The Two of Us

Her Secret

Chapter 1

This chapter, a flashback, part one of three, is all about the events that happened a week before the prologue's timeline.

After months of hard work and mental breakdowns for the college entrance test, Kyousuke, at the premises of the university, stood in front of the board, looking for his exam number. The magic number for him was 3123. As he scanned the list, he began to sweat hard. His heart began to palpitate because of the pressure. He could collapse anytime soon because his future was at stake. For him, failure was not an option. A shadow compared to Kirino, he promised to himself that he would not disappoint his father who had high expectations for him.

Biting his lips, he saw number 3113, Manami Tamura, who was tending her bedridden grandfather at the hospital, on the list. He rejoiced for his best friend for a job well done. He was undeniably happy for her but as soon as he saw the skip between 3122 and 3124 something broke inside him. At that moment, everything around him seemed to stop. He could not believe his eyes and thought that he was dreaming. He knew that he did his best but all the days of hard work that he exerted was gone to waste. Not only that, the effort given by Kirino, and his friends even made him more guilty. Swallowing anger and shame, he stood back with teary eyes and observed the majority of the students celebrate their acceptance. Devastated, he just left the campus and went home.

It was around eight when he returned home but he had no courage to face his parents and the mockery from her little sister. Ideally, telling the truth was the only honorable way to settle things because in the first place, it was his fault but with overwhelming thoughts and feelings in disarray, he decided to keep it a secret for now.

Luckily, during the course of the dinner, the topic was never brought out and he immediately returned to his bedroom without saying any word. Without even changing his clothes, he turned the lights off and went to bed. He tried to ponder on his next move, his future, but he could not think of anything. For he was tired and feeling empty in the inside, he closed his eyes and tried to call it a day but he could not sleep so instead, to forget the harsh reality for just one night, he played the eroge that Kirino recommended to him.

Despite of sleeping late, he woke up early in the morning and groggily went down stairs after washing his face. While still thinking how he could manage to tell that to his parents, he smelled something delicious coming from the kitchen. It turned out that Yoshino was preparing Kirino's favorite dish - it would serve as a good luck charm, a kick starter, for her first TV appearance later this evening. On the other hand, Daisuke the father who was outside of the house, vigorously washed the car. He was very ecstatic about Kirino's appearance for it would be televised nationwide. The whole country would discover his undeniably beautiful and talented daughter, he said. Being the proud parents of Kirino, they could not ask for anything more. She was the child from the heaven that they always dreamed for.

In his entire life, Kyousuke was never jealous of Kirino but seeing his parents this way made him severely insecure. He never saw his parents this happy when he graduated from middle school or the time he even won first place in the regional athletic meet.

He started to question himself.

Even though his father entrusted him to take care of her little sister, compared to Kirino's accomplishments and successes, he was just an insignificant being - that was the truth. He was given a chance to prove himself by taking the exam at Tokyo University, one of the prestigious schools in Japan, but he blew it. But even though that was the case, he wanted to tell and confront his failure as a responsible person. He was willing to make his resolve. Since Kirino was still sleeping upstairs and both of his parents were at the living room, mustering his courage, Kyousuke grabbed the perfect opportunity and told them the truth.

Around nine in the morning, the whole family took their breakfast in the same table. With Kirino at his usual side, Kyousuke quietly ate his food as he listened to their conversation.

"Kirino, you're aunt already gave you a gift in advance. Make sure you thank her later."

"Really!?"

"Yeah. By the way, Kirino, please reconsider. Your aunt is very willing to support you."

"It's all good for me but the problem is –"

"We can't leave Kirino by herself!" The overprotected father finally joined the conversation.

"No worries, honey. Her aunt will surely take care of her."

"What are you talking about? We are her parents. She is our responsibility not hers."

"You're naïve. This is not all about us. This is for her future.

