolls through his poor iPhone 4 that looks like its been run over- several times- by a tractor.
He puts it on and I squeal with delight.
I start singing along to 'Treat you Better' and Phoenix laughs at me.
Adri walks in on us air- guitaring and dancing crazily.
He laughs aloud and slaps his knee.
"You guys need to go on Dancing with the Stars," he announces.
"Been there, done that," I study my nails with mock boredom.
"So. Now that youre both here, all I have to do is supervise," I say.
"Huh?" they ask simultaneously.
"get to it," I say, and lean against the wall.
