Chapter 2: Meeting

XxXxXxXxXxXxX Line Break XxXxXxXxXxXxX

"Welp, I've arrived early. A start, if anything," I leaned against the wooden door of the Snowed Inn, chest heaving from the long run.

"But it sure is cold… Wish I had something other than this exposing jacket…"

Life chose this moment to fuck me over as a freezing gale blew by. I turned a little blue, sitting down and hugging my knees to my breasts while shivering.

"Brr!..."

My teeth chattered. Not a good sign.

Hearing footsteps from far away, I looked up, eyes widening as I saw a rather short skeleton wearing a blue sweatshirt and pink flip flops standing right before me, with a way taller one coming towards us far behind.

I gulped. Another change.

"...Gee, you really do look cold. Freezing cold, down to the bone," Sans winked one eye shut at his joke, and I couldn't help but smile, "Here, take this. My brother told me to give it to ya," He took off his sweatshirt, only to reveal another one underneath as he handed it to me.

"Omigod, thank you," I think I exaggerated it a bit, but meh. Grabbing the blue sweatshirt, I stood up to put it on, letting out a contented sigh of relief as I felt myself warming up, even if just a little. And holy shit I towered over Sans.

Sans chuckled, "Hey, it's no problem, kiddo. By the way, you're a human too right?" I nodded, my thankful grin dimming.

"Wow, two in one day? What're the odds?" Sans finished saying just as Papyrus came up behind him, panting.

"Ah, hello, human!" The taller of the skelebros recovered immediately, "You looked cold earlier, but fear not!" Papyrus took up a heroic stance, and I saw Sans grinning fondly out the corner of my eye, "I, The Great Papyrus, shall drive away the cold!"

I giggled into my fist, "You're pretty cute…".

And just like that, the moment was ruined. For me anyways.

I froze up, realizing what had just come out of my mouth.

'W… Why the FUCK did I say that? It is so weird for a guy to-! ...But wait… I'm not a guy anymore…' A small part of me probably just died on the inside, 'I'm a girl now… Damn the troubles of gender bend…'

"C-Cute…? A-Ah, I guess I am- I mean, but of course! My cuteness requires little to no effort for anyone to notice!" Papyrus nodded rapidly in agreement, a small blush present on his features, "And besides, it would only be natural for a… um… s-someone like you to notice! Nyeh heh heh!"

"I don't know bro," Sans speaks again.

"I think they try a ton,"

"Sans don't you dare-!"

"A skele-ton,"

"Arg! SANS! Why do you insist upon plaguing my life with your horrible puns!?" Papyrus questioned, stomping one foot down repeatedly.

'Whoo… Okay, the lines are back to the original ones from DoubleTale, albeit with minor changes. Looks like there are still some similarities here and there,' I smiled softly at the interaction between the brothers.

"Though I must say," Papyrus looked back at me, "You seem much nicer than the other human. They seemed to be in quite the bad mood…"

"Uh… yeah," Sans glanced to the side, grin shrinking, "...I'll tell ya later, Pap,"

"Sans, NO," I frowned, glaring slightly, "You gotta tell him now! He's your brother!"

"Woah, woah! Chill out, kid," Sans held up two hands, as if trying to placate me, "Uh… what's the problem here?"

I looked to Papyrus, and was at a loss of words, "...U-Um… Great, how do I put this… Papyrus, the other human… They… They aren't good people…" I finished lamely, trailing off. I'd simply rephrased what Cter'd said to him.

"Human-"

"The name's Amane, but call me Ama," I blurted out before I could stop myself. I smiled sheepishly at the interruption, "Um, sorry, I figured I'd tell you my name first…" Papyrus smiled pleasantly, and Sans- Wait. Why was he suddenly putting on that scary pupiless look…?

Papyrus coughed into his fist, "Anyways, as I was saying… Ama!" He grew as serious as someone like him could, which sadly wasn't all that intimidating, "I don't believe you're right,"

"E-Eh?" I shrunk slightly in fear, the look Sans was giving me going unnoticed by Papyrus.

"Why, I don't think there are bad people." Papyrus beamed. "I think everyone can be a good person if they just try. There's no such thing as evil, there's just misunderstandings! Nyeh heh heh!" Papyrus laughed, arms akimbo, and Sans finally looked away with a small sigh, pupils back in place. I stopped myself from heaving a sigh of relief, sweat pouring down my brow. What'd I do to cause Sans to look at me like that…?

"And I will show the human that I believe in them! I'm sure they're just scared, what with everyone trying to kill them! I'll show them friendship, and I'm sure they'll lay down their weapon and embrace me!" Papyrus took up that heroic stance of his once more, and I returned my attention back to him, shaking my head with a small smile. I was trying to keep to the DoubleTale plotline, it would be far too troublesome if everything upped and changed. Though with my luck, that plan would probably fall apart sooner or later.

"But still… Papyrus, promise me you won't go alone when they do come, okay…?" I gave him the best pleading look I could manage, puppy dog eyes and all. Both Papyrus and Sans flinched involuntarily, flushing.

