Chapter 2: Dinner is Served
Kyoya saw it coming. The moment Kaiba set his eyes on his father; he knew something was going to happen. He didn't know what exactly, but it was probably going to be unpleasant for him or his father if that smirk the CEO sent his way was any indication.
It was dinner time and, true to his word, Kaiba showed up for it. Kyoya didn't actually specify the time he should have showed up. He supposed leaving that little detail out was due to the man being so rude to him. Why blame him though when the rude, young man had managed to show up in time anyways? Still, he thought it best not to mention this to his father.
"So, CEO of KaibaCorporation, huh?" his father said, all smiles as they sat around the table to eat. His siblings, along with his mother, were all present for this meal and, not surprisingly, all smiles as well. "Yet, you're so young, taking over your father's company at the age of fourteen."
"Step-father, actually," the genius corrected.
His father nodded, accepting the correction. "By the way, I am very sorry for your lost."
Kaiba's blue eyes noticeably sharpened at that. "Don't bother." It was a very odd reply, one nobody was expecting. At seeing everyone's reaction, slight as they were, the CEO added, "It happened over a year ago, the mourning period is over. There's hardly a need to say sorry."
The Shadow King highly doubted that was the real reason the blue-eyed man had said it and he knew he wasn't the only one who was thinking that as he studied his father, taking in his composure, trying to see what his next move would be.
The head of the family just gave a tight-lipped smile. "Quite right. Perhaps we should talk about other things?"
His sister, Fuyumi, piped up, eager to get a chance to talk, "Kaiba-sama, You're in the same grade as Kyoya, right? The third-year?"
The brunet nodded. So, even though he was a year younger than the youngest of the Ootori, he was still in the same grade as Kyoya which the ever resourceful and informative Shadow King had discovered after doing more research on him after their first encounter.
"Oh!" she exclaimed, delighted at the fact her younger brother might make more friends, though he thought differently on the whole friendship matter(Tamaki's friendship, along with the rest of the Host Club's, was more than enough). "That's wonderful! Do you happen, by chance, to be going to the same school?"
"No," he said, looking over at Kyoya, "I don't believe so. I go to Domino High School."
Kyoya nodded, finding this would be a good place to join in. "I go to Ouran Academy." He would have left it at just that had his curiosity not gotten the better of him. "Tell me, is going to a public school, such as Domino High, very good? Why not go to Ouran Academy like others of your status?"
"It was not a matter of preference, it was a matter of what was closest to KaibaCorp. Besides, I hardly see the need to go to a school further away when whatever they teach there I already know anyways just as I already know what I'm learning at Domino."
"True. However," he pushed up his glasses, "you'd think the press would be swarming all over that school with nothing stopping them from entering such a public place. Wouldn't a private school with better security, whose job's it is to keep people like reporters out, be a better option?"
The CEO barely considered the question for more than a split second. "Perhaps, but I know how to handle the press and keep them at bay. So I find no need in a private school full of rich kids who haven't worked a day in their life," he replied icily.
The youngest Ootori barely took note of his sister's worried expression at this. Obviously she thought this conversation would go well. It seems that hoping for as much was rather foolish, all things considered. "Still, there's still time to switch if you change your mind. I personally know the headmaster's son. So I could-"
"I said forget it, Ootori." The chilling glare Kyoya had been receiving previously was nothing compared to the new level of the one he was being sent now. He secretly wondered how many times over he'd be dead had Kaiba's glares had any real physical effect on people.
A clearing of the throat cut off any response the Shadow King would have uttered. "Forgive my son, Kaiba-sama. He meant no disrespect, I promise." Kyoya didn't. "Now," his father said, suddenly switching over to the side Kyoya was more familiar with, the business one, "what's this I hear about you setting up Kaiba Land's all over the globe? I've been quite curious about them."
The brunet smirked and, as Kyoya figured he would, saw right through the other business man's intentions. "I bet you have. No doubt you've also heard about the new school for duelists I've been busy building as well."
The oldest Ootori nodded, also catching onto Kaiba already knowing his plans. "So, by now, you've probably already figured out what I want to propose to you in regards to these new projects of yours."
Kaiba nodded, silently waiting for him to continue.
"Then I'll just clarify my intentions. What I would see benefiting us both would be you employing a good percentage of my personal police force which, mine you, I don't just offer up for anybody. They'd be used to help keep those students safe that would be attending your new Duel Academy. They could also be used to ensure the safety of your amusement parks or even the KaibaCorp.'s main headquarters. I might even be willing to let you use them personally for your own security at home or wherever you happen to be."
The CEO only raised an eyebrow. "Oh? So, what makes you so willing to let me use them?"
"Well, I'm sure you already know this, but you're step-father and me used to be business partners. I'd even let him use my police force when asked. Thought it only fair to offer you the same."
