Chapter 2 – Welcome to Point Place

.

Beacon Hills, California

The Hale House

April 1976

Nathan lounged on the couch of the Hales' living room, smiling faintly as if he found the whole situation vaguely amusing. Peter and their older sister Talia were seated on either side of him, looking over at their mother, Alexandra Hale, who was seated in a chair by the fireplace. She was in her mid-forties, with long black hair, olive skin, and dark blue eyes, and had a serious, commanding air about her (which made sense, since she was the current Alpha of the Hale pack); however, she always had a soft spot for her three children.

After a long pause, Alexandra spoke. "Peter, Nathan? Are you sure that you want to do this? You know it'll mean being away from the pack for at least two years."

Peter considered for a moment, and then nodded. "Yeah, I think so. To be perfectly honest, as irritating as Nathan can be sometimes, he's right; I don't have much of a life here outside of our family. Barely any friends, and I can take or leave basketball. I already won the championship as team captain in my freshman year; I think that's enough for me. Going somewhere else, having new experiences… that might be exactly what I need to get out of this rut I'm in."

"As for me, I've wanted to get out of this town and see the world for a long time," Nathan said with a grin. "I'll miss Beacon Hills, of course, but at least for a while, I want to get out there and see what I can accomplish."

"In a little town in Wisconsin?" Talia asked skeptically. "Doesn't exactly sound like the best social scene."

"It's a start, at least," Nathan replied.

Alexandra nodded, a faint smile flickering across her face. "When I was your age, Nathan, I felt the same way. I left town for a few years, traveled the world; I saw things I could never have imagined before." She paused for a moment. "That's why I'm giving you two my permission to embark on this little scheme of yours. Go. See as much of the world as you can, have fun, and live your lives… but make sure to come back and visit from time to time." Her smile grew. "And, when you're ready to come home, we'll be waiting for you."

Nathan nodded, a matching smile on his face. "Thanks, Mom." Standing up, he hugged her. "We'll come back, I promise."

.

One week later…

Peter, Nathan and Talia stood in front of the Hale house, watching the sun rising on the horizon.

"I can't believe you're really going," Talia murmured, the sunlight reflecting in her eyes.

"Blame the genius who came up with the idea, not me," Peter replied.

Nathan chuckled. "Always with the negativity, little brother. Just try to relax! This is going to be fun!"

Peter snorted. "Yeah, I'm sure a little town in Wisconsin will be so exciting."

"See, this is what I'm talking about!"

Talia smirked. "Try not to kill each other while you're gone, you two." She scoffed. "Honestly, you guys bicker so much I'll be surprised if you both survive the next two years!"

"So considerate of you to care about our safety, big sister," Nathan said casually, grinning.

Talia hugged him, smiling. "I'm going to miss you, Nathan." Turning to Peter, she crushed him in a hug as well. "You too, Peter. Take care of him for me."

"No promises," Peter quipped.

The sound of a car horn caused all three siblings to turn their heads. Their father, Evan Hale, was seated behind the wheel of his car in the driveway, waving to them. "Hey, you two!" he yelled to Peter and Nathan. "Your flight leaves in three hours, and it's a two-hour drive to the airport! Let's go, we're burning daylight!"

Nathan laughed, lifting a suitcase in each hand – he'd basically cleaned out all of his personal belongings from his room – and headed for the car. "Yeah, yeah. Don't bust a vessel, Pops, it's bad for your health."

"Don't you get snippy with me, Nathan!"

Peter smiled, looking back at Talia. "Well, time to head out, I guess."

Talia smiled back, her eyes shining as they flashed yellow with emotion. Peter felt his own eyes glow yellow in response, and they hugged one last time.

"I'll miss you, little brother," Talia said softly into his ear.

"I'll miss you too, sis," Peter replied.

With a final squeeze, Talia released him, letting her arms fall to her sides. Peter lifted his suitcase and headed for the car.

As Peter heaved his luggage into the trunk and hopped into the backseat, Nathan, in the passenger's-side front seat, turned to face him with a grin. "And so it begins…"

"Oh, stop with the melodramatics!" Peter snapped.

"Hey, relax," Evan said, putting the car into gear and pulling out down the driveway.

As the car pulled away, Peter glanced out the back window, getting one last glimpse of the Hale house. The mansion faded slowly from his view, as did the figure of Talia, still waving to him.

Then the house, and Talia, vanished behind the trees, and were gone.

.

Eleven hours later

Point Place, Wisconsin

The cab pulled up to the curb and came to a stop. The passenger's-side door opened, and Nathan Hale stepped out of the car, glancing around. His eyes were hidden behind a pair of sunglasses, and his black leather jacket was highly incongruous in his suburban surroundings.