"We can't! Western culture is very different from ours. Teenage kids nowadays have no respect and most of all, they do drugs, and violate themselves like there's no tomorrow. I don't want Kirino to be tainted. The hell, if we left her out there, she might get pregnant!"

Kyousuke blurted some food out of his mouth. He immediately drank the glass of water beside him.

"Are you crazy!? There's no way…" Blushing, Kirino, who almost choked, retaliated.

"Stop stereotyping!"

"Either way, I would not allow it!"

"Oh, come on, honey. Kirino is not a child anymore"

"How dare you to encourage your daughter to be pregnant in such young age! How do you even call yourself a mother?!"

"What I'm saying is she's already ma–" Despite of being irritated, Yoshino replied in a very calm voice but she was immediately interrupted.

"So, Yoshino, can you imagine your daughter having a big belly? No, that's not the question. Can you even imagine a man filling up your daughter's mouth with ****!?"

"Holy. Fucking. Shit." Kyousuke immediately banged his head against the table.

"WHA-!? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY!?" Kirino was totally blown away after hearing those words.

"Good lord! Have some manners will you?" Yoshino, just stood up in resignation.

After they took their breakfast, Kirino quickly returned to her room to dress up. Yoshino on the other hand was about to wash the dishes but Kyousuke immediately offered his help. Thankful, she also left to prepare for the show later with her daughter leaving the father and son behind thus creating a tense atmosphere between the two.

Despite of having a bad mood early in the morning, he did a good job hiding his emotions in front of Kirino by acting silly, he did not want to ruin her special day, he wanted to cheer her up but now Kyousuke could feel his fuming anger.

"Your only fucking job is to study!"

"Father, I-I'm sorry…"

"Compared to Kirino, you're just an utter failure!"

"…." Those painful words pierced through his heart and soul but it was the truth. "

"Anyway, be kind enough to give Kirino a gift for her graduation next week."

"…but I don't have cash."

"No excuses!"

"B-but…"

"Be responsible enough! Don't you even dare to disappoint me twice in the same day!"

After thirty minutes had passed, he decided to take a sit to rest his legs for a while. Since the dishwasher broke down yesterday, he had a tough time cleaning the dishes because of the grease. Now, he could not barely feel his hands.

"What a pain…" He sighed.

He slouched on the couch and tried to think of a simple gift that would make her sister happy but he could not think of any. He thought that he should call for Ruri or Saori for help.

"Or maybe…Ayase."

Suddenly, he remembered Ayase's confession last December. He could not believe that his lovely angel Ayase-tan had mutual feelings for him. She was his dream girl. He would be the happiest man alive if she became his girlfriend but the decision was made; he chose to reject her because of his sister's capriciousness. After that confession in front of the dormitory, they never talked to each other. In fact, it was been more than three months since they last saw each other. Since then, there was no communication between them.

Even though that was the case, he wanted to rebuild their relationship. Since Ayase would be also graduating this March, he had no choice but to spend his remaining allowance.

"Now you have mentioned Aragaki's daughter –"

"Are you a ninja or something!?" He blabbered too much to the point that he did not notice that his father was creeping behind him.

"So, are you in good terms with her?"

"Not really. There's some rift between us –"

"Oh, shit! Why did I say that?"

"Oh, I see. Can you tell me more about it?"

"Why do I need to tell you that!? Wait – do you know her?"

"Ah, her father is my colleague in the constabulary. I always see her at the office during holidays."

"I see."

"So that's why Ayase is fond of handcuffs and violent things."

"Stop being a coward and tell me what had happened between you two!"

"Eh? Are we not done with that!?"

"I heard rumors at the office. She filed a complaint against you. Details showed that you tried to rape her in the park. Is that true?"

"Of course not! That's totally a lie! Seriously, what's wrong with her!?"

"So?"

"So, what?"
"Just tell me what had happened."

"This will not stop unless I answer him" He took a deep breath.

"She confessed to me." Daisuke raised his right brow in approval.

