So I doubt anyone was expecting this to be updated, but after finishing the chapter for Cerulean Heart (my Fire Emblem Piece) I wanted to keep writing, so I decided I'd do another part of this story. I do hope you enjoy, and have as much fun reading it as I did writing it.
The blazing summer sun beats down on me as I cast my lure into the pond. I would take a dip in the river, but after an incident involving a certain red otter I tend to stay away from large bodies of water. Also coconuts. Especially coconuts. I'm not even entirely sure what I'm trying to catch here, but Isabelle told me to take a break for an hour, and I can't go back to my house without lamenting it's sorry state (or feeling that Tom Nook is ready to strike me.)
I stare into the pond, wiping a bead of sweat away. Apparently a new resident was moving in today… I should make an effort to meet them at some point. Part of my mayoral duties and such. Just as I'm thinking it, I see two figures approaching in the distance, one of them gesturing at me. Isabelle, most likely with the new resident. I stand up and prepare to pull my rod in when the new they arrive, but the new resident immediately waves her… Hands? Fins? I don't know, to stop.
"Hi there! Please don't stop fishing." Comes a high pitched, happy voice. The new resident is a large frog, with light blue skin on the top of her head and bright pink cheeks.
"This is Mayor Eli," Says Isabelle. "He'll be happy to answer any questions you have about the town, won't you Mr Mayor?" Isabelle asks in that puppy like manner of hers. I suppose I have to agree.
"Why, yes, of course I will, er…?" I say, hoping to get her name.
"Oh, my name is Lily!" She says. Ha.
"Lily? Heh, I get it." I chuckle.
"What?" She asks, tilting her head, the fluffy dog with her doing the same.
"Er… Nothing. Thank you Isabelle, I can take it from here." The dog secretary nods and scurries off. I turn to the newest resident.
"So… How are you finding the village?" I ask. Lily nods enthusiastically.
"It's toadally great!" She cries, causing me to blink.
"Ha, I get that one too." I grin.
"Get what?" She asks again, with pure innocence.
"Nothing. Nothing. So when did you arrive here?" I say as I sit back down to resume my fishing.
"Oh, a few hours ago! I would've checked in at the Mayor's Office sooner but I had a frog in my throat." Lily says as she stands beside me. My eye twitches slightly but I refuse to make a comment this time.
"Yup, but after awhile I decided I'd better hop to it." She says, now staring at me.
"You made the right choice."
"Yup… I honestly thought I'd croak under the pressure, but with a ribbit of self esteem I newt coming to meet you was the best thing." She says, her tone slowly losing the cheerful vibe. I turn to glance at her, scowling.
"Now you're doing it on purpose."
"Doing what?" She asks, hopping back to her initial disposition – damn now I'm doing it.
"N-nothing. So, er, do you like fishing?" I ask, wondering instantly if that was offensive.
"Yes, that's why I toad you not to stop! Have you had much luck?" She asks. I shake my head, putting physical effort into ignoring the "toad" part. Stick to a species type, damn it!
"None at all today, I was just about to give u-" As I say this something pulls on the line. It's not a hard tug so it can't be anything big, but it's something!
"Oooh, how ribbiting! Quick pull it in!" She says and I reel the line in. Maybe I can sell it to Nook or eat it for dinner or-
My train of thought is cut off as I reel in a small, green frog. A non anthropomorphic one. I stare at the little critter hanging from the end of my line, and slowly to look at my frog companion. I don't know what I was expecting. Probably not the reaction I got.
"Oh my Gosh! You got one! You're so the best! You toadally have to give it to me."
WHAT.
"You… Want the frog?"
"Yes! They're my favourite!"
Favourite for what?!
"Er, are you…"
"I'll trade you two hundred bells!"
"Sold." I say immediately. Lily takes the frog from the line and places it in her pocket, somehow fitting the thing in there. She reaches into her purse, and her face drops.
"Oh.. No… I'm out of bells." She says. She looks up at me, her eyes moist. Unless frogs eyes are always moist.
"Well, I guess I'll take it back…"
"No!" She yells, her eyes brightening. "I have a toadally better trade!" She says, reaching into the same pocket that I can now only assume is a wormhole and pulling out a tennis ball.
"Here, take this!" The frog lady shoves the ball into my hands and hops off at startling speeds.
"Thank you! It was nice meeting you, you should come around my pad sometime!" She said, quickly vanishing. I stare at the tennis ball in my hands, utterly confused. In-between trying to figure out if I'd just been conned and if "Lily's Pad" was another pun I throw the ball away in a pout and start walking toward my house. I suppose I could go hunting for some wild fruit again for food tonight… Or maybe see if I can extort a few sweets out of Egbert. I arrive at my home and rustle through my pockets for the keys as I hear the sound of something padding up toward me, quickly. I whirl around, expecting a sneak Tanooki attack, but instead see Isabelle… With the tennis ball in her mouth. The fluffy secretary spits the ball at my feet and smiles.
"Mr Mayor, I saw you threw the ball so I thought I'd return it to you!" She says happily, wagging her tail with glee. I turn around and slam my head against my door.