"So there is more than just you wanting me to employ you're private security?"
"Yes, I would also see it beneficial for you to have our health care staff on hand at your school and parks should anything go amiss. I'd also say that perhaps having one of our relaxation resorts nearby your academy would be great for stressed out students to enjoy," he finished with a polite smile, one that had yet to really leave his face.
"I see," was the only thing the genius had to say, leaving the rest of the dining table silent as Kaiba thought on the offer. The quietness stretched on for about five minutes with no one daring to so much as breathe, it seemed. Kyoya wondered if the young man had fallen asleep considering the way he kept his eyes closed as he thought. However, just before he could confirm that to be the case, those piercing eyes opened again. "I believe I'll have to decline your offer."
Kyoya's father did fairly well at hiding his shock, but his fake smile did slightly faltered for a split second. "May I ask why?"
"Gozaburo." The way he said the name told the Shadow King all he'd ever needed to know about how Kaiba felt about the man. He spoke the name bitterly, like it tasted awful just to say it, and full of nothing but absolute loathing while his eyes were cold and as hard as ice.
"Gozaburo?" the head of the family parroted.
The CEO slammed his hands on the table as he stood up, shaking the piece of furniture and making everything on it rattle. His head was bent forward a bit, hiding his eyes from view. "Yes," he stated calmly as if he'd never gotten up from his chair. "It's because you've worked with him before."
"I hardly see that as a reason-"
"Don't pretend like you don't know what I mean," Kaiba hissed, his hair parting as he looked at Yoshio Ootori with hate filled eyes as cold as the Antartic.
Kyoya's father grimaced, his eyes returning the glare. "I assure you, I have no idea what you're implying."
The genius scoffed and leaned forward across the table towards Yoshio with a smirk. "Really now? Should I regale you're family with all the horrible details of your dealings with my Warlord of a father? Should I tell them about how he made a deal with you to make your family millions by starting wars in already war-torn countries so your medical staff could "save" their lives?" Upon these words even Kyoya's eyes were widening in disbelief while at his side his sister was hardly managing to breathe. Tears had begun to run down her face, a hand up to her lips as if to hold in her silent sobs of disbelief and horror.
The head of the family stood up to meet the CEO in height. "How dare you accuse me of such things?! I invited you under my roof! How dare you disrespect in such a way!"
"I have proof." At that, Yoshio was struck silent. Fuyumi was gasping for air at this point, grabbing on desperately to her younger sibling's hand.
Kaiba reached down beneath the table, retrieving his steel briefcase. He then set it on the table and put in the combination. Once opened, he pulled out a large, manila folder and handed it to Kyoya, who took it wordlessly. "In there is documented proof of all that I have stated." Kyoya nodded, his sister hiding her face in his shoulder but made no move to stop him from opening it.
Inside the folder, the Shadow King discovered, were pictures of his father and some other man who he can only presume was Kaiba Gozaburo. In it, they were standing side by side, examining a multitude of weapons. The documents that followed had more pictures clipped to them showing similar things. One was of Yoshio clinking glasses with Gozaburo in front of a missile, another of the two of them sitting down to dinner surrounded by soldiers. It was all too surreal. Upon looking at the documents he found a copy of the deal made between the two companies just as Kaiba Seto had explained. This, along with all the other documents, the youngest Ootori saw that he had all the proof he needed.
He looked up from the contents of the folder to meet the rest of his families gaze, for even his sister had raised her head to hear the verdict. "It appears to be true." Fuyumi let out a cry of despair, throwing her arms around Kyoya as she cried in earnest this time without possibly ever stopping. His brothers and his mother sat in a tense, shocked silence as if not sure how to react. Yoshio was too stunned to move, having a hard time processing the words his son had just spoken.
"I'm going to my room for the night," Kaiba announced. "If you have anymore questions," he looked pointedly at Kyoya, "then you'll know where to find me." And, with that, the young CEO started to depart from the dining room, trying to leave the room's occupants to sort out the drama that had just unfolded themselves. Yet, we was stopped by a rough grip on his wrist, turning him around. He was met with the sight of one very angry Ootori Yoshio.
"You little punk," the man spat, raising a hand. The CEO's eyes widened upon realizing Ootori-sama's next move, finding himself unable to move to stop it.
A resounding slap filled the air.
"I'm sorry, father," came Kyoya's soft voice from where he stood in front of Kaiba, one cheek red in the shape of a hand-print.
No one moved for what felt like a century until Yoshio managed to bark out, "Get out of my sight, both of you!"
The youngest Ootori gave a small bow of the head before gently taking Kaiba's wrist in his hand to lead him out into the hall. The brunet let himself be led as he stared in silent awe at Kyoya who took such a harsh blow for him.
