Chapter 002
Eight years later…
"Hey Remus, get over here!"
Remus smiled weakly. Sirius was drunk, and he was not. This was a fairly regular occurrence these days, but it always bothered him how much his friend drank. It seemed to have started about three years ago, when Remus had gotten his first girlfriend, but it had only escalated from there; it was now a near daily occurrence.
"Sirius, maybe you should slow down… You've had quite a bit."
Sirius swung his bottle wildly through the air. "No, no, Remus, friend, you should slow down."
"That doesn't make sense."
"Neither does the heart, mon amie."
Remus sighed. There was no point in arguing anymore. Sirius seemed to only be a lovestruck fool when drunk, and his ramblings about emotion never made much sense. Remus could only guess his friend was lonely; he knew he was quite the same. "Though for a different reason," he thought.
Seeing there was no reasoning with the raven haired man, he decided to throw caution to the wind and have a third beer. "If you can't beat 'em…"
"Ah, now you're joining the fun. Come on, James was just telling that story again."
"Which one was that?"
"Fucked if I can remember."
The blonde man smiled softly. He had come to terms with his feelings over the years and had decided it was best to pretend as though nothing was the matter. It was the best course of action, so his reasoning went, to save his friendship with Sirius and not stir up any drama between them or their other friends. That being said, it still stung like nettles to know that the dashing young man would never be his.
The two sat down beside James and Peter; the noise of the party made it hard to hear, but once Remus recognised the story being told, he tuned out. He had heard it plenty of times, and he decided to let his mind and his eyes wander. Staring at Sirius now, he could instantly pinpoint everything he liked about him. His soft black hair, his piercing grey eyes, and his well defined body were a few things. He let his mind wander some more.
"Maybe if he's drunk, he'll confess some kind of attraction to me. No, that's just the alcohol talking; I've decided long ago that he'd have said something by now. He's too straight forward to have not."
He tuned back in and noticed that Sirius' eyes were beginning to glaze over. He nudged him, jerking him back awake.
"Hah? Oh, is the party over?"
Remus snorted. "It is for you. Come on, I'll take you home."
Sirius shakily rose to his feet and stumbled. "Well lads, I hate to leave a great party early, but I do enjoy my walks with the wolf."
Remus blushed, thanking whatever deity watched over him that the lighting was too dim for anyone to notice. He grabbed his coat and produced a wand from its' pocket. "Come on pup, we've got places to be."
Sirius grinned, adding, "And things to do."
Remus warily glanced back at Sirius. He hadn't'd been this drunk in quite a while, and it was concerning. He regretted drinking a third beer.
If Sirius wasn't oblivious to his friends' worry, he made no show of it. He continued with his drunken slurring as they made their way down the street. "Aren't Muggles just fascinating? To think that leaving an apple, or a grape, or whatever, out on a windowsill or what have you, would produce such a magical substance."
"Sirius."
"Yes my love?"
Remus blushed harder. He hated it when Sirius did this; it was almost as if he knew about his feelings and was mocking him. "Do me a favour and shut up, yeah?"
Sirius let out a hearty, drunken laugh. "Well, well! Someone's in a sour mood. Not still upset about Lily, are you?"
Lily and Remus had briefly dated back at Hogwarts before she fell for James. It was a bit of a sore subject for Remus.
"This is what I'm talking about Sirius. Why do you feel the need to cause drama needlessly like this? You know how I felt about her, why would you insult me?"
Sirius snorted, growing somewhat serious. He muttered, barely audible, "Because it hurts me just as much as it hurts you."
Remus blanked. He had never heard this before! He was convinced he knew everything about his friend.
As if reading his mind, Sirius went on, "Even I have secrets, my friend."
"You… You liked Lily…?"
Sirius laughed. "Good Lord, no. Never. I can swear that much on my own life, if you'd like."
Remus furrowed his brow. Nothing the drunk man said seemed to make any sense; if he didn't like Lily… Who could possibly be making him this upset? He cautiously asked, "Does it… Remind you of Sarah…?"
Sirius sighed. "Remus, I'm sorry, but you'll never understand. How could you? I've been a fool all these years."
"What on EARTH are you talking about Sirius? For God's sake man, this has been going on for years. We're not leaving this spot until you tell me what's wrong."
The black haired man frowned. "Can't do that, mon amie."
"Why not?"
"Because it'd be much more fun to show you instead."
With that, Sirius grabbed Remus' shoulders and thrust his head in for a kiss before the blonde man could process what was happening. He shuddered as he felt his friends' soft, warm lips against his, and he let his eyes half shut in pure ecstasy. He had finally done it. He had finally shown his heart to Remus Lupin.