Nathan inhaled the cold air around him deeply, and smiled.

Fantastic.

Behind him, Peter clambered out of the backseat, grumbling, "Six hours in a confined space, sitting between you and a fat guy who smelled like tacos and sweat. It's official; I hate airplanes. And when we finally get here, what do we do next? Another two-hour car ride, with you prattling on about a thousand and one useless things! I swear to God, if you mention one more fact about Wisconsin's history, I am going to–"

"Oh, quit whining," Nathan interrupted, smirking as he opened the trunk, hauling his backpack and suitcases out and carrying them up to the house at the end of the driveway.

Although the home that the Hale family had rented in Point Place for Nathan and Peter to use was nowhere near as large as the Hale mansion back in Beacon Hills, it was certainly large enough for them to live quite comfortably for the next two years. It was two stories, with a large basement, and had plenty of space.

Nathan opened the front door with the keys that Alexandra had given him, looking around the room as he entered the house. "Well, this is pleasant."

"More so than I'd expected," Peter agreed, walking into the room behind his brother.

Nathan nodded, turning back to the front door. "All right, let's get our stuff settled in. Tomorrow we can head over to the high school and get you set up, okay?"

Peter groaned. "Seriously?"

"Yeah, seriously," Nathan said, smirking. "Sorry, Peter, but if we're going to be living here, you need to go to school."

Peter sighed, throwing up his hands. "Fine! But I don't know what you're planning to do all day while I'm at school."

Nathan grinned. "Hey, it's a totally new town; we've never been here before. I'll think of something."

Peter shrugged as he walked past his brother and up the stairs to his room. "Whatever."

.

Peter's new room wasn't all that different from his old one at the mansion in California, but it was considerably less extravagant. His old room had contained a chandelier hanging from the ceiling, large windows, two bookshelves for the countless novels he loved to read, and a large, extremely comfortable bed. This room had no chandelier, one window, one small bookshelf and a bed that looked like an air mattress compared to his old one.

Setting down his bags, Peter looked around the room and exhaled slowly. You've got to be kidding me. How the hell did I let him talk me into this?

The sounds of floorboards creaking reached his ears as Nathan moved around downstairs, probably setting up his own room.

Ah, well. At least he offered to come with me. Peter shrugged, tossing a suitcase onto the bed and unzipping it, and started to pull his clothes out of it.

.

Next day

Point Place High School

8:49 A.M.

Nathan and Peter walked through the front doors of the high school, immediately drawing the attention of everyone around them. The brothers' differing reactions clearly showed the difference between their personalities – while Peter didn't return any of the speculative glances from the onlookers, Nathan basked in the appreciative looks, basically strutting down the hallway and sending back confident smirks and winks to any girls he found attractive.

Peter all but covered his eyes. Oh, for the love of God, Nathan…

Nathan walked into the attendance office, nodding to the woman in charge. "Excuse me, ma'am, but we're here to pick up my brother's paperwork; he's starting school today." He indicated Peter with one hand.

The woman seated behind the counter smiled, obviously charmed. "Well, let me see if I can find your class schedule." She looked through several files, eventually coming up with one that was labeled Hale, P. She took a sheet of paper out of the file and handed it to Peter. "You should probably get going, son. Class starts in about five minutes."

Peter nodded, smiling faintly. "Thanks."

"Appreciate the help," Nathan continued, leading Peter out of the office. As they exited into the hallway, he turned to Peter with a smile. "All right, little brother; get going. I'll pick you up after school."

Peter sighed. "Whatever."

"Come on, stop being such a downer!" Nathan complained. "It's your first day! Have some fun, why don't you?" He grinned. "Make some friends, okay? Be social for once in your life!"

"Oh, all right, fine, I'll talk to people!" Peter snapped. "Now please, get the hell out of here!"

Nathan shrugged. "No problem. See you later." He winked to Peter, and then turned and walked away, back towards the front lot where their car was parked.

Peter turned and stalked off towards his first class, muttering under his breath.

.

It took a few minutes for Peter to find his first class, since everything was unfamiliar to him, but he was able to locate it before the bell rang. Entering the room, he walked over to the teacher, a middle-aged man with neatly combed brown hair, a tweed jacket, blue jeans and glasses, and held out the class schedule. "Um, excuse me… Mr. Peterson?"

The teacher glanced over at him. "Yes? Can I help you?"

"Well, actually, I'm your new student. My name's probably on the list. Peter Hale?" He held out the schedule.

Mr. Peterson took the sheet of paper from Peter and held it up, inspecting the schedule. He nodded in satisfaction and handed it back to Peter. "Ah, yes. Good; I'd been expecting you. Find a seat; I'll get a textbook out for you."