"A-Alright, I will! Don't worry hu- Ama! The Great Papyrus always keeps his promises! Nyeh heh heh heh!"

"That'll be great…" I sighed, shoulders falling, "...I gotta go now, I have a little business to attend to. I guess I'll be catching you guys later?"

They both nodded, and I turned, about to head to the Snowdin shop.

"...Hold up, kiddo," Sans teleported in front of me, and I blinked, surprised, "I've got a lotta questions for ya I need you to answer honestly," He sidestepped, looking to Papyrus, "Hey Pap! I'll see ya back home, okay?"

"Of course, Sans! Bye bye for now, Ama!" I heard footsteps crunching through the snow as Papyrus jogged away.

"...Let's get to Grillby's," Sans grabbed me by the arm before I could reply, and I winced at how tight his grip was.

The world blurred around me, and then we were in Grillby's.

Sans plonked me down on an empty stool right by the counter. I managed to get a glimpse of the bar's inside. Empty, as expected.

"Now, kid," I snapped my head back to Sans, trying my best to keep a calm composure. His pupils had disappeared again.

"You better have a whole lotta answers, or you're gonna be havin' a bad time. Capiche?"

I swallowed nervously.

*You feel your non-existent sins crawling up your spine.

"...So, you really aren't with the other guy, huh?..." Sans drummed his skeletal fingers on the table.

I nodded, glad the interrogation was over.

Sans sighed, slumping, "...Sorry I hadta put you through that, kiddo… normally, I'd have just more or less tried to trust ya after you spoke to Papyrus and worried for him like that, but… with all that's happening lately? Welp…" He shrugged, giving me a tired grin, "...You could never be too careful. Heh, I've been acting outta character way too lately…"

I held back another wince at that statement. With Sans, you never knew. He just might be hinting that he knew where I'd come from with his last sentence, and that wouldn't be remotely good at all. The fact that he skipped right to asking how I'd gotten here without questioning the specifics of where I'd come from earlier during the interrogation just raised the suspicion level.

"So, I got two last questions for ya. What took place in The Ruins?"

"...Ah. Well," I scratched the side of my head, grimacing, "It wasn't pretty. There was dust everywhere I stepped, and after I went through the house and down the basement… I saw some goat woman fading while she said her last words to… whatever that child is," Sans' pupils had disappeared yet again, "I came out after a shattering sound and confronted the other kid, and, welp," I shrugged, tapping my right breast, where my heart and Soul was located, "They stabbed me right here. And then I backstabbed them before I died and LOADed," I grinned at that memory, "They didn't die, but their HP went down to 0.000000000000000000001/40. Their expression was priceless," I giggled.

Sans chuckled at that part, seizing a bottle of ketchup from behind the counter and drinking it, "Then I LOADed back, and decided to gather all the monster dust so I could give them a proper burial. Encountered a talking flower that introduced himself as Flowey, got past him, then finally stepped into Snowdin and did my job. I buried the monsters right outside the door... Ah, I also separated the goat woman into an individual bag,"

"...Yeah, that figures," Sans glanced down at his flip flops, then back up at me, "Kid, thanks for doing what you did - burying the monsters, I mean. I'm sure they appreciated it. Gives me another reason to place my trust in ya, and course," He winked one eye shut, "thanks too for almost killing that kid. They don't normally have any near-death experiences until Waterfall,"

I chuckled, waving a hand dismissively, "No problem. Just doing my job… I just wish I could've arrived earlier and done something for those monsters…" I clenched my fist, sighing. I gave Sans a weak smile, "...But hey, you can only take what you can get, amiright?"

His eternal grin drooping, Sans shrugged indifferently. A moment of silence passed between us.

"..."

I spoke up again, "...Hey Sans. If you don't mind… could you help me round up the dust in Snowdin later…? Once the evacuation is complete,"

"...Sure. I'll do that," He glanced to the side, "Hey kiddo, I'll ask ya my last question later. The other kid's gettin' close, and I gotta go deliver my usual message,"

I smirked, " 'You're gonna have a bad time?' "

Sans' grin got wider, "Yep, you got that right. Now, shoo!"

And he was gone, leaving me alone in the deserted bar.

I stood up, ready to leave. Time to raid that bunny's closed shop.

I opened up the cash register, taking out all 999G and stuffing it into my Inventory. More than given in the game.

Looking to the wall where an extra pair of Tough Gloves and Manly Bandanas were, I swiped them, tying both Bandanas around my left leg - the first five centimeters below my short pants and the second five centimeters below the first - before donning the Tough Gloves on each hand, hidden inside the longass sleeves of my jacket.

I checked myself while stealing every healing item there was.

I blinked. When did my Passive SPD go up by 5? Nevermind, I better go before Chara comes by.

50 Bisicles

...Damn if that wasn't a shitty amount of food the bunny lady's got stored here. I walked out of the store casually, humming a Christmas tune.