"But, I-I turned her down."

"..."

"Don't leave me like that! Say something!"

"Hey, you two. Come here. Let's take a picture" Yoshino, holding a camera, interrupted them and called their attention.

"Where's Kirino?" Daisuke asked.

"She's still upstairs… Kyousuke, will you mind calling her out?"

"Hai –" Suddenly, the door creaked as she emerged slowly in a stunningly beautiful dress. With her curly golden hair and shining jewelries, she appeared in front of his eyes wearing a red wedding gown. Her presence was sparking with elegance. A godsend, she was the embodiment, the epitome, of perfection.

Instantly, Kyousuke's jaw dropped into the floor. He was absolutely stunned. He never saw her like this ever before. Surely enough, Mikagami would leave his own 2D world if he had a chance to see this.

"She's too cute to be true."

"My daughter is sooooooo cuteee~"

"hehehe~"

"The two of us, first!" Excitedly, Yoshino gave the camera to Kyousuke and pushed Daisuke out of the picture then the two of them then posed in front of the camera.

"Make me look beautiful or else I'll kill you~" Yoshino exclaimed.

"Make sure to adjust the ISO of the camera. It's a bit dark in here."

"Hai, Hai." Trying to pan it center, Kyousuke then looked into the scope of the camera. He could see Kirino's figure, her sensual curves, through her dress.

"Seriously, what am I thinking!?" He almost had a nosebleed.

After they took their family picture, the three of them, embarked the car. Last minute reminders, Yoshino told Kyousuke to eat his dinner ahead of them since they would be late. The taping would last almost six hours to say the least. She also told him to lock the door if he had a plan to go outside. Before the window rolled up, he waved at Kirino and bid her good luck for the show but she just replied typically with a cold stare.

With nothing to do late in the afternoon, Kyousuke got bored and decided to surf the internet. Thankfully, Kirino forgot to lock her room so he got inside easily without any struggles. He then opened her cabinet where her laptop was usually hidden but he could not find it. His effort was futile so he decided to use her personal computer in the end.

Things was going smoothly until he encountered a roadblock. The computer was asking for the bios password but he had no clue about it whatsoever. He tried different combinations but no success. The command keys, control, alternate, and delete were not working so he gave up and called Sena for help.

After following the instructions carefully via phone, miraculously, he was still alive and able to crack the password. The journey was not easy for him because he was forced to listen to her BL fantasies for two agonizing hours. He just could not make Sena to stop.

"My lovely Angel Ayase-tan…" Finally after gaining access, first thing first, Kyousuke opened a tab and searched for his favorite blog where he could find fresh contents and news about Ayase.

She looked beautiful as ever. She never changed. Again, he could not comprehend why he rejected this girl but there should be a reason behind it, he thought.

Recently, he found himself stuck in a corner reflecting, searching for the meaning of his existence. Truly, hardly failing the college exam was a hard blow for him. It made him emotional and brutal to himself so for the first time, he tried to be honest as he reassessed the problem, his feelings.

"I'm doing all of this for Kirino…"

To set the record straight, he never felt jealousy even once. Normally, siblings would start to hate each other but despite of the comparison, despite of being hurt in the process, he never despised her. In fact, he was very happy about her successes. If she was lonely or sad, he would cry for her and if someone hurt her, he would fight for her place.

"Am I doing this because I'm her brother?"

"Yes." Deep inside, deeply in his heart and soul, he knew that he was lying to himself. There was something more. For it was disgusting and corrupt, he was scared to admit it and blamed the eroges for influencing him.

He put his hand on his forehead and thought what motivated Kirino to play these kind of games. Oddly enough, majority of the games installed in her computer were all little sister based genre.

Now, he could see the pattern but still he wanted to confirm it. Suddenly, a light bulb popped out from his head. He reached out for the box located under her cabinet and it was quite heavy for it contains a collection of picture albums and a diary.

