The Unexpected Consequence

Disclaimer: I don't own Merlin or take any credit for it

It had been two weeks since the babies had invaded his life. Arthur had given him a few weeks off to get used to him new situation. Before the babies had arrived, Gaius' home had always been imaculatle and well organized. But now there was nothing but chaos with potions and ingriedents all scattered around the place. Merlin quickly learned that taking care of babies was not his forte. They seemed cried ALL night long and never give him any peace.

"Where is the list I was preparing last night?" his guardian asked him.

"Under the cot" Merlin told him.

Oh! I almost forgot to tell you about the most interesting surprise about the dynamic duo. They both have magic, just like their parents. Merlin could understand why his mother always used to tell him that raising a magic child is challenging. Since Merlin couldn't trust his children to a normal nannie because they'd have to leave Camelot. So his mother was moving down here to help with the babies.

Despite all of the trouble that they'd given him, Merlin loved them more than anything in the world. He had a strong desire to protect them from the world. Balinor had his ears which made him proud and Freya was going to be as beautiful as her mother. It made him sad that his children will grow up with a parent missing like he had to. His mother was due any moment now to help him.

Merlin heard a knock at the door and opened it to reveal his mother glowing at him. She looked healthy and happy before him which made him happy in return. Merlin hugged his mother and then closed the door behind him.

"It's lovely to see you mother" Merlin greeted.

"And to see you" she replied, "Hello Gaius"

"Hello" he smiled pleasantly.

"Now where are my Grandchildren?" she asked.

The babies were in their cots and were sleeping soundly. She beamed when she saw them and asked all sorts of questions about them. Until she moved on the uncomfortable one:

"Whose the mother?" his mum asked.

Gaius and Merlin gave each other an awkward look.

"Morgana" Merlin said sheepishly.

She started at her son like he was idiot with her mouth open is shock.

"Thee Morgana?" She gasped, "Morgana Pendragon, the evil witch"

"That very one" Merlin admitted.

"What were you thinking?" his mum yelled, "Did you love her?"

"No" Merlin shook his head.

"Did she rape you?"

"NO!" Merlin denied in a horrified voice.

"Then why did you sleep with her then?"

Merlin felt uncomfortable discussing this with his mother. She was fixing him that steely glare she always used to do when he'd done something naughty. The fact is that he doesn't really know what he was thinking. It was a spare of the moment kind of thing which he can't really explain. Merlin just stood there for a couple of moments, think about what to say to his mother.

"I...don't know" he replied lamely.

"I thought I raised you better then that" she rolled her eyes, "Gaius, can you show me where I'm sleeping?"

"Of course" Gaius agreed.

They left him alone with the babies who where now awake and staring at him.

"Don't you start" Merlin said under his breath.

Later on in the evening, Merlin and the others were having dinner. His mother was feeding the babies much to her delight. They've already taken to her and so Merlin will be going back to work tomorrow morning. His mother has seemed to of calmed down and now seems to be looking forward to her life here.

"Let me get this straight" his mother began unexpectedly, "Their grandfather is Uther, they've also got a half Uncle whose the King and a half aunt called Morgause. Their Grandfather tried to kill their other grandfather, Balinor. And their father had tried to kill their mother and visa versa"

It sounded insane when she put it like that but it's the truth. They've got a very odd family tree.

"That's right" Merlin nodded.

"Does anyone else know about who their mother is?" she asked.

"No"

"Let's keep it that way" she advised.

Merlin knew that with his mother here, the babies should be under control. He thought about their mother and what she might be doing now.

...

Morgana felt no regrets at leaving her children with Merlin. She wasn't the maternal type. Would she be back to check in on them one day?

Certainly.
