Being Mum – Two- Time to Celebrate.
Elphaba was like a zombie. The baby had woken her three times in the night, she yawned as she made herself a strong cup of coffee and some toast. As she ate Elphaba watched the small baby sleeping in the Moses basket her heart melting at the little snuffling nosies she was making, the sound of the doorbell knocked her out of her thoughts. Standing up and putting her plate down on to the coffee table she went to open the door. It was the Midwife.
"Good morning Ms Thropp, my name is Ata Woodstone I'm the midwife who will be doing your post natal care for the next ten days."
Elphaba looked at the woman, she was sure she recognised her from somewhere but couldn't think where "Have we met before?"
Ata looked at the green woman "I don't think so dear I definitely would have remembered you, now let's have a look at the little one"
The two women walked back into the from room and Elphaba scooped the baby up out of the basket, then handed her to Ata, the midwife took the small baby from the green woman and smiled at her before removing her baby grow. After giving her the once over and a quick weigh she re dressed her and gave her back to Elphaba.
"She's doing fine, I mean obviously I wasn't expecting that much to have changed since yesterday, now let's have a look at you Elphaba".
The green woman put the baby into the bouncer then laid down on the settee and lifted her pyjama top up. Ata gave her tummy a quick feel then smiled. Noticing this Elphaba looked at her with a confused expression.
"What's wrong" said Elphaba.
"Nothing dear I'm just amazed at how quick you are healing" said Ata. After a quick check of Elphaba's blood pressure she put away her equipment and pulled a small red book out of her bag and gave it to the green woman "this is baby's red book all her vaccinations, weight and other important medical information will be recorded in it so please don't loose it and always have it with you when leaving the house, also does baby have a name yet so I can note it down in her book here"
Elphaba smiled "she does I finally decided on it this morning, it's Annabelle Louise Thropp"
"That's a beautiful name for a beautiful baby" said Ata noting it down in the small red book "right that's it for today I will be here at about the same time everyday for the next ten days, in three days time I will need to do Annabelle's heel prick test"
Elphaba looked at the other woman a confused look on her green face "What's that for"
"Don't worry it's just a standard blood test for all newborns to test for Sickle Cell, Cystic fibrosis and a few other things" said Ata. Just as Annabelle started to cry.
Scooping the tiny baby up into her arms, Elphaba popped the little dummy back into her mouth and made quiet shushing sounds "it's ok baby I know you are hungry Mummy will get your bottle in a minute"
At the word bottle, Ata's head looked up from the notes she had been writing and looked at the green woman "You are not breastfeeding, can I ask why"
"You can, it's because the very idea of it makes me sick to my stomach" said Elphaba matter of factly.
Ata looked shocked at the green woman's words "I don't understand why, it's natural and always best for baby, you should really consider doing it or maybe expressing the milk into a bottle"
"No thank you, I've told you why I don't want to, now if that's everything I need to feed and change my daughter" said Elphaba.
After seeing Ata out, Elphaba headed into the kitchen to make up a bottle for Annabelle, checking the kettle she smiled when she found the water that was left from she last time she had boiled it was at just the right temperature. Once the bottle was ready, Elphaba went back into the front room and scooped the baby who was now starting to cry into her arms.
"It's ok baby Mummy's got your milk" said Elphaba taking the lid off the bottle and rubbing the teat on the baby's lips and she started to feed.
As she watched her tiny daughter taking her milk, Elphaba couldn't help but feel like the luckiest woman alive the tiny baby had only been in the world a day but she knew she would give her life for her in a heartbeat, she was knocked out of her thoughts by the phone ringing which made Annabelle jump violently in her arms.
Quickly grabbing her mobile from the table in front of her she answered it and put it on speaker "Hello". She was met by a familiar shrill voice.
"Elphie it's Glinda, I'm just calling to ask if want to come over to my place this afternoon, that is if you feel up to it" said Glinda her voice full of hope.
Elphaba sighed as tired as she felt she didn't want to let her friend down "Ok why not I'll be there for twelve o clock"
Glinda squealed loudly "Great, I'll see you soon then, oh wait how are you going to get here surly you are not up to driving yet"
"It's not that far Glin I'll take a slow walk down" said Elphaba putting the bottle down on the table and moving Annabelle to her shoulder to wind her.
"Ok Elphie see you soon bye" said Glinda and the phone went dead.
Elphaba looked at the small baby on her shoulder and gently rubbed her back after a few minutes she felt a small vibration on her hand that was holding the baby's bottom.
"Thank you, young lady you are not supposed to fart on Mummy's hand" said Elphaba with a laugh as she laid the baby back into her arms and picked up the bottle again.
Meanwhile down at Glinda and Boq's house it was like Piccadilly Circus at rush hour, Boq hanging pink balloons and banners, Croupe and Titbit setting out the food on the table and Nessarose folding pink napkins, while Glinda floated around making sure everything was perfect.
"Come on everyone, we don't have long before Elphie will be here" said Glinda just as the door bell rang "Oh good that will be Fiyero back with the drinks" and she dashed off to the door.
Back in Elphaba's cottage, she had finished feeding the baby and was now in the process of getting her dressed into a pink and white top with small flowers on it and a matching pair of pink leggings, a pink and white hat with a small flowers completed the outfit.
"There you go my darling" said Elphaba and she laid the baby into the Moses basket "you lay there while Mummy gets the baby bag sorted"
Grabbing the Winnie the Pooh baby bag, Elphaba unzipped it and put a handful of nappies, packet of wipes, clean bib, a couple of rattles, clean set of clothes, spare dummy, Muslin cloth and a small tub with the formula for the next feed in she then zipped up the bag and slipped the bottle with the water in for the feed into the little pocket on the side of it.
