Hey guys, its Brandon. Sorry for the delay, I completed this chapter months ago, but as I wrote in my previous updates on my other fan fics, I had a kidney stone removed, and haven't been able to update my posts. Please forgive me.
Anyway, this chapter is brief, but mainly deals with the BAU reviewing the case in Pasadena, and determining what they need to do to find Bennett and Ellen's killer.
If everybody's ready, please enjoy this chapter, and let me know what you think of it.
Chapter 1
"A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic."
-Joseph Stalin
Five and a half hours after departing Myrtle Beach, the BAU agents awoke from their sleep on the plane when the alarm on Reid's phone went off. When that alarm went off, they immediately made their way to the lavatory to run water in their face, and to the bar to grab a cup of coffee, before sitting back down to gather their thoughts on the bizarre crime that had taken place in Pasadena approximately twelve hours earlier.
Hotch looked at the members of team, took a sip of coffee, and began to speak.
"What we have here is a case that immediately went cold. The children were out at the movies, so we can rule them out. What do we know about home invasions?" Hotch asked as he studied the photos.
"Nearly every home invasion that occurs in Southern California is caused by a person who is unrelated to the victim. However, in the case of Bennett James and Ellen Jennings, the circumstances are so different it could be anybody who had a grudge against them or their children." Reid said as he rubbed his eyes, and looked at the photos, and then at the team.
"I find it hard to believe that Mr. James and Ms. Jennings were targeted at random. It doesn't make any sense." Blake said as she glanced at the photos, looked at Reid, and then at Hotch.
"Avery Jennings could be our greatest chance at finding out if there was anybody who had a grudge against her, Tyler, Chloe, or their parents. We need to question her." JJ said.
"Right now, Chloe James is probably in an ICU unit either at UCLA or Cedars. The hospitals in the San Fernando Valley do not have pediatric trauma centers, considering that she went into neurological shock when she saw her parents' dead bodies." Rossi said as he looked at JJ.
"That house is where we need to start. Somebody knew that the kids were away, and they thought it was the perfect time to ambush the parents." Morgan said as he looked at each member of the team.
"When we land, we will immediately split up. JJ, you and Dave find out where Chloe James is at, and question Tyler James and Avery Jennings about any threats the family received. Morgan, you and Blake check out the residence, and find out what you can from the neighbors about their family life. Reid and I will speak to the lead detective, and find out what we have to go on so far." Hotch said as he looked at the team.
"This may be a very difficult case to solve, and I have a feeling that it's somebody who is very good at covering their tracks." Rossi said as he looked at the team.
The plane's engines began to roar, and banked sharply as it began its approach into the San Fernando Valley.
That's chapter 1. Short, I know, but it sets the scene in Pasadena. Let me know what you thought of it. I will continue working on chapter 2 and will post it soon.