Peter nodded. "Thank you, sir." Turning, he glanced around the classroom. His eyes fell on an empty seat in the second row; he made his way over, placed his backpack on the floor and sat down.

"You new here?"

Startled, Peter turned his head, to see a boy who looked to be about his age. The guy had light brown hair that was styled in an Afro, round-lensed glasses, and a brown leather jacket. He grinned. "Easy, man. Just wondering. I haven't seen you around before."

Peter shook his head. "Uh, no… no, I just moved here a couple of days ago." Prompted by Nathan's reminder to make friends, he extended his hand. "I'm Peter Hale."

The other guy smiled, shaking Peter's hand. "Steven Hyde. Call me Hyde; everyone else does."

Peter nodded. "Nice to meet you… Hyde."

.

After the end of the class period, Peter and Hyde walked out of the school building, into the sunlight and cool air of the morning.

"So, what do you guys do for fun around here?" Peter asked.

Hyde grinned. "Oh, there's plenty of fun stuff to do in this town. You just have to know where to look. But if you're new here, you probably don't have anyone to hang out with…" He chuckled. "Ah, well. Come on, my friends are over here."

Peter trailed behind Hyde as he walked over to a group of other kids, two guys and a girl, seated at one of the lunch tables.

"Hey, guys," Hyde greeted them, sitting down on the bench next to the table. "This is Peter; he just moved here."

Peter raised one hand nervously in a greeting. "Um… hi."

"Peter, these are Eric, Kelso, and Donna," Hyde said, indicating each of the three other kids in turn.

Eric, a thin boy with tousled brown hair, smiled in a friendly way, shaking Peter's hand. "Nice to meet you."

"Thanks, you too," Peter replied, somewhat reassured by these kids' casual, friendly attitudes.

Donna, a tall girl with bright red hair, shook Peter's hand. "So where are you from?"

"California," Peter explained. "My brother and I moved out here a couple of days ago."

"No offense, but this isn't exactly the most exciting town in the world," Donna observed. "Why would someone who lives in California want to move here?"

Peter chuckled. "I guess I just wanted a change of scene. My brother certainly did."

The other guy, Kelso, glanced over, grinning. "By the way, that's a cool jacket, man."

Peter looked down at himself, examining the black leather jacket he was wearing over a white T-shirt. "Oh, thanks."

"So, if you're not doing anything after school, we were planning on hanging out over at the Hub," Hyde said. "Want to come with us?"

"That depends… what's the Hub?" Peter asked.

"Basically, it's where all the kids our age go to hang out," Eric said. "They've got food, an arcade; it's a lot of fun."

Peter shrugged. "Sure, I'll go. Why not?"

Hyde grinned, clapping Peter on the shoulder. "That's the spirit!"

.

The Hub

4:06 P.M.

Peter, Hyde, Eric, Donna and Kelso walked into the Hub, glancing around. It was fairly obvious to Peter that Eric hadn't been kidding; the Hub was definitely the center of the high school social scene in Point Place. There were at least thirty kids their age in the room, either eating or playing various arcade games.

"Cool place," Peter said, a smile on his face as he looked around.

"I know, right?" Hyde said, grinning. "And even better, this is where all of the girls love to hang out, too." He indicated several attractive girls seated together in the corner, several of whom were looking speculatively at Peter. "Looks like you've already got some attention."

Peter grinned nervously, glancing shyly back at the girls.

Slinging an arm around Peter's shoulders, Hyde chuckled. "Come on, man. Let's show you around."

After buying some food at the counter, Peter sat down at a table in the corner, next to Hyde. Eric, Donna and Kelso were also seated at the table, eating various snacks.

"So… what's California like?" Donna asked.

Peter considered. "Well, the area where I lived wasn't that much different from this town, honestly. My family lives in a huge house out in the middle of the woods. Supposedly, our family built it a few generations back when we first moved to California."

Eric's eyes widened. "Wow, that's really cool!"

Peter grinned. "Thanks." His smile faded slightly as he remembered Talia, and the sight of the old Hale house as he and Nathan had left the previous morning. It was hard to believe that it had already been two days since he'd left California.

Fighting off the tinge of sadness, Peter shrugged. "Well, I'm going to be here for at least the next two years; I'm planning to finish up high school here in Point Place."

Hyde grinned. "That's great, man! We're all going to be graduating at the same time, then."

"So we'll all be in school together for the next two years," Eric mused. He glanced over at Peter and smiled. "In which case… welcome to the gang, Peter!" He spread his arms to indicate himself, Hyde, Donna and Kelso, his smile widening.