"Oh!" I perked up, seeing Chara in the distance. I waved cheerily at them, before vanishing in an inhuman burst of speed to Sans & Papyrus' house, not bothering to see their reaction.

I slammed the door open, "Sans! They're here, we gotta- ...Oh no…" My eyes widened as I read the note pasted on the wall that Sans was reading as well, eye sockets pupiless.

Sans, Amane, I must apologize for breaking my promise. It pains me to have to do so. But I cannot stand by idly as the other human goes on, hurting. Everyone who tried to fight the human failed, but if violence isn't the answer... Perhaps kindness is?

That would be a truly great puzzle, maybe even one worthy of the Great Papyrus! Nyeh heh heh!

I'll see you soon, with a new friend!

Nyeh heh heh,

Papyrus

"...Fuck," I bolted out of the house, speeding in the direction of Snowdin's end. Just because I'd seen this coming doesn't mean I was any less anxious.

Sans sighed heavily, putting on the hood of his sweatshirt as he stepped out of his house.

"C'mon kid, don't make this harder than it already is..."

A pleasant breeze flowed by, leaving a trail of dust behind as Sans teleported away.

"I've seen enough proof to know that you weren't the one behind this RESET that wasn't supposed to happen… Heh heh heh…"

"...Why is it always me?... I'm tired... So tired.."

I skidded to a stop, a trail of footsteps behind me. Sans appeared next to me, a magical eyebrow raised.

"Wow, kiddo, you got here faster than I'd expected-"

I slapped a hand over his teeth, holding up a finger to my lips. Sans looked over to where I was staring at, his pupils vanishing once more.

We watched in dead silence as Papyrus spouted his same old dialogue - lines which I'd heard dozens, if not hundreds of times before - in Genocide to the 'Human', squatting down and opening his arms for the hug that would never come.

Chara grinned disturbingly, pulling back their fist with the Tough Glove on it.

Sans turned away, closing his eyes with a pained look. I continued staring in silence, expression blank.

They uppercutted without a single hint of hesitation - unlike in DoubleTale - and the Glove made contact with the underside of Papyrus' skull.

And that's where I came in.

"Nope,"

SLASH!

Sans' eye sockets widened at the sound, Papyrus' doing the same but accompanied by a small gasp at the brutal sight happening before him.

Chara howled in agony, leaping a couple dozen feet back as they clutched the bloody stump which was once their arm. I gripped the arm they'd lost, flicking their blood off of Lævateinn with a swipe. Papyrus stood rooted to the snow to my back, quite possibly frozen from pure shock.

They were now dis-armed.

'...Aaaaannnd my plan of keeping to the DoubleTale plotline has con-pletely fucked over,'

Tossing Chara's arm underfoot, I stomped on it with bone-breaking force, crushing it utterly before anyone could react.

They could only watch in horror as I grinded my boot on the gory remains of their arm.

"Papyrus, I know you have a shitty amount of things to say right now, but," I glanced back at a thankfully still headful Papyrus, keeping a single eye on Chara as Sans teleported behind his brother, "We really can't afford the time right now, so all I can do is promise you this…"

"Y-You…!" Chara ground out, snatching a Monster Candy from their Inventory and tearing open the wrapper.

I ignored them.

"No matter what happens, I won't kill them. I'll simply hold them off until the evacuation is completed, and I swear by my own grave that I won't die while doing that. They've already proven that kindness isn't the option Papyrus, so please…"

I turned to face Chara again, staring them down as they glared at me hatefully, arm gradually regenerating along with their shirt's lost sleeve, somehow. Behind me, I could hear Papyrus stuttering as he struggled to form words, going silent when Sans whispered something I couldn't make out into his ear.

"A-Alright, Ama… but tell me you'll give them another chance…?" Papyrus' voice was croaky with… guilt?

I took the risk, turning around to give him the same beaming smile he'd given when he spoke about there being no evil in this world.

"Don't worry Papy… I will,"

Papyrus sighed in relief, seemingly not noticing the new nickname I'd given him. Sans placed a comforting hand on his brother's shaky arm.

"Sans, I take it the promise I just made is good enough for ya not to interfere?" I looked back to Chara, nearly flinching when I saw their 'creepy face' on as the regeneration reached to their hand.

=)

'Shit,'

"Heh, I dunno kid. I'm gonna be takin' quite the big gamble here, and I hate doing that. But… I'll make ya an exception, just this once," Sans winked one eye shut.

"Good, good! Then it's time to get the fuck outta here, am I right or amiright pal?" I snarked, gripping Lævateinn tight with both hands after I'd removed the Tough Glove from Chara's severed appendage and tossed it into my Inventory to prevent them from recovering it ever again.

I heard the sound of Sans teleporting away the very same second Chara's arm finished regenerating.

"...Finally, just you and me, huh?..." I smirked, blood-red irises glinting.

*Your blood boils in anxiety.

=) .

My only response.

"Welp…" I took a deep breath, eyelids snapping open, flaring with unkindled D.E.T.E.R.M.I.N.A.T.I.O.N.

"Let's dance, motherfucker!"
