Chapter 1: A Visit to the Burrow
July, 1992
After the defeat of You-Know-Who, Xenophilius couldn't stand the house that his wife died in. In his grief, he demolished the old house and built a new, rook-shaped house. The outside was no longer vibrant, but the inside still had it's fair share of uniqueness, with still vibrant paint and a cheerful atmosphere, with just a hint of gloom.
Luna Lovegood wandered through the woods, detouring from her originally planned visit to the burrow. She wore a red jumper and lime-green overalls, along with a butterbeer cork necklace to protect her from the nargles, a mischievous creature that liked to steal people's belongings.
She entered the woods because she saw out of the corner of her eyes a herd of biddlewitts, a very rare species that didn't like people to directly see them, turning completely invisible when looked at. Of course, this made it very hard to find them, many people who see them in their peripheral vision tend to think it was just a trick of the light.
Now she was getting fairly deep in the woods, but she wasn't scared. She had a very good sense of direction, and she always knew where her daddy was. Stumbling upon a clearing, she noticed a patch of glowing orange flowers.
She had started a flower collection when she was eight and hadn't stopped since, and she had never seen this before, not even in her daddy's herbology books.
She sat down on her knees and carefully plucked one of the flowers from the patch, she opened her satchel that she got for her ninth birthday. It was primarily a bright fluorescent blue with multicoloured patches covering it, as if paint was splattered upon the surface.
Within this satchel were some of her most prized possessions, searching through it with her hands, she found her scrapbook. Flipping through it, she found an empty page and sealed the flower on it. Closing the book, she put it back in the satchel and stood back up.
"P-Picking flowers again, huh L-Lovegood?"
Luna looked behind her, across the clearing. There stood Samuel Soot, a muggle boy from the neighbouring village. One of the few that didn't immediately call her a loon. He had a chronic stutter that he just couldn't get rid of.
"Oh, yes, this is a species I've never seen before, it's very pretty."
"A-Alright then, I j-just thought I'd l-let you know th-that the other b-boys were planning on j-jumping you n-next time you w-went to t-t-town," stuttered Samuel.
"Thank you Samuel, but I don't plan on going to town anytime soon, I was just going to visit the Weasleys." Luna smiled dreamily.
"Wh-Who? What?" Samuel was confused. There were no families in the town called the Weasleys that he knew of. Maybe they were one of her creatures? He did always seem to hear of a new one every time he talked to her.
"Oh right, I forgot. Silly me, never mind what I just said. Anyways, I'll see you later, I'd better get going." Luna then turned around then walked away in the direction of the burrow.
Once again, Samuel was completely lost with this interaction with Luna
Lovegood.
Arriving at the burrow, Luna politely knocked on the door three times. No more, no less. Daddy said it was good luck.
Opening the door, Molly Weasley was surprisingly unsurprised to see Luna Lovegood standing there. She always got a weird feeling when she was around, her head felt all cloudy. Ignoring the feeling, she smiled down at the strange girl who somehow saved the wizarding world.
It was all an incredible surprise. Nobody could've expected that the defeater of the dark lord, who'd plagued England for decades, would not only be a baby, but a child of Xenophilius Lovegood no less!
The Quibbler article after that moment was one of the most sold wizarding magazine issues in decades. Nothing could beat the defeat of Grindelwald, though that was a little before her time. All the wizarding families living near the Lovegoods were sworn not to reveal the location of Luna Lovegood's family, namely the Diggorys and the Weasleys.
Luckily, the Fidelius was still in effect, but Xenophilius still wanted his daughter to interact with the other wizarding children, hence the Diggorys and Weasleys knowing their location.
"Hello, Mrs. Weasley. Your head is full of wrackspurts again. Is Ginevra home?" Luna asked.
"Yes, yes, she's up in her room. Please, make yourself at home, dear."
"Thank you Mrs. Weasley." Luna stated, wandering into the burrow. The burrow was a very cozy building. It had the appearance of several shacks of varying sizes and shapes stacked precariously atop one another. Luna found it very pleasant.
After only a few seconds within the Weasley abode, the sound of an explosion could be heard from somewhere upstairs. Luna looked upwards, smoke was leaking from one of the doors.
"FRED AND GEORGE WEASLEY! GET DOWN HERE THIS INSTANT!" Molly yelled.
"Coming mum!" They called in unison, as they quickly ran down the stairs.
"It's just that-"
"-Harry asked us to help him with-"
"-Some of his prank ideas for next year!" They finished.
"I don't care what Harry asked! He's a bad influence on you two! his father was a troublemaker too. He still is, for that matter. Either way, no experimenting in the house!"
The twins nodded, finally noticing Luna standing there. "Oh, well hello there-
"-Miss Girl-Who-Lived-"
"-How are you doing this fine morning?"
"I am doing very well, thank you. I found a new flower for my collection." She replied.
Heading downstairs from all the commotion, Ginny Weasley landed at the bottom of the stairwell. "Hi Luna! Our letters are coming tomorrow! Aren't you excited?!" She jumped, brimming with excitement to go to the prestigious school.
"Oh, Yes. It is very exciting. I hope to learn many new spells there."
By now Ginny had gotten used to Luna's strange behaviour, so she was unfazed by her "excitement." "C'mon Luna, let's head to my room, there's something I wanna show you!" She said, leading her to her room.
Ginny Weasley's room was the smallest bedroom in the house, but it had no feeling of claustrophobia due to the lack of much stuff. The Weasleys were a poor family, and couldn't afford much. Searching through her drawer, she finally seemed to find what she was looking for.
"Aha!" She said, retrieving a long, white object. It curved slightly and had a sharp point. A horn. "I found this while degnoming the garden. Dad didn't know what it was from but told me to keep it. I figured since you like animals I'd give it to you." Ginny handed the horn to Luna.
"Oh, thank you Ginevra. I've never gotten a gift from anyone other than daddy in person before. I have gotten many in the mail, though they don't seem to know my interests very well..."
"Well, obviously! You're the girl-who-lived! You saved the wizarding world! Of course you'd be sent gifts!" Ginny exclaimed.
"I don't see why they would give me gifts. How can you give something to someone you've never met? It doesn't make sense to me."
Ginny suppressed a giggle. If anything didn't make sense, it was Luna Lovegood. "So, why'd you come over anyways, Luna?"
"Oh, I just wanted to say hello. Daddy said it's good to do that sometimes. I suppose I better get going now. Goodbye."
"Er, goodbye then," stated Ginny, somewhat surprised by the spontaneous departure.
Luna travelled the pleasantly mellow path down from the burrow, trailing over a hill and forking between the muggle town and the Lovegood home. She fingered the horn that Ginny gave her. What an interesting creature it must've come from, surely. She decided to show it to daddy. He knew a lot about these kinds of things, He'd know what and where it came from. Luna smiled. Today was just as pleasant a day as any other.
She awoke the next day in a cheerful mood, in the highest room of the rook-like house she and her daddy lived in. After she got dressed, she headed downstairs and greeted her daddy in the kitchen.
He couldn't actually figure out where the horn came from, but he told her that it was her own mystery to solve.
As they ate their breakfast, the family owl, Apollo, flew through the window, dropping the latest issue of the quibbler (daddy liked to get the complete copy as any other person would) as well as a letter addressed to her. She picked up the letter, and as she expected, it was the acceptance letter.
She was going to Hogwarts.
