Chapter 2
He was nervous and with each step he began to think more and more about how much of a bad idea it was, thinking quickly as he slowly made his way to Carols front door he tried desperately to think of something to say, something clever, something romantic, something that would win back her heart, but each time he came to nothing.
Ross stood nervously outside her door for a couple of seconds before breathing deeply and knocking three times, the familiar barking of Carols dog Sheba filled his ears. Normally that sound he liked as it made him think of Carol but today it was different as Ross knew that if he didn't save his relationship now it would be the last time he heard it.
Carol opened the door slowly her hair was tied in a scruffy bun and she was still in her pyjamas she smiled weakly at Ross and quietly said "hey"
"Hey" replied Ross not making eye contact instead he simply stared at his shoes.
"Here is your DVDs and your t-shirt back" offered Carol holding them out to him.
After several moment's hesitation he reached out and took them still unable to make eye contact
"I guess this is goodbye" said Carol as she turned to go back inside
"Carol wait!"
"What?" asked Carol her beautiful green eyes looked searchingly at Ross.
"I just have to know why?" Ross asked finally looking up.
"Please Ross not now"
"Please tell me what I did, I can be better" Ross now practically begging looked deep in to her eyes and took her hands.
What felt like forever passed with both Ross and Carol staring into each other's eyes while Ross gently stroked her hands and just as they were beginning to lean in closer together. Mere millimetres from their lips touching carol turned away.
"What did I do something wrong?" asked Ross the hurt obvious in his voice.
"Things are over between us, nothing you can say will change that, goodbye" and with that she was gone the door closed and the porch light turned off.
Ross felt lost it was almost as if this was all some horrible dream that he couldn't wake up from, slowly tears began to fall down his cheeks, normally crying in public would have been seen as social suicide but right now he couldn't care what anyone thought of him, he had just lost his first love, his first proper girlfriend and the girl that he would forever think of as having his first kiss with.
Ross made it back to his house almost on autopilot, he had taken the route hundreds of times before and today he walked in a trance not looking where he was going, not noticing what was going on around him and not reaching to wipe the tears that rolled slowly down each cheek.
By the time 7:20 had rolled around Ross was a mess he answered the door to Joey who for once in his life was actually early for something wearing just a pair of tracksuit bottoms and a pair of Batman socks
"Dude I thought I said be ready for 7:30?"
"I..." Ross briefly contemplated talking to Joey about what happened when he went to get his things back from Carol but quickly decided he didn't exactly want to relive that experience again
"Come on were leaving in 5 minutes, now go get ready" said Joey talking charge of the situation
"I don't really feel like coming out tonight" mumbled Ross as he stared at the ground
"Dude I need a wingman, I know you hurting right now but you've got to man up and get over that bitch!"
"But..."
"Get ready. Were going. No arguments."
Deciding he wasn't going to win this argument he walked back into his room pulled on a nice pair of jeans, a smart polo and his new grey trilby that Carol had gotten him a week or so ago.
"Looking good my friend" Said Joey smiling as his smartened up friend walked back into the room.
As he tied his shoes Ross looked up and asked "hey man can I ask you a question?"
"Anything"
"Do you think Carol was "the one"?"
"The one what?" Joey asked looking slightly confused
" you know the one, the one I'm supposed to marry, the one I'm supposed to have kids with, buy a little house with?"
"Not a chance, the love of your life is going to be awesome and let's face it Carol wasn't, i firmly believe you haven't met her yet" smiled Joey
"When do you think I will meet her? Asked Ross
"Such a gooey romantic aren't you" chuckled Joey "I don't know, maybe you will meet her tonight..."