Peter laughed, the sound echoed by Hyde, Donna and Kelso. And, for the first time, Peter thought, Maybe this town isn't so bad after all.

.

After the laughing died down, the table was mostly quiet for a few minutes while the five kids finished their food. Once they'd finished their meal, Donna looked around. "Well, I'd better get home; my dad'll get worried if I'm not home soon." She shook Peter's hand again. "It was nice meeting you, Peter." Turning, she walked out of the room, followed by the eyes of all four boys, Peter included.

As Donna exited the building and walked off down the sidewalk, Hyde glanced around, smiling. "Well, my friends, now that we're done here, Donna's gone, and Peter here is officially a member of the gang…" His smirk grew mischievous. "Shall we introduce him to our favorite… recreational activity?"

Eric and Kelso exchanged matching grins. "The Circle?" they chorused.

Hyde leaned back in satisfaction, nodding. "The Circle."

Peter was a little lost. "The Circle? What's the Circle?"

Hyde chuckled. "Oh, trust me. You're going to love this, man."

Peter considered, then shrugged inwardly. Whatever. "All right, why not? Where to?"

"Forman's house," Hyde replied, pointing to Eric. "Or, more specifically, Forman's basement."

Peter looked at Eric with a puzzled expression on his face, then looked back to Hyde. "I can't help feeling like I'm missing a little context here."

"Don't worry, it'll all make sense once we get there," Hyde said, getting to his feet. "Let's get going."

"Before we get to my house, though, there are a couple of things you should know," Eric said. "My mom will be very friendly; she always loves it when I bring new friends over. My dad… well, he's scary." He shivered for a moment, then shook his head, coming back to himself. "Just try not to talk to him, and you'll be fine."

Peter blinked. "Uh… okay."

Hyde smiled proudly, leading the way out of the Hub. "Peter, man… I have a feeling that this is going to be the beginning of a great friendship."

.

Woods outside of Point Place

4:48 P.M.

Nathan walked through the woods, his senses on full alert, taking in everything around him. Whenever a werewolf pack moved into a new territory, their first instinct was to inspect the area for traces of other occupants; other supernatural creatures living on the same land, which might compete with them over territory.

Nathan inhaled deeply, filling his lungs with the cold Wisconsin air as he tried to identify any unusual scents in the air around him. Nothing presented itself at first; just the normal smells of various animals against the background odor of earth and leaves that marked a forest.

Then, he caught a whiff of something, and his head turned sharply. There was something there, a faint trail to the east…

Jumping over a fallen tree, Nathan sprinted through the woods, letting instinct take over as he tracked the scent. It was definitely a werewolf, and it wasn't Peter. That meant a potential threat.

His eyes lit up, glowing yellow as he ran, dashing through the forest at a speed that would have seemed unbelievable to any human observer. Fortunately, no one else was there.

Suddenly, Nathan broke through the trees and skidded to a halt, breathing heavily. He looked around, his eyes wide.

He'd found the source of the scent.

Clearly visible, etched into the forest floor, was a fairly large trail. Nathan initially thought that it was a hiking trail, but a quick sniff of the air eliminated that possibility.

This, Nathan realized, was a werewolf's hunting trail. Some werewolves hunted according to a routine, prowling the same trails every night so that they didn't spread their scent all over the forest and spook their prey. Coyotes – real coyotes – did the same thing when they hunted.

The only problem was that the scent here was very strong. Much too strong for just one werewolf.

Whoever used this trail, Nathan already knew three things about them: they did so on a regular basis; there were a lot of them; and they had been there for a long time.

Nathan looked around warily, but there was no one in sight. Turning, he headed back into the woods and started jogging towards his house, thinking things over.

Clearly, there was a pack of werewolves already living in Point Place; a large, well-established one, at that. And this pack, whoever they were, might not take kindly to a couple of Betas from a different pack taking up residence in their territory.

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

This may not turn out well.

.

AN: And here we are again. Sorry it's taken me so long to update, but I've been very busy lately, and I haven't had much time to work on this story.

Hopefully you guys all enjoyed the Hale brothers' arrival in Point Place, and the introduction of some of the lead characters from That '70s Show. I know this chapter may have seemed a little boring, but it was necessary for storytelling purposes. Don't worry, things will get much more exciting in later chapters. :)

Next chapter will take place after a brief timeskip of a few weeks, to give Peter time to grow accustomed to the gang, so the next chapter of this story will follow the events of the first episode of That '70s Show… with a supernatural twist.

As always, I really appreciate feedback on my work, so if anyone has any questions or comments regarding this chapter or the story as a whole, please review! (No hate, please).

See you next time!