Then leaving the bag on the settee, Elphaba went into the hallway, opened the cupboard by the front door, lifted the umbrella buggy out of it and flipped it open. Making sure it was up properly and wouldn't collapse, she unzipped the foot muff and made sure the straps were at the right length. Then grabbing the pale pink all in one baby coat from the hook she went back into the sitting room and laid it out on the settee before scooping Annabelle out of the Moses basket and gently laying her onto it, she tucked the tiny baby's arms and legs into the coat then gently zipped it up making sure not to catch anything in the zip.
"There you go my sweetheart, that will keep you all nice and cosy until we get to Auntie Glinda's house" said Elphaba as she walked out into the hallway.
After strapping the tiny baby into the buggy, she tucked the pink blanket over her and zipped up the foot muff then hung the baby bag onto the handles. Elphaba then went and quickly got dressed into a simple pair of dark blue jeggings and a white long sleeved top, she tied her long raven hair back into a pony tail then slipped on a pair of black pumps and her coat, making sure she had her purse, house keys and mobile phone in the front pocket of the baby bag she slowly pushed the buggy out of the front door, closing and locking it behind her.
"Ok little one let's go and see Auntie Glinda" said Elphaba with a small yawn as she started to walk down the road.
Back at Glinda's place everything was now ready for the small get together and everyone was now waiting for Elphaba to arrive. Fiyero was feeling nervous about seeing the green woman again after almost ten months especially after finding out what his so called best friend had done to her. He had gone ballistic when he found out and hadn't spoken to said friend since, he was knocked out of his thoughts by Glinda smacking him on the arm.
"Fifi will you pay attention" said Glinda. Fiyero looked at her sheepishly "I asked if you know who came with you from the Vinkus this time"
Fiyero frowned, anger filling his face "Unfortunately yes, my Father insisted he came but I warned him to keep away from Elphaba" Then he saw the look on Glinda's face "what's wrong"
"I went to see Elphie last night when she got home from hospital, I asked if she was going to tell him he's got a daughter she got quite annoyed at me and basically asked me to leave" said Glinda.
"Really, Glin after the way he treated her you expect her to let him near her child" said Fiyero. Just as the door bell rang.
"That will be Elphie" said Glinda dashing to the door.
On the other side of the door, Elphaba yawned again and rubbed a hand on her lower back, she had just started to yawn for the second time when the door was flung open and she was hit square in the chest by a flash of blonde.
"Hi, Glin" said Elphaba peeling the excited blonde off of her and letting out a sign of relief as air started to fill her lungs again.
"Oh Elphie I'm so glad you came" said Glinda then she turned to the buggy which Elphaba had now wheeled into the hallway "can I get her out please please please"
Elphaba smiled at the blonde girl who was lightly bouncing up and down on the spot "Of course you can be gentle though"
Glinda gave a little squeal and slowly unzipped the foot muff she then unclipped then straps and lifted the tiny baby into her arms "Hi baby it's auntie Glinny again aren't you just so beautiful, come and see what I've got for you in the sitting room"
The green woman smiled and followed Glinda into the sitting room.
"SURPRISE, CONGRATULATIONS ELPHABA"
Elphaba jumped out of her green skin at the sudden noise then looked around the room at all her friends her smile grew even bigger when she saw Fiyero.
"Yero, what are you doing here" said Elphaba as the prince pulled her into his arms in a friendly hug.
"Am I not allowed to visit my friends now" said Fiyero with a laugh "plus I had to come and see the mini Elphaba, that is if Auntie Glinda let's anyone else have a hold, I think someone is getting broody"
At Fiyero's words, Boq (who had been quietly eating the Skips from the bowl) turned to face him fear all over his face.
"Oh Oz you mean she wants babies, I don't think I'm ready for that responsibility just yet we've only been married two months"said Boq.
Half and hour later the group of friends were sat around the front room, Fiyero was holding Annabelle while Elphaba was opening the many presents that had been given to her, she picked up a large gold box with the royal stamp of the Vinkus on it then turned her head to face Fiyero.
"What have you done" said Elphaba as she slowly opened the box. Inside she found gold tissue paper wish she gently lifted out of the box and gasped underneath was a long white dress, bonnet, a pair of white shoes and a white woollen shawl "Oh Yero it's so beautiful it must have cost a fortune, I can't accept this"
Fiyero handed the baby to Boq then walked over and sat down next to Elphaba.
"You can and you will accept it, besides my mother will have me hung if you don't she had it made especially, along with this" said Fiyero pulling a small box from his pocket and holding it out to her.
The green woman took the box from Fiyero her fingers brushing his lightly sending a spark of electricity up her arm and down her spine making her shudder, shaking her shoulders she looked at the small box in her hand and opened it. Inside was a small gold bangle with tiny diamonds all around it.
"Oh Fiyero this is really too much I can't…" Elphaba started to say but to her surprise found herself silenced by Fiyero's lips on her own, she immediately shoved him off of her "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING"
Fiyero blushed bright red and looked around at the others who were all sitting with shocked expressions on their faces, then back to Elphaba. Taking a deep breath he spoke.
"Elphaba I erm.. I, ever since I first met you I knew you were special and not just because you're green, you are smart, beautiful, loving, caring and the most stubborn woman I've ever come across, I love you" said Fiyero "I love you with every fibre of my body"
Elphaba stared at him for a long time her mouth opening then closing again like a cod fish "Fiyero I .. how..when"
The door bell rang breaking the awkwardness and making them all jump, Glinda went to answer it, seconds later they heard a raised voice in the hallway then someone entered the sitting room his face like thunder Glinda behind him trying to stop him.
"GLINDA GET OFF OF ME I TOLD YOU I WANT TO SEE MY BABY"