Invading someone's privacy was not his thing but his curiosity struck. He opened the album and he was stunned on what he saw. All of the countless pictures were him. The phrase, "I like you. I like you the way your little sister likes you.", that Kuroneko said to him months ago started to make sense but still he wanted to know more. He wanted to confirm if his theory was correct so he started to read the book beside it, her diary.

This time, tears started to flow down to his cheeks. He could not describe his feelings the moment he read it for the truth, Kirino's darkest secret, was right before his eyes.

"Step 1: Make Kyousuke believe that I'm an otaku [✓]"

"Step 15: Make Kyousuke appreciate little sister games [✓]"

"He's easy than I expected. May be we should go on a little dates every weekend. It will be sweet. Hmm, but how?"

"August, 23, 2008: I think this will do…"

"Step 33: "Attend Otaku Girls Unite meet-up with him [✓]"

This is going too smoothly. I think I should try this…"

"Step 90: Drop the KissxSis at the living room on purpose. I hope Dad will get mad at me for having such indecent game. [✓]"

"Step 90.5: Will Kyousuke defend me? [Passed]"

"Step 304: Make Ayase fall in love with Kyousuke [✓]"

The never ending list continued up until to this day.

This was all Kirino's plan all along and without realizing, he already fell for her. His image of Kirino as a little sister literally crumbled into pieces.

While deep in thought, his phone suddenly rang. He received a text from Manami congratulating him for his acceptance.

"Is she insulting me or what!?"

"You're so mean Manami! By the way, how's jii-chan doing?" He replied.

"He's doing well. I think he will be discharged next week."

"That's jii-chan for you, stronger as ever…"

"hehe, yeah.."

"Sorry for breaking my promise, Manami."

"Hmm? What promise?"

"Going the same college as you…"

"I don't understand…Why?"

"I failed the exam for fuck sake!"

"Huh? I saw your name."

"What? You gotta be kidding me"

"I'm so proud of you, Kyou-chan."

"You don't make any sense. I just went there. I did not saw my number!"

The very next day, he went to the campus to check for the results again. He went to the admission's office next to the main entrance as Manami suggested and saw his number shown at the screen. The reason why he did not see his number on the black board was because he was one of the excelling students who got the highest score. He was an asset, legible for scholarship that was why he got special treatment.

"YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Immediately after that, dancing along the streets like a retard, he went home and told his parents about the good news.

"That's my son!" His father was delighted. He thought that his son was a failure.

"I'm so proud of you!" Rejoicing, her mother hugged him.

"Hmp!"

"Thank you, Kirino!" He ran towards her and hugged her.

"I-I did not say anything! Hey, let go of me! You're disgusting!"

Hours quickly gone by after the celebration, late in the evening, his father approached him while watching the replay of yesterday's show where Kirino appeared. He put his arms around his son's shoulders and handed him a bank check worth 200,000 yen. "Here is for a job well done. Enjoy yourself. Go to the beach or something." He patted his head and then left.

Author's notes:

I need two more chapters to explain the developments and events in chapter one. Since this is only part one, the events in the prologue will still remain unexplained and disjointed. Sorry for the confusion.

For those who read this story last year, yes, this chapter is quite similar to the original prologue that was uploaded a year ago. In other words, this is the complete version of it; Kirino's secret was revealed here.

UPDATE: Thanks dbzsotrum9 for the constructive insight and for pointing that out. For those who are bothered with inconsistency of Daisuke's character. In my part, I want to make a very strong impression of Daisuke. I want to show you that he has a tendency or ability to crack or get really angry. Remember when Kirino introduced Mikagami as her boyfriend in season 2? When he got drunk? Yeah, that one. I used that as a reference but I think I went overboard in some areas.

So to end this, please comment your insight about the story. It doesn't matter if it's a hate speech regarding me as the author or the plot that I have in mind. Anything will be greatly appreciated! Thanks for giving this story a chance and also thanks for your time! Cheers!
